What inspired the film?

This film was inspired by an actual incident in Howard Beach area of Queens borough. If you’re not familiar this is what happened. Three black men went into a pizzeria in Queens, after their car broke down. Shortly after, a group of white teenagers yelled a racial epithet at the three men and a verbal altercation took place. Later, the white teens returned with 7-9 friends. The three black teens tried to run. One escaped, one was beaten with baseball bats, tree limbs and fists and the third was killed when he was run over by a car in the middle of the melee.

I love how Spike always used the same actors for many of his movies! This is of course another classic!! Did you guys already do a list like this for School Daze? And Crooklyn? And Clockers? (LOL… CLEARLY I’m a huge Spike Lee fan!)

Brilliant. I should’ve known that Spike Lee had such good symbolism and what not in this film. He’s such an amazing director .. creative genius.

I always thought Mookie threw the can to distract the people and save Sal’s life.

I’m starting to think I may be a little too old to be reading MN. And I’m only in my early 30′s. Anyone who was around the time the movie came out already knows these so called “secrets”. This is nothing you can’t find checking out IMBD or reading any old Spike interviews..

There’s nothing wrong with enlightening someone that has not sought this knowledge beforehand.

i totally agree. im 33 and from Brooklyn. most of the things on here i already knew. Except about Robert Deniro.

any film that makes you think this much is a classic! We get so bombarded with the bull that alot of things that are actually thought provoking get written off.
