What does it mean to have a dent in your lip?
I’m not sure, but apparently that’s what Jennifer Hudson had to fix while shooting her breakout role in Dreamgirls. According to E! News, in an interview airing this Sunday on OWN, the singer told Oprah that she had to get lip injections as a result of the dent.
“When I did Dreamgirls I actually had to get my dent right here injected because it was affecting the lighting,” she said, referring to her top lip. “And when I got it done the doctor was like ‘I do not want to do this do you realize people come in here and pay to have the lips you have naturally.’ And I was like, ‘I don’t want to but I have to for the movie!’”
Complaining that her lips affect the lighting sounds really petty, but Jennifer did what she had to do for the role (and ended up becoming a household name as a result). Beyond the lip thing, she opened up to Oprah about how surprised she was that Hollywood described her as a “big girl”.
“Already I had lost like 60 pounds then, I was exercising everyday I got down to a size 12 and I got to Hollywood and they were like, ‘How do you feel being the big girl?’” Hudson shares with Oprah Winfrey. “And I was like, ‘Who are they talking to?’ I literally looked around like this is normal, this is fine, this is average, where I come from it’s totally fine, so I couldn’t understand.”
“Another one they would say is ‘Do you feel insecure being a big girl?’ And I thought, ‘Why should I feel insecure?’ I remember saying ‘I have the height of a model, lips people pay for, you know, things like that,’”.
The 60 pounds she is talking about is the weight she’s she lost during American Idol because of stress. For Dreamgirls she gained 20-pounds (and two sizes) for her role as power singer Effie White. Since then the 5-foot-9 singer has reportedly lost 80 pounds, slimming down from a size 16 to a size 6 and is now a popular spokeswoman for Weight Watchers.
As for her lips, it’s not clear if her injections were permanent or temporary. According to the Beverly Hills Institute of Aethestic and Reconstructive Surgery temporary lip injections like Juvederm can last a few months, but it is not uncommon for lip augmentation patients to seek a more permanent solution.
Honestly, I’m surprised that she even admitted to the injections. It’s definitely not a big deal especially considering how popular plastic surgery is among celebrities, but it seems that mums the word in Hollywood and we’re left to play the “who got what done” guessing game. Jennifer being honest about something that small definitely makes her come across as genuine. But then again, people tell Oprah everything.
What do you think? Are you surprised that she got lip injections?
