True Life: My Birth Control Gave Me Crazy Side Effects

September 20th, 2012 - By madamenoire

As modern day women, we have the luxury of having a bit more say when it comes to reproduction. Technology and modern science is something else; but sometimes the stuff manufactured in a lab doesn’t mesh so well with the natural chemistry of our bodies. We took to our Facebook page to ask our lovely Noirettes what type of side effects they’ve experienced from their birth control.

Vanya: Yep, ended up with DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis), which is potentially deadly if the clot breaks off and travels to your lungs….

Janice: MASSIVE weight gain like 25-36 lbs in a 6 mt span had to stop

Talia: When I first started I had morning sickness for a whole month…woke me up at 4 am on the dot.

KM: My hair thinned out horribly. I thought I had alopecia until the dr. told me what was going on.

Farisha: I was taking the pill and my whole spine was sore….from my lower back to the top of my head.

Milan: Maybe I was too young but due to heavy menstrual periods the doctor put me on the depo shot when I was about 12 or 13. I had constant migraines, my head felt like a kaleidascope all day and night. I had such horrible memory loss that I couldn’t even remember my teachers names

Tania: I was on Yaz and it affected my libido. I had absolutely no interest in anything sexual at all.

Candice: Everytime I started a new pack I threw up for half the day. I would have to miss a whole day of classes once a month. Yea, I’m off the pills now.

RaShaun:  I developed a blot clot that started in my leg and traveled up to my lungs (Pulmonary embolism). I didn’t know it was happening until I went to the hospital for the pain I was feeling in my side and back. At first the pain felt like gas, but when it got worse, I could barely move or breath. I had to take blood thinners everyday for 6 months and get my blood checked every week. Now I have to take baby aspirin everyday to lower the risk of getting another blood clot. I also can never take any type of birth control (except condoms of course) ever again.

Jazzmynn: I first took the pill (don’t know which one) it made me a narcoleptic I would literally fall asleep in parties, outside, anywhere my head could rest. I then switched to the ring. I had the doctors surgically remove it because it had irritated my skin and the infected area grew around the ring. Then I took the patch and that was the lesser of the evils but the after affects of bc has left me with a hormone imbalance called PCOS and I get ingrown hair (the worst some dermatologist have ever seen) cramps, heavier cycles, less likely to carry a child to term etc.. Now I’m just abstaining I hate doping my body up.

Denise: Mine use to make me psychotic. Doctor thought it was funny until I told her I would slam her head into the door and not feel bad about it. She changed my pills real quick.

Charley: I got pregnant.. Where was the control?!?

Because of stories like this, I have never been on birth control lol I just stick to condoms. After a bad experience with the male condoms, I switched to female condoms. I would like to try the shot just to put on a little bit of weight though!

i recently got off the pill because of mood swings and lack of libido. I had NO interest in sex. eventually my period slowed down so much it STOPPED coming AND i felt like a lot of numbing in my left leg that my doctors sworn I was just me being paranoid. at that point i had had enough! I was on the pill for 5 years, and i feel so much more like myself while i’m off of it. yes it was nice, its cleared up my skin and minimized cramps but i’d rather pop a midol for a few days than be worried about serious health issues. my body is fine the way god made me.

  • Pretty1908

I experience nausea from time to time, but Lutera has helped me…i lost five lbs …and im getting smaller…yes libido goes in and out but im not married so sex should be the last thing on my mind anyhow

Weight gain from the pill (not sure of it’s name, but it was one of the old ones), vaginal & back pain as my coil began falling out, psychotic episodes & loss of libido with Depo-Provera. In the end once I had my children I had my tubes tied. Best decision I ever made.

  • Ashley

I gained 15 pounds in one month. Something which before BC, took me 7 years to do! My emotions where all over the place one minute happy, the next sad. Those hormones are way, WAAAAYYYYYY too much for me. No thanks!

  • NoMoreHormones

I was on Depo. I gained weight (which I liked that since I was a skinny girl), hair shed from the roots, would have unpredictable spotting to almost full menstrual periods just about everyday, became anemic, felt depressed– like past being sad or in a funk, damn near suicidal depressed, also had weakened PC muscles and bladder control problem at the young age of 19!, (which have improved drastically after doing kegels). Oh one more thing, when I got married and wanted to have another baby I couldn’t get pregnant for 8 years!!! NEVER AGAIN

  • Cara

The Pill – Extreme weight gain. Got back to my original weight 3 months after getting off of it.
The Patch – Heavy periods. HEAVY. And painful.
NuvaRing – Weight loss and depression a week before my period.
    Condoms – Allergic to latex.
Maybe this is a sign I should remain abstinent, lol.

    • FAMURattler85

Dang. You’re all effed up. I’m sorry girl. Maybe you can try non latex condoms if you do decide to get down with the get down. If those don’t work, idk what to tell ya. *yeezy shrug*

    • bigdawgman

      iud?

    • Pivyque

Stay abstinent! Lol If you do decide to have sex in the future, they make natural skin condoms and polyurethane condoms. Natural skin condoms don’t protect against stds though.

  • tritri0079

I took them years ago and gain 40 pounds in less than 3 months and had lost of appetite. I rather use a condom or just not have sex ( not having sex part will not fly with my husband lol)

  • Kenedy

The girl who got a blood clot that traveled to her lungs….thats so scary to me, that or getting a stroke….yikes…i used to be on the pill but stopped because i became paranoid that i would get a stroke or something

  • Excepcion

The Nuva Ring gave me very psychotic mood swings. I never had experienced anything so crazy in my life. To top it off I had been on BC since highschool (5yrs) with minimal side effects ..I ended up on anti depressants, not knowing that the ring was the underlying issue. I seriously considered wanting to pursue legal action towards the company that’s how bad it got.

I was on NuvaRing. I told my doctor about all of my medical history including the fact that I was taking anti depressants. The depression was well managed and I was very happy and stable. At first I loved how convenient it was — no pills to remember and nothing getting in the way. But slowly I began to feel more and more depressed. I was taking my anti depressants every day but they stopped working. I was suicidal, cried all the time and couldn’t get out of bed. My boyfriend saw an email about birth control and how the NuvaRing in some cases nullified the effects of anti depressants and increased depression and urged me to take it out. Within 24 hours I was back to normal, but by then it was already too late. I lost my job due to being too depressed to go to work. My doctor was reluctant to see me about it and just shrugged when I told her what had happened, said these things happen sometimes. I promptly got a new doctor and I will never take hormonal birth control again.

What was the name and location of that Dr. She/He should be reported.

I just took a new one on the market two yrs ago names Elinest because the literature said it would help with my ovulation mucus but I always knew better from everybody else side affects to the depo shot I didn’t want to know mine so I wasn’t stead fast on being a guinea pig after using the patch that felt like someone was taking their hand, grabbing my stomach and turning it into a knot it also left burns on my skin. The Dr. who was so persistent on what I think to be controlling the minority population insisted that I try something at least 3months and I was two wks shy of the deadline just to end up in the hospital with a blood clot in my lung the size of half dollar! Mind you not my children are 6yrs apart but she could care less! All I know is I wish I would have followed my first mind because it was a loooonng yr of wkly blood draws from them having to check my coumadin levels and I’m still not in the clear!smdh It folks knew like I do they would just say no to Birth Control it is the enemy!

I was also a hormonal mess, mood swings like crazy. I realized I was gaining weight, but I didn’t think it was that much until I got on the scale, which showed I put on 20 lbs in 4 months even with regular exercise. YUCK. I got off them pills quick and have lost about half of that weight so far.

  • Hello_Kitty81

I had the depo birth control shot after 6 weeks after I gave birth to my daughter and I was on it for almost a year and it made me gained 50 pounds and I didn’t eat much. When I stopped, I dropped the weight by exercising, plus cutting out starch and soda and so far I lost 75 pounds and back to my original pre-pregnancy weight. I wouldn’t recommend that shot to no one, not even my worse enemy.

I always say once you go against nature, it will have rippling affects….BC is beech….men never have to endure these deathly symptoms and the enjoy it the most…so unfair

    • Drew Smith

Fifty pounds??? Maybe it wasn’t the amount of food you were consuming, but the type of food in addition to your soda and other fluids intake. Anyway, nice job with the weight loss. That’s no small feat.

    • resheart

I know three girls that got on the shot and the same thing happened. All of them gained a crazy amount of weight in a short period of time. It was such a shame b/c one of the girls had the perfect “36 28 36″ kind if build and she went straight to ” 36 55 58′ kind of build…. last time i seen her ( this was about 3 yrs after taking the shot , she had only lost maybe 10 pounds or so of the ( idk how much she gained but it looked like 60 pnds) off.

  • Veratta Pegram-Floyd

Loss of sex drive…which actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

      Havin tha same issue

  • Ms_Sunshine9898

I never had any really bad side effects ever. I used the patch and it was amazing for me. . .

    • TRUTH IS

      Dont talk too quickly…. :-/

    • Allie

Same here, I was on the pill for a couple of years and just had breast tenderness, but i’ve been off for a few months, and there is honestly not that big of a difference

    • Kim

I’ve been taking birth control off and on for the past 20 years and thankfully have had no serious side effects. I did start to feel nauseous back in 2006 when I was taking pills so my doctor switched me to the nuvaring. I haven’t looked back since. I guess it just depends on the person.

      • Ms_Sunshine9898

right, I always thought the birth control side effects were an urban legend, but I never realized so many people had issues with them outside of the depo weight gain shot. . .

  • Miss Anonymous

I tried the patch for 5 weeks. My boobs grew to almost DD from a small C and I felt nauseous everyday. When my week came after I did the 1 week break for my period, I was over it during the week for me to wear a patch for 3 weeks. I stopped and got my period again in the same month so that put the nail in the coffin for me. I am finished with trying to have a set date for my period and will let her come whenever she wants.

    Miss Anonymous – 0 : Miss Anonymous’ Period – 3

I took the pill when I was 16 before I was active because I had ovarian cysts so my periods were very painful and heavy but it made me sick so I stopped…when I finally became active I used the Nuva Ring it had me very depressed and suicidal and I gained weight I was so bloated so I took it out and I had a period for 2 whole weeks and some days it was horrible!I no longer take birth control but I think I need to lol

  • Dee

Some of these are funny and scary. The side effects I have heard about is what is keeping me from going on BC, plus I am abstinent anyway, I dont need it yet.
