Are You Tweeting During Sunday Church Service?

An Arizona church is encouraging congregants to use social media. Not just in their personal time, but during service.

“We feel like if they can take action in the moment, it’s much more impactful for them and for the person they are interacting with,” Lead Pastor Ted Baird told Fox 2 Now in St. Louis.

Church members relish the chance to take advantage of the rule, one that isn’t shared among many churches across the country. “I love it and think everybody should do it. It’s the way we connect these days,” said Barbi Nix, a church member.

Of course, they’re being pushed to spread the Word in their social media interactions, but still, some might have a problem with a person tweeting and Facebooking during the sermon.

    This is fairly common at my church. A lot of people are reading the Word from their tablets and smartphones instead of carrying a physical Bible with them. It’s not distracting to me personally.

    It isn’t necessarily a bad thing…at the church where I went to in LA, people would sometimes tweet profound things the pastor would say, and he’d later retweet them. Who knows who you can touch by that tweet? It also possibly helped him know what the people took away from his sermon the most. But this was a big church, so even though some people would tweet some notable quotes, it seemed like everyone was still paying close attention. If its a small church, I think it would definitely come off as rude.

    I don’t go to church anymore,but I remember how my mother used to flick me if it looked like I was distracted,but now they encourage folks to tweet? I guess…
