Pass Or Play: Alicia Keys Salutes All The Hardworking Women In “Girl On Fire”

October 20th, 2012 - By Brande Victorian

As women, we’re used to wearing many hats and Alicia Keys is saluting all of them in the new video for her female empowerment anthem, “Girl on Fire.”

From taking care of the kids as mothers, to being caretakers of the elderly, to looking after the home, cooking and cleaning, to paying the bills and looking after our man at the end of the day, Alicia salutes our tenacity and ability to do it all — and looks pretty phenomenal while doing it. It’s also nice to see a video with an actual story line and cool visual treatments that you don’t see everyday.

Check out the new video and tell us what you think; pass or play?

I hit ‘pause’ after the first minute. It sounds just like 10 other songs she’s written. Next.

This song makes the bottom of my heel itch. I don’t like it. And listening to it on the radio, I would have never thought it was about working women. I do not like tracks that rely heavily on the video to get the message across that means poor lyricism, which…pretty much describes this song. Pass.

i used to be a BIIIIG AK fan, but after all the personal business out in the open, i dont really care for her anymore. i don’t have an issue with what she did, just don’t be hypocritical… i still love the song “unthinkable” though, lol…(even though now it seems a little sneaky, lol)

I sooooo want to say Play. After all the nonsense men and women talk in songs. I know she wants to represent hard working women..who where that S on their chest everyday. Keys is very talented. I do agree with the comment that the songs seems to have only one line. When I looked up the lyrics. She’s really not saying anything. After the songs she has had. Doesn’t seem like she put any effort. All her songs have meaning, heartfelt and the lyrics are strong and real. So for that I ‘ll pass on this because this is one of her weakest songs when we are talking lyrics from Keys

  • mac

that Bvlgari product placement was awkward.

It’s alright. guess it’s one of those songs you have to listen to for a couple of times to like it.That being said, the beat sounds so familiar to her song “try sleeping with a broken heart”, even the colors- the deep purple, etc is kinda the same. so it’s not very fresh! but i like Alicia and as a single mama i can relate to the song a little, so i’ll give it a play!

As far as I heard, this song has one line…she needs to go back to the drawing board(or the piano)!

  • angel

She did a video and song similar to this already. I think it was “Super Woman”. I think I’ll pass. Alicia Keys is a great artist and usually makes nice song, but I’m just not feeling this particular song.

  • Jazzie

She should be saluting all the husband snatchers! Women who work are to steal peoples men.

    • gracie

      Work are = hard

    • Meyaka

There is something about calling a woman a “husband’s snatcher” , it is such a weak thing to say. Where were you when your husband was being snatched? Did he try to escape from her? Did you call the police? So many questions…

      • Merriegirl

Whether the wife was there or not is no one’s business but the two people in the marriage an God.

        • Meyaka

Men will always win,and we will always lose. Swiss made a decision to cheat on his wife, then leave her and Alicia is at fault? This is so crazy to me,and I don’t say it because its Alicia,it goes with everyone. Unless the woman is your friend or family, save all that hatred for the cheater. Crazy.

PLAYYYY!!!! Love the song and the video! AK was never known for being extra/hoochie in her videos which I definitely appreciate. And she didn’t have Nicki Minaj in this version which made everything that much better! (No shade though lol)
