From One Father To Another: President Obama Shares Parenting Advice With Jay-Z

October 20th, 2012 - By Veronica Wells

Some of us are still struggling to understand the friendship that exists between President Obama and the Carter family. Whatever the nature of their relationship, we can certainly understand how both parties benefit from having each other in their respective corners. The president gets the backing (and financial contributions, $4 million just last month to be exact) of some of the biggest stars in the music industry and Bey and Jay get to expand their empire by kicking it with the president all the time.

At a radio station in Cleveland, Ohio, the president continued to speak about the budding friendship with Jay-Z and Beyoncé by sharing the fatherly advice he gave to the rapper/mogul when Blue Ivy was born.

“I’ve gotten to know these guys over the first several years.  They’re good people. Beyonce could not be sweeter to Michelle and the girls. So they’re good friends. We talk about the same things I talk about with all my friends.”

“I made sure that Jay-Z was helping Beyonce out [with the baby], and not leaving it all with Beyonce and the mother-in-law.”

This friendship still feels a bit too opportunistic to appear genuine; but if it happens to help the president get another term, then I’m not mad. Plus that advice is not too bad either.

I love and support obama and I sometimes like hip hop but imo I don’t think hip hop and politics should mix. It seems so…politically incorrect.

  • Meyaka

Like I previously stated, I’m not an Obama supporter; his friendship with the drug dealer and the stripper rubs me the wrong way. People were talking about respecting Obama a few days ago, how often have you seen a president hanging out with pop stars and or reality tv stars? Get real…

    • FAMUGrad

      Meyaka
You sound immature & ignorant. What gives you the authority to refer to this man as a drug dealer & her as a stripper? What someone has done in thei arer past doesn’t define who they presently! If people were to judge you based on your squeaky clean past, would you like your reputation?
None of us is perfect; however, stop judging someone because their sin doesn’t look like your sin!!!
Because President Obama has relationships with celebrities means he’s incapable of being an effective Leader? Absurd!!!

      • Meyaka

I mean jay-z dealt drug to his own community has he not?
Beyonce dances on stage half naked with her legs wide open does that not constitute of stripping? Correct me if I’m wrong. I am not judging them, just speaking the truth.

Obama hanging out with celebrities does not speak on his capability as a president, but i can certainly see how some people will lose respect for him due to that fact,he is a president not a star. I apologize if i have offended you, or brought up some hurtful memories about your own past,i didn’t mean it in a mean way, more like an observation.

          I appreciate your comments. :D

          • Meyaka

Thank you autum, I really don’t mean any harm at all, I know I can be harsh sometimes, but 4 brothers and a tough daddy will do that to you lol.

    • TRUTH IS

How about some advice about creating some job and decrease the unemployment rate amongst black folks?

      • Meyaka

        I heard that.

@Meyaka:disqus Like I previously stated,if you dislike Obama then why comment on a post that pertains to him?Instead of worrying about who Obama is socializing with or hanging around, worry about why your parents named you “Meyaka”. What type of name is “Meyaka”? You need to change that ugly, ghetto name. Your parents couldn’t have named you something else beside “Meyaka”? Get real….

      • Meyaka

Shonda,Meyaka means “Path” in baoule language, a tribe from the ivory coast,Africa. They said “Obama” was ghetto and ugly too, don’t let your emotion dictate your reason, your name is shonda, where is that from? where are you from? girl you’re going to try and check me about my name? Hihihihi

      • autumnbreeze

Ok…so you are just showing how immature you are. Disagreeing with someone is one thing, but when you take it to the point of being personal, you just sunk to a whole new low. May God Bless you and keep you o/

        • guest

You are ridiculous. Last I checked, it was this Shonda person who was being immature. That’s what’s wrong with black folks…too busy worrying about stupidity such as oh you don’t like Obama. So what?! Who says all black people have to like him. Seriously, what has he don teh last 4 years to merit any of our votes? Aren’t blacks the most un-employed? But you’re worried about Meyaka’s name? Get a grip! This was all geared towards Shonda of course, but autumnbreeze was silly for calling out Meyaka for being “immature” when it was Shonda who was.

          • autumnbreeze

Actually my comment was NOT directed towards Meyaka…it was directed towards the other one….

          • Na Na

Yea I think she’s referring to the Shonda chick.

    • Kenedy

I am an Obama supporter….but i agree with you, he needs to stop flirting with Jay Z & start brainstorming as to how the government will push job creation

      • Meyaka

ROTFL@ “flirting” looool, you’re crazy. I just think he is on a different level than them, it’s not a good look …

    • yannibug

I’m sure if you want to live in Jay-Z’s past he’ll be more than happy to let you, but these days he’s an artist and a business man. Beyonce is an entertainer, not a stripper. Part of the president’s appeal is that he doesn’t feel he’s above anyone, and he’s able to relate to tons of people. And if his friendships are the only thing that’s keeping you from liking him, I’m scared of how your vote will affect our country. That lofty attitude is keeping you from seeing things clearly, and that’s a damn shame.

      • Meyaka

Lol at that first sentence, you folks on here are so emotional. I mean I respect your opinion, but strippers are entertainers too :) , and Jay-z is a drug dealer it is what it is. Since its easier for you to think that someone will not vote for a president based on something as ridiculous as his entourage,I will let that go unchallenged. A president ,especially one of Obama’s caliber shouldn’t be around pop stars as often as he is,its not about being above anybody,it’s about recognizing your role in this country,he has the power to make decisions that will affect this country, those two sings hood anthems,it’s really not that complicated. To each it’s own,I guess.

        • Anonymous

@Meyaka:disqus Seriously,if you don’t like what Obama stand for, then why are you the most who posted on here? You need to get a life, you know a lot about someone you claim you have a disdain for. It’s not that serious,if you don’t like Obama then don’t watch him, listen to him,or comment on a anything about him. Obama is the president and if you don’t like it,then don’t vote for him. Nobody cares if you’re not an Obama supporter, that’s your personal business. I don’t care and neither do the folks that’s on here.

          • Meyaka

            You care :)

          • Meyaka

This is so embarrassing,if this is the kind if people defending Obama,I feel for him.
“Why are you posting if you don’t like him, your name is ghetto, you think you cute” you all are some imbeciles.

        • sheena

Strippers are definitely entertainers too! I never saw how a parent could praise Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez and whoever but if they walked in the room to find their daughters dressed in the same “costumes” gyrating their little vag%nas all around they would be mortified…Its not a good look because unlike the 18% of the American population that AA and urban entertainers make0up you have another 80% of the population wondering WTF the President of theses Sinking united States is doing…..Meanwhile Pres. Obama will be the first to say that he is not just AA’s President so he doesn’t make special laws or specially address AA issues because he is every races PResident…..but those hip-hop dollars are looking kind of good though. I’m just saying, this point of view has a valid point.

          • Meyaka

Thank you,you said it all right there.
