Why Do We Do It? Wearing An Outfit You Know Is Dead Wrong

I know I can’t be the only one who’s become quite fond of the “R&B Divas.” I know this because not only did the show’s premiere garner the highest ratings for a new show on TV One; but also because, just yesterday, my friend texted me in a slight panic:

Gurl what happened on the last episode of rnb divas? I’m feenin

It will have you caught up.

In one of the earlier episodes we watched as the other divas, particularly Nicci Gilbert Daniels, formerly of Brownstone,  planned and put together a baby shower for fellow singer/friend Keke Wyatt. From the moment she walked into the venue all eyes darted to the terrible, horrible, no good very bad dress she was wearing. For those of you who watched the show, you probably remember it very well. For the rest of you, allow me to refresh your memory.

Everything about it was off. The color, the fit, the style…everything. And I’m not trying to be petty, the only reason I feel comfortable keepin’ it all the way real regarding this outfit is because Nicci herself admitted that she made a bad decision when she decided to step out of the house wearing this monstrosity. In a blog for TV One this is what she wrote:

… I first have to acknowledge that purple dress I wore to KeKe’s baby shower on the premiere. It was not CURVATO [Nicci's new clothing line.] It was Lane Bryant. It was WRONG and I knew it! I wore it because I was so proud that I could fit in it and I just couldn’t resist (Ladies: You know what I am talking about – being able to fit into something that hasn’t seen the light of day in a long time). My husband even told me it was awful. HINT: Ladies, if your husband tells you not to wear something, LISTEN. My mother even talked about that dress. I read the tweets and even re-tweeted some of them. I have learned to be humble and laugh at myself. I’m cool. I get it. That dress was just WRONG.

Yaasss Nicci Yass. Watching the episode, I was so perplexed; but now after this explanation, I completely understand. Sometimes when you make up your mind to wear something, nothing short of apocalyptic winds could rip it off of you.

I can relate because just a couple of weeks ago, I found myself in a similar predicament. I had just ordered this fly dress from Urban Outfitters. It was originally $50 something dollars but it was on sale for like $13.00. I don’t know about you but when I get something on sale, it makes me love it even more. So needless to say when it arrived at the crib, I was looking for any opportunity to wear it. Truth be told it was more of a club dress than anything else; but like I said I was dead set, hellbent on wearing it. So when I was invited on a date to grab smoothies and take a walk in the park, guess what I wore? You guessed it. My club dress. And so you can get a picture of just how much of a club dress it was, here’s a pic.

Now, there’s no way you can tell me that the dress isn’t fly. But was it appropriate for a first date in the park? Absolutely not. In all honesty, just like Nicci, I knew when I had to shimmy into it that it wasn’t the right move to make. But my determination beat out my common sense and I went for a walk in the park looking like I was going to somebody’s club. I rationalized: “It might not be the best choice but Ima work it.” Well, work it I did. Walking to meet my date, I got more cat calls than usual. While men were thanking God for my body, as if it were their personal play thing, I was praying to Him that nobody got buck and decided to touch it.

Mistake.

I knew I was wrong. After the date I sent the above picture of myself, along with a side shot, to my sister and mom at home. They both agreed: cute dress, completely inappropriate for a first date. (I didn’t even bother to send it to my father.) I was meeting up with my girlfriend later in the day and had decided to change, too ready to take the body hugging dress off. My friend knew I had just come from a date so she asked whether the jean shorts and t-shirt I was wearing were the same threads I wore on my date. I told her no and decided to show her the outfit I had mistakenly chosen to wear.

Her response was wordless. She just bust out laughing.

In case there was any doubt in my mind that I hadn’t committed a fashion faux pas, that guffaw was the confirmation nail in the coffin.

I know Nicci and I aren’t the only ones who’ve been caught slipping, when have you ever worn something that you knew was dead wrong?

Oh snap I saw that picture for couple days now and thought that woman was wearing a Madea costume. Had no clue it was real. Tragic!

  • FromUR2UB

Maybe she can make a tunic out of it. Nanh. The print’s not working either.

  • Jacara

Interesting. I had no idea Lane Bryant had a “Pentecostal” collection. Apparently, NO ONE knew except Nicci lol

    • Cherry

lmao at Pentecostal collection!!! Too good!!

Got that Madea dress on *dead*

    • anon

      she could be Madea’s double.

Nicci’s dress was a holy ghost running up and down the church isle dress all she needed was a big hat with purple cockatoo feathers!! The doors of the church are open!

I’ve noticed that when I did that, I was more in love with the potential of the outfit, than what the outfit actually was. For ex, that moment when you have your tummy tucked in just right, and every layer of the dress falls Juuuust right when you have it at this. particular. angle.

Voila! It looks great! Unfortunately, you will be standing and bending and moving, and the outfit will never actually look like it does from that 1 perfect angle. Regarding the club dress, you remind me of the scene from “think like a man” where megan Goode’s character “dresses down” to not show off all the goods. Is it me, or did that STILL look too much?? lawwwd

She blamed that dress on Lane Bryant? I’ve never seen anything THAT ugly there. But let me tell you, i once wore the most inappropriate clothes out to applebees with a friend. We were all dressed to go to a party and it got canceled. We were a bit mad-we wanted to go SOMEWHERE. So we went to applebees. On college night. Yeah.

  • aduvalprincess

Just curious, how did the date go Veronica?

      • MLS2698

        What kind of shoes?

  • BBBEE25TEE

Yeeeeeeeeeessssssss! I was like why Nicci has on an old lady dress..I agree the fit and the style was off….it made her back look broad, her shoulders look wide, and noasatall. I agree with @MLS2698 Madea’s closet, lol but it really do.

  • IllyPhilly

    Sherman, sherman, sherman!

  • KJ23

GREAT ARTICLE and that was a cute dress! Hey, you never know, the people in the park could have spontaneously burst into some type of club dance mob, then everyone else would have been looking foolish!!

    • Veronica

      Lol! Aww thanks!

    • Mel

I actually agree. She’s a very small girl, so the dress still doesn’t look as raunchy as it could if someone more volumptious was squeezed into it. (i.e. Me).

  • MLS2698

Haaaaaaa! That purple dress looks like it came from Madea’s closet. And yes, club dress with killer heels for you.

She look like she just left the cotton field.. WTF

    • Beautiful Mic

“You told Harpo to beat me”…oh, actually, that’s the corn field. lol

  • HoneyDipp

Ehh… Not my style, but I honestly don’t think it’s all THAT bad.
