I’m no fan of Aubrey Graham, the man known to the world as the rapper Drake, but I must say I am impressed with his latest accomplishment. The YMCMB front man just became a high school graduate.

I’m sure someone somewhere is rolling their eyes thinking what’s the big deal, after all the man is 25. But let’s be real, how many people in the music industry, particularly on his level, are thinking about obtaining a high school diploma when they have already amassed enormous wealth and status? Lawd knows ya’ll shade the mess out of Beyonce for her lack of education so I say congratulations are definitely in order for Mr. Drizzy.

Last night, the rapper/actor/low-key wanna-be R&B singer tweeted the good news, saying:

If you’re wondering why this is just now happening, Drake dropped out of school when he got a role on the Canadian TV show “Degrassi: The Next Generation” at 15. He was on the show until 2009, and we all know what happened after that when Weezy F got a hold of him.

It sounds like Drake didn’t take an easy way out to graduate either, shouting out one of his teachers who he credits for his accomplishment:

“Thank you to my teacher Kim Janzen for spending the last 5 months working tirelessly with me!! OVO SOUND”

Go head, Aubrey! C/O 2012

congratulations to Drake..it takes a lot of courage to go back and finish school!

  • mel

awww but will he be able to attend a graduation ceremony :( that’s the best part

  • Ambitious12

    congrats drizzy!

  • Charla

Drake didn’t drop out for degrassi. He joined the show when he was around 13 and didn’t drop out until he was 17. I used to love that show and started watching it in middle school. And me and drake are the same age.

Wow all the shade towards Drizzy at least he went back maybe one day he will further his education and go to college I’m glad he did it and he kept his promise to his mom he dropped out of school to support his family his mom health was getting bad and they were struggling financially so he needed to the money he was bringing in from The TV show and he was only a semester / credit shy of being done when he dropped out in the first place

Congrats Drake! Very few in the industry (actors, pop singers, rappers, R&B singers) have a high school diploma. Only reason i always give Nicki props is b/c she finished high school & she always tells her fans to finish school 1st & worry about the boys/girls & music later. A lot of stage parents let their kids drop out b/c they now have a job, they are bringing in income.

  • xxdiscoxxheaven

He didn’t exactly dropout becauseof the show. He was a lazy student with a bad attitude and then he decided to drop out.

  • clo

I’m just mad he was allowed to drop out of school for a tv show. What happened to home schooling or tutoring? No tv show is worth more than a child’s education.

why does it matter? People go to college to get jobs. He already had a job, there was no need for him to receive a formal education. When he grew up, he felt that he should go back.

  • Kourtney

Congrats to him for graduating. His Mother is/was a teacher so I am surprised she allowed her son to drop out. Fame or not.

*Eye roll* I should have dropped out; perhaps, I’d be a millionaire, too.

  • Alexa

Before reading the article I was totally going to the throw shade considering the fact that most people his age should’ve already completed HS but you made a good point about celebs in the music industry not wanting to obtain their diploma after becoming successful. So in that case, Congrats Drizzy!

  • IllyPhilly

Dang, do you have to drop-out to be famous? I honestly thought it was like mandatory to do homeschooling if you’re a child star. I guess that’s all on the parents.

    • Charla

He joined degrassi at 12 or 13. I used to watch that show. On MTV’s show “When I was 17″ Drake said he dropped out of Jewish Day school at 17 because he wasn’t interested in school anymore. So he didn’t drop out for the show. This article is wrong.

  • sabrina

Maybe this will inspire Wayne’s ignant behind so he can stop saying mess like “Weezy F. Baby and the F is for Phenomenal.” Boy, get ya life!!

    • IllyPhilly

CTFU!! Are you serious that’s what the F is suppose to stand for!? Dead!!! I say the same thing about Fab, why was it so hard to spell your “name” the right way??? Dumbness passing as cool and original. Thanks for that one!

      • MLS2698

I guess p-baby would sound like a pissy baby.

    • Trisha_B

I think Wayne does have a high school diploma, or at least a GED b/c he was at one point taking college courses for art or something like that

      • Marie

That’s a shame. The school system failed at some point.

        • Trisha_B

Wayne is actually smart. A lot of the rapper’s are smarter than they put out. Like Plies, he’s really smart & talks well. But when he raps, he changes that all up.

          • glad-b

I agree, he is actually very smart.

      • IllyPhilly

So why not rap about being both book smart and street smart? There’s a lot of celebs and regular people who “went” to college or so they say. Roxanne Shante got busted for lying about her college education.

    • Rose412

Yeah he does sound super ignorant but weezy went to college and majored in psychology … even if he didnt finish, gotta give him some credit

      • Miss K

We don’t have to give him credit, actually. It’s a shame that I’m surprised any time a rapper speaks eloquently in an interview.

    • shorty2784

Lil Wayne got his GED and then went to college U of Houston majored in psychology he has to yet to finish but hopefully hell go back to finish

    • http://twitter.com/MsRedboneBrite Tee Elyse

LMAOOOOOOOOOOOO I’m mad because I heard him say that mess too!!!!

  • pfeiffer87

This is co cool. Considering how many rappers dropped out of high school and prioritise and disseminate ideals of gettin rich & havin a hot girlfriend, it’s refreshing to see a man whose part of that whole scene prioritise education. Drake just went up in my estimation.

is he dumb or something fame and money don’t replace an education Claire Newman graduated college at his age now nearly 23 years ago with a BFA communications degree

    • Nikki

      Why the insult?

    • Kenedy

Am i missing something? Who’s Claire??

  • http://twitter.com/MsRedboneBrite Tee Elyse

That’s a good look!! Always happy to see folks accomplish things!!
