(WSJ) — New York’s most powerful politicians wrapped Rep. Charles Rangel in a boisterous public embrace Wednesday night, casting aside at least for one night the ethics cloud that has threatened to force him out of Congress.

“I’ve been to a lot of funerals, but this damn sure ain’t no funeral,” Mr. Rangel told about 800 cheering supporters packed into a ballroom at the Plaza Hotel in midtown Manhattan.

The 80-year-old congressman has been under intense pressure to resign in the wake of House ethics committee charges filed last month. Some in his party have urged him to resign, believing his departure would improve their chances of keeping hard-won seats and their voting majority.
