Surviving slavery, segregation and discrimination has forged a special pride in African-Americans. Now some are saying this hard-earned pride has become prejudice in the form of blind loyalty to President Barack Obama.

Are black people supporting Obama mainly because he’s black? If race is just one factor in blacks’ support of Obama, does that make them racist? Can blacks’ support for Obama be compared with white voters who may favor his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, because he’s white?

Yes, the two political parties of today are starkly different from the past, I get it. Let’s focus on how the parties are in recent history. Yes, part of those spending cuts that affect people of color include welfare, public housing, food stamps, unemployment, pell grants, medicaid, medicare, SS, etc. I think people like you have a misconception of these programs. I will concede that there are people who misuse welfare. But you must acknowledge that there are people who actually need these programs in order to survive. A common misconception is that people on welfare are happily unemployed while they collect checks, but that’s inaccurate. I personally know people who work crappy jobs 40 hours a week but still need some form of welfare to get by. And don’t think it’s just poor people who get subsidies from the government. child tax credit, home mortgage interest deduction, charity, state tax deduction, all provide subsidy to middle class citizens. Final point, we are a collectivist country, despite what the Tea Party says. There’s a reason the founding fathers threw out the Articles of Confederation. What are we to do with the poor when they are hungry? Let them starve because the market says so? No way, this isn’t Pakistan, we look out for ours, and because we make investments in our poorest citizens they can go on to become high tax paying citizens.

Let’s see. Al Gore, john Kerry, and Bill Clinton got almost 90% of the black vote. Blacks have been voting whites in office for the past 43 presidencies.

But we only vote cuz of race, right?
When republican candidates stop appealing to southern white racists, then maybe things might change. I think the number of whites and the number of blacks who vote based on race balances out. Big f-ING deal.

Personally I like what Michelle Obama’s mother, Marian Robinson said, “I admire how hard Barack works. And I know that he does it because he wants to make sure that this country is still a place where you can make it if you try. He wants to make sure that a college education is affordable and attainable so that all parents can encourage their kids to reach for it, just like Fraser and I did. He wants to make sure that moms and dads can provide for their families, and folks my age can retire with dignity and security. And he wants every child to believe that they can achieve their dreams, no matter where they come from, what they look like or how much money their parents make. That’s what makes him work so hard. I’ve seen it from him and I’ve heard it from him. And that’s why I’ll be voting for him in November, and I hope you do, too.”

It’s certainly a plus!! The question should be: who are the people NOT voting for him because of race? His debate night confirmed that blacks always have to be better than whites at everything we do, because our competence will always be brought into question. We don’t get the luxury of being human and having a bad day. He might have been distracted by all the sheet in Libya. Yet, by the following weekend, pundits were making it sound like the man could barely read and write. As long as ‘black’ is one of the races involved, there will always be an issue of race. So, when it comes to supporting our own, if not us, then who? Jim Crow would still be the law for much of the land if we’d waited for whites to take the initiative and change the status quo. And while I’m on it, yes; Affirmative Action is still relevant and necessary.

  • pfft

What about blacks who don’t view him as being black but still voted for him? What would they say our reasoning for voting for him would be?

  • Meyaka

re black people supporting Obama mainly because he’s black?

-Yes many are voting for Obama because he is black, play basketball and hangs out with Jay-z 0_o

If race is just one factor in blacks’ support of Obama, does that make them racist?

-It makes them as racist as white people voting for Romney because he is white.

Can blacks’ support for Obama be compared with white voters who may favor his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, because he’s white?

    -Absolutely, it’s the same thing.

  • B

Yes. There are plenty of black people voting for Obama simply braise he is black just like there are people voting for Romney simply because he is white. HOWEVER both Romney and Obama have supporters from the ethnicity in which they are not because these individuals believe in their purpose. It kills me that people are upset Stacey dash is voting for Romney, as if the fact that she is “black” should automatically shape who she votes for.

    • Africanpride

The problem wasn’t about Stacey voting for Romney, the problem is her reason didn’t make any sense implying that Black people are not enlightened enough and that’s why they vote the way they vote. It’s quite hysterical when people vote for a candidate who clearly has nothing to show yet, Romney is far from being a good candidate. He has no plans on how he will be a better president. Romney, has shown that he doesn’t care about middle class, doesn’t care about minorities, and his religion is also a very interesting one. This guy doesn’t even talk about where he stands morally, so why do people call him conservative? So, why in the world will a black person or an average American support someone who doesn’t even care. He’s rich, white and many vote only for him based on that. People might say whatever they want to say but Mr president has done important things that was crucial in the last administration. He’s doing his best to fight against terrorism, and be there for minorities. The only problem is the economy, but Republicans are giving him a harder time by voting down majority of his bills. Why is the media, or non white folks making it seem like Blacks sticking together is a bad thing. They do it all the time, they vote and support each other bad and good. So, yes we blacks should stick together more. So tired of this topic.

      • t

        Preach that’s right

    • guest

      I agree 100%

  • get real

Why don’t you ever hear questions like. “are you voting against Obama because he’s black” “are old white men voting for Romney because hes’ white” “did white women vote for Sarah Palin because she’s a “soccer mom” “did old white men vote for Mccain because he’s old and white” etc. But of course they will say no “it’s his policies”. But when we say we vote for him because of policy, they look at us sideways and say yeah right.

    • guest

no other president has garnered 95% of the black vote. NONE, so yes his race has alot to do with black peoples loyalty and support for him, to state otherwise is ignoring the facts.

      • t

If that was true we would have vote that black adulterer Herman Cain or whatever his name is no one cares about race but whites

  • get real

I ask critics (which are probably whites and sell out blacks) him being black is the reason that your not voting for him? I know “its his policies”. Yeah right. Let’s look at 04. By then Bush had purposely lied us into war so he go after that middle eastern oil and had the economy in shambles. We tried to get Kerry in office but you idiots voted reelected Bush. Funny how that wasn’t enough to vote Bush out of office huh? And thank you Rastaman. I’m just making up for all the white guys I’ve voted for as well.

  • Rastaman

Yeah but i am just making up for all the white guys I voted for before!
That is just some dumb ish. I damn sure never voted for Alan Keyes nor would I vote for Herman Cain or Allen West or Condi Rice if she ever ran for office. People who talk about voting for Obama because he is black act like if black people only vote for other black people even if they espouse policies that are not in their best interest. Just because poor and middle class white folks throughout the the US continuously vote for white candidates who do not support their economic interest does not mean black folks should be just as dumb.

For nearly a 100 years from 1865 to 1960, most African Americans voted the republican line that stopped with Kennedy when Republicans made it clear through their actions that they were not for us having equal rights. The Democratic Party was and we supported them. We black folks are not out there talking about take our country back, because we already know there is nothing good for us in past America, so we have no other option but to move forward, right now its Obama but tomorrow it could be another white person, a Hispanic or an Asian.

Why don’t they ask why more white people do not vote for Obama even though he offers so many of them the best opportunity with his policies?
Is it because we already know the answer…in 2008 Obama lost the white vote to John McCain even though his party had just ran the country to the brink of an economic armageddeon.

  • NONEYA

i hate this stupid a$$ question. First of we would vote for the Democrat ticket in high numbers regardless of race or sex!
And, why isnt anyone asking if Whites are they voting for Romney cause he is white! Or, if some whites arent voting for Obama because he is black. You see this is not a one sided question & really unfair!

    • B

You answered the question in your response.

    • guest

people dont ask that question because whites dont vote monolithically like blacks ( they are a lot of whites democrats and a lot of white republicans, you can’t same the same for blacks as there are very few blacks who are republicans compared to the number that are democrats), infact no other race, gender, or religious group votes as monolithically as blacks. No party can get 95% of the vote from any other population in any aspect like you can from blacks, so naturally its going to raise some questions.

  • TRUTH IS

Of course they will vote for the black puppet, not different from a white puppet tho!

    • BOBBY

So are you part of the 47% or just a dumb M F ‘er?!!?

      • TRUTH IS

As you can see….I don’t not by what politrickians sell….I do not support demecrips or rebloodicans…u mental midget mawfacker!!! DOLT!!

        • FromUR2UB

Oh. So, you’re the one who bought Jesse Ventura’s book? How many sales does that make now, one?

          • TRUTH IS

The truth is stranger than fiction!

  • ElvisWasAHero2Most

First Black president, yes, but even if black Barack Obama were white Barry Oswald he’d still receive an overwhelming majority of the Black vote. Blacks (along with women, homosexuals, latinos, urbanities) have historically voted democratic, so I’m not shocked at all by the support for Obama. Plus, compared to the spending cuts proposed by Romney/Ryan, they greatly effect people of color, so yeah, no surprise.

    • Kennedy

African Americans Historically did not vote the Democrat. They voted Republican, see the 13-15th Amendments passage….which were passed by Republicans.

      • ElvisWasAHero2Most

Yes, my mistake, I wasn’t considering times prior to the invention of the light bulb. Since LBJ passed the civil rights act and in effect prevented the south from going democratic, Blacks have continually voted democratic.

      • t

Actually republican and democrat was combined and the opposing was independent

    • http://www.facebook.com/nikia.dshiznit Nikia D-Shiznit

Romney has done everything to alienate anything that’s not privileged, rich and white. Republicans period. That’s why.
