Rohan Marley Speaks On Lauryn Hill: “As A Man There Are Certain Things I Don’t Accept”

September 14th, 2012 - By Brande Victorian

It’s about to get ugly in the comments section. Since people found out earlier this year that Rohan Marley is engaged to marry supermodel Isabeli Fontana, the shade thrown at him has been so real. Essentially, the reaction boiled down to: So Lauryn Hill is good enough to bear five of your children over the past 15 years or so but not to marry?

Well, for the first time that I’m aware of, the son of reggae legend Bob Marley is speaking out just a bit about his current relationship with Lauryn and what caused them to part ways last year in an interview with UK’s The Voice online that I noticed on The Jasmine Brand.

“As a man, there are certain things I don’t accept, and it just so happened that I didn’t accept certain things [in the relationship],” he told the site. “It doesn’t mean she’s a bad person or I’m a bad person. It just didn’t work out.”

The couple’s breakup in 2011 was highly publicized, although it would appear the public was late on the breakdown that occurred between the pair since Lauryn eventually made it known that her sixth child, son Micah who was born in July 2011, had a different father who is still unknown to us. And then there was that engagement news about Rohan that hit in May, about seven months after the couple got together. Given that timeline, it’s safe to assume their problems began long before we knew anything about them.

As far as Lauryn and Rohan’s relationship goes today, he says it’s getting to where it needs me.

“[Our relationship] is good as in… in terms of being a mother and father to our children, it’s good,” he said.“It’s not as perfect as one might want it to be. It’s just the way the road went.”

He doesn’t sound too broken up about it. I wonder how things are moving along with him and Isabeli since they postponed their nuptials. At the time that news broke, the story was that Isabeli wanted to get to know all of Rohan’s children before walking down the aisle. I’d be curious to see how much closer they are to that milestone.

What do you think about Rohan’s interview?

What kinda of stupid ‘ho has 5 kids without being married???? She’s a fool!!!

  • LoveBug

Maybe some of the things he won’t accept are Lauryn having unprotected sex with a man other than him and getting pregant. If that’s not a deal breaker than I’ll be damned!

5 kids from the same man and no ring? I’m sorry, but I have to side with Rohan on this one. He wasn’t good enough to be a husband but he was good enough to bring 5 out-of-wedlock babies in this world and have the 6th with another man?!

  • me

I am a fairly open person but I can certainly say I can see why people in my parents’ generation use the whole “milk for free” cliche. What reason would this man have to marry her? He’s gotten all the perks and privileges for YEARS that go along with being a husband without having to take the leap. Once she started having kids for him and running around talking about how committed she was to him – with no ring – the incentive went out the window. She has stood by and given up her own career and legacy to uphold the name of a family that she really was never officially a part of if you keep it 100. She ain’t the only chick who has birthed a bunch of Marley babies and she won’t be the last either. I don’t know what her deal is but she almost acts brainwashed. And as far as the Marley men, everybody knows white women are their weakness. Is anyone surprised he found some chick who is “other” to wife up? I’m not.

    • Drew Smith

Curiosity has gotten the best of me. Exactly what are the perks and privileges of being a husband (as opposed to a boyfriend, or otherwise significant others)?

      • MLS2698

Curiosity has gotten the best of me. Exactly what are the perks and privileges of NOT being someones wife, and bearing a basketball team worth of children with a man rather than making a stable home for ALL to enjoy, and flourish in?

        • Drew Smith

Pseudo-witty response; however, my question wasn’t of the rhetorical variety. You penned the note above as though there’s some magical existence awaiting a man after he marries a woman (read: … all the perks and privileges for YEARS that go along with being a husband…); yet, when asked about said perks and privileges, you responded with a confusing quasi-question. The answer — alone — will do… (thanks)

          • MLS2698

I’ve got a question: Why do men come to this site, and ask women questions they don’t want the answer to? The real answer is total commitment through marriage. Now, karate quasi chop that with your thesaurus.

            • Drew Smith

You’re answer’s “Total commitment through marriage…” No wonder why you were so hesitant to provide your extensive”perks and privileges” of being a husband. Yeah — FAIL. Try again, and this time make sure you write something worth reading. Also, you asked why men come to this site and ask questions. Obviously, for the pure comedy of the answers provided, silly!!! So cute. What am I gonna do with you??? LOL

              • Zem

*Your answers. What am I going to do with you? LOL.

                • Drew Smith

I’ll take that one on the chin. I can blame it on laziness for not taking care to account for auto-correct, but I still don’t want a pass. My football coach at the University of Maryland used to always say, “Practice doesn’t make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.” Touchè. I want another chance, Zem. I won’t let you down.

                  • MLS2698

Drew sounds just like some of the trolling, dramatic women on this site, who always have an insult ( the word silly) to go along with the dislike of a blog. It sounds so SWEEET of him.

                    • Drew Smith

Silly = insult? We’re certainly not in Kansas anymore…

                    • MLS2698

I’ve never been there, so I guess you are on your own. You’re still sweet. And you can meet me on another more recent subject. There is the child support matter on front page.

                    • Drew Smith

                      Let’s have a look…

              • MLS2698

You are going to find a site for men. And maybe it will tell ALL of you how to commit to a woman before putting a basketball team worth of children in her womb. We, at this site, are always asking women not to use their bodies to benefit a man’s surface desires, but rather, our intimate need of true love and commitment. You are new to this, I see.

                • Drew Smith

I love this —> “And maybe it will tell ALL of you how to commit to a woman before putting a basketball team worth of children in her womb.” Because a woman is some hapless creature walking the face of the Earth and doesn’t know up from down; ergo, she’s at a man’s mercy when he wants to put a basketball team worth of children in HER womb. She lacks the wherewithal to actually participate in the decision-making process that goes along with becoming pregnant, so we, men, definitely need to find a site that will tell us how to commit to her before moving forward with using her as we please.

                • Drew Smith

“We, at this site, are always asking women not to use their bodies to benefit a man’s surface desires, but rather, our intimate need of true love and commitment.” <— Knock it off.

                  • MLS2698

Great! You can cut and paste.

        • love98

Please do not forget that the he was still married to his first wife. He had a helpmate with the luxry of walking away at anytime. Some of the women of today do not mind doing this which makes it harder on women that are willing to wait#milking and aging the cow for free.

          • guest

Get the facts straight. He divorced his first wife in 1996.

  • Shay

Lauryn is wealthy. She may not be as wealthy as she was, but she has money. Who says she wants to give that all up? Also, who said Rohan was faithful? There might have been some things Lauren wouldn’t accept as a woman from him. Also, I think Lauryn is happier as a mother than a wife or girlfriend.

  • Blackntan

    That’s that Dexter St. Jock

  • Nigel Johnson

lol I believe they broke up way before 2011. Her old makeup artist confirmed that they had been broken up for a while. These are two sentences, but couldnt it be that Mr. Marley was acting up, and she didnt think he was ready? why 5 kids? Some ppl/cultures dont believe in birth control. Their last child they had was in 2007 i believe. So who knows how long they’ve been apart. The media likes to stir up mess.

  • http://www.facebook.com/barbara.codner Barbara Codner

Lauryn never seemed to have her mind right. She was Wyclef’s mistress and then she met Rohan. Wyclef thought that she was carrying his baby when it was really Rohan’s. Now, she has a sixth child with another man. Rohan’s right. She wasn’t ready and not because she didn’t want to marry him but because she couldn’t get her sh*t straight.

    • Sheena

You act like you know her personally. Is your sh*t straight?

  • Trisha_B

Well can’t speak much on the interview when only 2 sentences was posted -__- . But i don’t get why people can’t believe Lauryn didn’t want to get married & want to blame Rohan? Rohan was married to his 1st wife, they had 2 kids together. He proposed to the other lady. So don’t you think he would have thought to propose to his 5 kids mother? Lauryn ran & had her 6th baby by another man. Lauryn has control over her body. She decided to keep reproducing w/ the man. B/c you wouldn’t catch me having 5 kids w/ someone that didn’t put a ring on this finger. it’s clear she don’t want to be married. I remember her saying awhile back they had a “union” but i guess Rohan wanted the real deal.

    • Bbydlly

Have you been blessing the sky w.this man?u sound like he laying up w.u..some pple man.

  • BlackElleWoods

The cover of that news article says that he wanted to marry HER, but SHE wasn’t ready. Or did everyone miss that…

    • Jelly

Obviously the author missed that. It wasn’t mentioned in the article. So typical of MN.

  • TAM

    YOU BASICALLY SAID NOTHING NEW.NEXT

  • JaneDoe

I don’t get having five kids with someone who you love but not want to marry… Five kids tho?

    • MLS2698

What are the ” certain things ” he doesn’t accept in a relationship, cause it can’t be the ability to put five babies in a woman, then ” move on.” I think these people live in their own microcosm of crazy.

      • Trisha_B

Maybe he kept knocking her up in hopes she’ll marry him? lol kind of like women would purposely get pregnant to keep the man around. But Lauryn clearly wasn’t falling for that since she wasted no time getting pregnant by another man lol

    • MLS2698

What are the ” certain things ” he doesn’t accept in a relationship, cause it can’t be the ability to put five babies in a woman, then ” move on.” I think these people live in their own microcosm of crazy.

  • TRUTH IS

Blah blah blah….if you really love her you will wait until she was/is ready. Not move on quickly and propose…..The Marley boys are womanizers….I was watching their dad’s documentary he had a wife, baby moma and girlfriend….am I missing something here…Love Bob Marley tho…very profound individual!

    • Kells

I know I’m going to get thumbs down for this but thats how MOST Jamaican men are. I am Jamaican and I can say out of all my uncles, grandfathers, and father included only one managed to have all his children with one woman but there were always other women.. Just how they get down

      • NicPal

Your not going to get any thumbs down from me…..agreed!

      • TRUTH IS

Island men….they think its ok to run rackeer and hv outside children and abuse their women. They are bold with it there even the entire village will know or find out about their philanderer behavior. I am island girl so I know how they do….smh.

        • TRUTH IS

          racketeer*

          • BBBEE25TEE

Are you Trini, Guyanese, or Bajan….just curious, I only hear them say racketeer lol…

            • TRUTH IS

Lolol…am Vincy (from St. Vincent & the Grenadine) :) )

              • BBBEE25TEE

Oh ok Vincy! Cool…I thought of Vincy after I already posted the question.

                • TRUTH IS

                  :) )

        • Treacle234

You an island girl with a tormented background. I’m sorry but my father raised me from birth, he is an integral part in my life and he is still here. His father (my grandfather) raised all of his 11 children, he was married to his mother (my grandma) and was an integral part of his (my dad’s) and all his children’s life. My dad has many memories of his father. My dad took care of his father as he aged. SO YOU are DEAD wrong for making sweeping generalisations about island men. Sorry your dad was a deadbeat but mine and my grandpa weren’t.

          • TRUTH IS

Like really, you are making assumptions….my father and mother are still married (they were married at age 17 and 21)….doesn’t mean she didn’t put up with a lot of bs from him….including racketeering….most caribbean women are faithful since most are christian countries…..I call a spade a spade.,…am not going to sit up and act like my family is perfect cus none is……

          • Bree

Unfortunately, you are the exception and not the rule.

            • Treacle234

Oh stop being so bitter. Let it go.

      • sabrina

        yupp, pretty much!

      • Yay!

So it’s culturally acceptable to have many partners in the islands? Philandering goes on in every culture, but why do you think men are so bold in the islands? I’m not an island lady, just curious since s few have agreed with you.

      • http://www.facebook.com/barbara.codner Barbara Codner

No thumbs down here!! I’m a Jamerican and it’s true. Sleeping around and having kids with different women is pretty much the norm. :-(

      • Trisha_B

Well i’m Jamaican, & i guess my family & extended family are rare breeds. B/c my mom’s brothers (3 of them) are married to the mother of their kids & have been so for years. My aunts are married to jamaican men who only have kids w/ them. My aunt’s husband family is the same way. I really don’t get why people think this only happens in jamaica. When there are PLENTY of black american men who are dropping seeds in women left & right. & don’t claim them half the time.

        • JaneDoe

The statement said MOST Jamaican men tho not all.

          • Tee

Most is still inaccurate. I am pretty sure whoever made that statement doesn’t know most of the Jamaican men so even that is reaching

      • Mztisa

Sad but true statements of Jamaican men. And the thing I dont get is how the women allow it to go down! Jamaican women are a crazy! lol at least my mom, grandma, and aunties are (kanye shrug)

        • Tee

Yes we Jamaican women are crazy just like every other woman and same garbage for men! Its not just Jamaica or just the islands. These statements have nothing to back it up but a bunch of people’s opinions. Its no different than a white person saying most black men are unfaithful. Really do you know most black men? What statistics do you have to back it up. The word most implies that one must know for a fact that 9 out of ten does it and frankly since we don’t have a full sample of the population that is inaccurate. It’s a generaluzation

          • Mztisa

Wowzers! Calm ALL THE WAY DOWN!!! These statements are FACT in my family and the families of my Jamaican friends! Unless you’ve lived it, dont come for me with your its not most Jamaican men bs! If you re-read my post I never said most Jamaican men. I speak based on my own experience and based on the replies to the original message, I’m not alone in my thoughts/experiences. And since you must be nit-picky about my “generalizations” know that most is anything greater than 50 percent of a population since it is the larger portion of said population and since you cant provide me with any substantive information that backs up your claim please proceed to have serveral seats ______

      • Bree

True ting sistren! My family is Jamaican too…I wouldn’t touch a Jamaican man with a ten foot pole if I was single. There is a reason my husband is white. I get a lot of anger from other black women for marrying a white man; meanwhile, these fools have kids for Jamaicans who don’t care about them.

    • me

I don’t understand it because that mentality is literally killing people in the islands and destroying their health. The stats on HIV and STDs are horrifying. My ex is West Indian (though very Americanized, he came here as a small child) and they will find 101 ways to explain “polyamory” even if they don’t do it themselves. Just seems kinda crazy to me. But whatever, to each his own.

    • Trisha_B

A man will do what a woman allows. if Bob’s wife would have checked him & told him he choose her & their kids or she’s leaving, i’m sure Bob would have straightened up. But no, she stuck around & allowed the cheating to happen right in front of her eyes. Jamaican’s talk about her dumb ways. & said she didn’t care about the cheating b/c she was the only wife so she gets all the benefits. When she died, she got control over the Marley empire. Yes, Bob was a musical genius but lacked common sense in the relationship department, but women are to be blamed in this too b/c they allow this to happen.
