Friends: How Many of Us Have Them?

October 7th, 2010 - By Anthony Jerrod

One of my favorite parts of the hilarious movie ‘Next Friday’ occurs when Day-Day (the very funny Mike Epps) and Roach (the late Justin Pierce) find themselves in a tough situation among a group of Hispanic “thugs”– the Jokers.  Immediately, Day-Day begins singing Whodini’s classic song, “Friends,” to appease the situation.  To his dismay, the “thugs” become agitated and one of the Jokers hilariously stated, “Shut up, I don’t even like Whodini.”

Whether you like the classic hip-hop song by Whodini or not, we all need to identify and move past the toxic people in our lives and embrace our true friends.  For many individuals, though, it is relatively difficult to distinguish who their real friends are.  Although this is not an all-inclusive list, here are five ways to assess those in your everyday microcosm to determine if they really are your true friend:

    I agree with ARCELIA

It is HARD for me to find a good "friend" with the qualities listed above! It always has been and it seems to be getting harder the older I get.

I feel like everybody I meet already has best friends and isn't looking for new ones. Not only that, but it's hard for me to be genuinely interested in a friendship b/c im so used to rollin by myself.

Sometimes I question whether I even want a friend because I'm a drama-free type person. I HATE drama!

    *sigh* rant over

My best friend died December 15, 2008 and she had all of those qualities. She was always there, not afraid to tell me the truth when asked, I could call any hour day or night and she would answer or call back as soon as she saw my number. 22 years of friend and it was all taken away from me and I miss her so much. I miss our talks, sharing of everything going on in our lives, her telling me I shouldn't do this or that, me telling her to be good…all taken away. I know I will never have another best friend or friend who will even give 50% of what my best friend did. If you have these qualities in a friend…hold on to them because they can be taken away in an instant.

I do not honestly believe that it is possible to find ALL of these qualities in one person. I have several "Friends" (I guess they can be called that because they have all fallen short at some point) that each have one or more of those qualities and one time or another. They key is not to cut them off when they fall short of our expectations as a friend, you don't ALWAYS need to speak up when things aren't going your way (sometimes being a friend requires eating crow and overlooking things or comments), and understand relationships are seasonal. Some seasons may not bloom as fervently as they did the season before but may prevail again next season.

I "SWEPT" ALL MY SO CALLED "FRIENDS" OUT MY LIFE AND MOVED ON….IT'S BEEN WELL OVER MAYBE 15 YEARS SINCE I HAD A "FRIEND"….I'VE BEEN ROLLING BY MY SELF…BUT, SOMETIMES I WISH I HAD A "FRIEND" SO, NOW I'M SHOPPING AROUND AND GETTING TO KNOW OTHER WOMEN WHO COULD BE MY FUTURE FRIEND…I KNOW WHAT I WANT IN A FRIEND BEFORE I HAD ALL KINDS OF "RIFF-RAFF" AS FRIENDS…I GOT SO SICK OF ALL THE "FLIM-FLAM" THAT CAME WITH THEM……MY "SEARCH" FOR A TRUE FRIEND GOES ON.

I loved that part in Next Friday. My favorite movie. Yeah, I need to get rid of some fake friends in my life.

Outstanding!!! Finally, a good article for this week. I have very few friends and I guess that when I look at the 5 points, I understand why.
