1. You Are Wealthier Than He Is
It’s no surprise that women nowadays command a higher salary than their male counterparts and dating a man who makes less money than you do isn’t a big deal…for some women, that is. After all, you’re not marrying him for his money – at least I hope not. But you also want to make sure that he’s not marrying you for YOURS either. If you have considerable assets that he could ask for in the event of a divorce, you may want to protect yourself. There are plenty of women who have had to pay alimony to their ex-husbands who have done nothing to help their wives grow their careers or gain their wealth. You don’t want to offend your fiancé by suggesting that he’s only in it for the money, but you don’t want to be naïve either. If you have no problem paying alimony, a prenuptial agreement can be used in many states to limit the amount of alimony that is payable. Come up with an agreement that you think is respectful and fair and let him know that although you love him dearly, you want to do what’s best to protect you both in the “unlikely” event of a divorce.
