That’s Dead Wrong: Sherman Hemsley Still Not Buried Because Of Will Dispute

Families know how to act up when someone with a little bit of money dies don’t they? In case you were wondering why there were never any details reported on Sherman Hemsley’s funeral it’s because it hasn’t happened yet — and it likely won’t for a long time. “The Jefferson’s” actor has been dead for over a month now, 36 days to be exact, yet his remains still remain refrigerated in an El Paso, TX, funeral home because of a dispute over the validity of his will.

News One reports:

In the will Hemsley signed six weeks before dying of lung cancer July 24, he named Flora Enchinton, 56, whom he called a “beloved partner,” as sole beneficiary of his estate, which is estimated in court documents to be more than $50,000.

The will is being contested by Richard Thornton of Philadelphia who claims to be Hemsley’s brother and says the will might not have been made by the actor.

Enchinton told the Associated Press on Wednesday that she had been friends with Hemsley and had been his manager for more than 20 years. Over the time she, Hemsley, and Hemsley’s friend Kenny Johnston, 76, lived together, she said he never mentioned any relatives.

“Some people come out of the woodwork – they think Sherman, they think money,” Enchinton said. “But the fact is that I did not know Sherman when he was in the limelight. I met them when they (Hemsley and Johnston) came running from Los Angeles with not one penny, when there was nothing but struggle.”

With no date set yet for this case to be heard in court, there’s no telling when Sherman’s body will finally be laid to rest. Whatever the deal is with his will, I’m sure this isn’t what he had in mind.

Give me a break. There should be no controversy over this. Where did this brother spring from? Where was he all these while? if Sherman did not say where he should be buried, his good friend and biz partner should be the best person to decided this. Where did this Richard whatever, come from? U kidding me? It does not work like that. There is more to this than meets the eyes. His interest is not really the burial, he wants to inherit. There is just no need for court battles and tussles.

James Brown, Gary Coleman, Michael Jackson and now Sherman. People should be laid to rest in a timely fashion. Whatever is going on shouldn’t interfere with giving someone a proper burial. Lord Have Mercy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is just evil. Somebody could just front the money until the thing is hashed out. Why keep the man in the deep freeze? The only people that will see in real money here are the lawyers. smh.

This is sad, really sad if this man is indeed his brother whaer the hell was he all these years and didn’t bother to contact him before he died or even when he was sick? Money comes and money goes if he was really his brother he should be mourning him and not trying to get what little bit of money he had left. It’s clear to me that he doesn’t have any rel love for his “brother” because if he did he wouldn’t be wasting time contesting a will instead of laying him to rest. 50,000 dollars, really? I know it must be agold mine to some people but is is really worth al this? His lawyer fees and court costs are gonna cost more than in the end, but the truth beyond that is that it’s not worth fighting over any amount of money relative, spouse, signifigant other, or otherwise.

Can someone help me understand why they can’t lay him to rest AND continue to dispute the will? I don’t understand and I think it’s a shame.

I was going to ask the same question. What does one have to do with the other?

  • Starr_32

It is amazing how all of a sudden “family members” come out of the woodwork when money is involved. Money changes people. It is really sad, for people don’t even care about the deceased person, they just all about money. It is just plain greedy. “Greed” is certainly taking over in people. It is sad.

      Amen!
