December is an exciting month for Essence, not only do they have a new cover girl but it’s one of our favorite ladies of the year, Gabby Douglas.

The 16-year-old Olympic gold medalist is featured as one of the magazine’s “Women of the Year” and she looks gorgeous in black and gold on the cover. As Essence.com tells us:

ESSENCE is proud to honor extraordinary Black women each month, and in this issue it features its “2012 Women of the Year” — including Gabrielle Douglas, First Lady Michelle Obama, Robin Roberts and more!

In the cover story “Gabby Takes Flight,” see what life has been like for “America’s Sweetheart” after making Olympic history — and why she continues to steal our hearts today. Plus, ESSENCE remembers the shared triumphs (Serena’s top wins at Wimbledon, the Olympics and the U.S. Open), personal storms (Sybrina Fulton’s fight for justice for slain son Trayvon Martin) and bittersweet good-byes (to Whitney, Donna, Ms. Melodie and more) that made us cheer, grieve and strengthen our resolve.

For Gabby, it’s clear she’s still enjoying her newfound fame, as she told Essence:

“In my dreams I didn’t think about how many shows I would be on and how many people would tweet me…it’s so cool!”

I almost fell out of my chair when I saw this! I am still shocked!!!!!!!!!!! So, somebody finally came to grips to put somebody else on the cover besides the same people. We will see how long that is going to last. I give Essence credit for doing this. This should have been done the minute she landed back in the US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Umm…that’s nice, glad to see her hair done.

Please can’t we just leave the hair issue alone? Gabby is a gymnist, she cannot do the floor exercise, balance beam, and the other moves with a fancy hair style. I wish this hair issue would not be brought up.

Someone new on the cover of Essence? Maybe that Mayan prophecy is real! JK. Glad to see Gabrielle getting some much deserved attention from black media.

OK, I love me some Gabby but what about Sanya Richards-Ross I would love to hear how she balances married life and training life. Or what about the other runner that wears a flower in her hair? How she battled being sexually abused when she was younger and still made it to the Olympics. I don’t know, I think she’s a little young for Essence.

maybe essence finally listened to the cries from their audience about same old same old cover stars and changed.please ignore kickash. she is a miserable black woman looking for attention. why shoud we stop talking about someone positive when hoes in the media are talked for beyond their 15 minutes of fame? shame on you

  • kickash

i thought we were done talking about her. she’s not the only black person who won gold at the olympics, you know

Glad to see someone other than the usual suspects (Jill Scott, Beyonce, Janet Jackson, Alicia Keys, Nia Long, Queen Latifah, etc) on the cover. Congrats to Gabby. She deserves all the praise she’s receiving, and I hope the spotlight on her inspires other young girls.
