There is a large population of American citizens who call New York City their home, yet are living behind enemy lines. Despite being, in many cases contributing members of society, students and simply normal everyday people, these mostly black and brown men are stopped, searched, harassed, berated and in some cases beaten everyday by the NYPD, the most notorious police department in the United States.

It seems as if America is moving closer and closer toward becoming a police state. Some form of democracy, but a form only for a certain population of individuals, who live in certain parts of town. In the wake of the Occupy movement, which sprouted up in cities throughout the country as well as abroad, incidents involving police brutality have seen a tremendous increase. From the now infamous video of a group of college students, peacefully protesting on campus, being pepper sprayed to multiple videos showing unwarranted police beatings, the outrage most American’s once had about this level of anarchy has just about disappeared.

I like how the author of this article singles out NYC. If the truth is to be told, this is happening all across the nation. We should just up and leave our homes because some writer thinks that we aren’t vocal enough about policies. New Yorkers have always and will always be vocal about things we disagree with. There is an effort underway to stop these practices and in time they will cease. As for why this policy came to be in the first place, because it’s our black and brown people committing the majority of the crimes, hanging out on the street corner til the wee hours in the morning, selling drugs, smoking weed, playing loud music, craps, dice and whatever else that keeps them out there. Perhaps people aren’t complaining as vocally as you feel we should because we’re sick of it ourselves. Maybe our time will be better spent holding our children to a higher standard so that they have better things to do with their time besides keep the sidewalks company at night. I’ve lived in Harlem most of my life, born in Brooklyn and I can’t say how many times I had to call the police for noise complaints at 2:00am just to get some sleep so I can go to work the next day. The police may go to far at times, but our people put themselves on their radar. I love this city and will only leave it if I decide I want to leave, not because some writer has deemed New York unsuitable to live in because of racism. Exactly where have you been where you seem to think it’s only NYC that experiences racist policies by the police department. REALLY!!!!!!!!!

I fully agree with you. To add to your comment, it is quite ironic, because NYC is supposed to be die hard pro Obama.

Statistics that blacks &browns are committing the majority of the crimes? Stop & frisk PRESUMES blacks and browns are guilty until proven otherwise. I get so tired of people who may or MAY NOT be black in the 1st damn place coming on sites geared to black people citing non-existent or made up stats WITHOUT any proof. Black people do not use more drugs than whites statistically, yet we are imprisoned disproportionately for non-violent drug offenses. Now that’s a stat that can be easily verified but bet donuts to dollars, someone else will quote the lie that black people use drugs at higher rates than others. And if you are black and repeating this crap, the internet has something called search engines..use that shatt!!

joined —blackwhitePlanet.С0M—–it’s where to- connect with
beautiful and excellent people! particularly the black and browns, so proud and gung-ho to rep that city?

  • facts

Maybe it’s because America IS slowly becoming a police state.

  • Marco

…then why are the natives, particularly the black and browns, so proud and gung-ho to rep that city??

    • Candacey Doris

Because despite the police, it’s the place we love. No matter how brutal the police and crappy the high prices, NYC is amazing. I’ve been away 8 years and i still miss it.

      • KamJos

Really? I’ve been away 6 years now and I don’t miss it at all. I miss my family in the Bronx, but I have a much better quality of life now that I’ve moved to a different state.

        • Candacey Doris

That’s a matter of opinion i guess. And while i suppose my quality of life has gone up, there are things i miss. The people, the food (good lord the food), the fashion, the diversity, the fast pace, all so dearly missed. I don’t miss the dirt, the police, the expense, or the way some people can be so rude. There are pros and cons.

          • KamJos

I do miss some foods, I’ll admit. Nothing like New York neighborhood pizza. I seriously don’t even eat pizza at all until I go back to NYC. And the Chinese foods isn’t quite the same here. But those are small prices to pay. Yeah I don’t miss the police, expense or rudeness either.

    I will be there soon.
