1. Relaxed or Natural it’s the same principles for hair growth.

Let’s get this one out of the way first. Doesn’t matter what team you are on the FACTS to growing your hair long are the same for both. While a relaxer is a chemical alteration to the hair follicle, it can be properly done to still allow healthy hair growth. Natural hair Nazis, please put down your guns. You can also heat train your hair while growing it out and you’re still following the same general principles that Team Natural will for long hair. I own two books on hair growth for Black women, one by Chicoro who has widely shaped a lot of the natural hair practices that are in vogue today and the other by Cathy Howse, who has relaxed hair. When I was learning to take care of my very coarse natural hair these were the two authors that were recommended. And they both preach the same thing about growing hair to long lengths.

I wear a weave during the winter. It actually helps to keep my head warm because I live in a cold climate. But I only do the weave for 6 mos, the other six I wear my hair natural. When I take the weave out my hair has always grown 2 to 4 inches. I don’t wear the weave to get long hair, because I I wear it because it’s easier to manage without using heat or chemicals on my own hair.

I use the same stylist as Cathy Howse in Denver (Ed is AMAZING by the way)… she does NOT have a relaxer. She has not used any chemicals in her hair in over 9 years. Even mentions that on her site. That being said, her books and products do cover growing your hair and still using a relaxer.

Natural here-I use no heat what so ever. I definitely don’t wash my hair every week-it will dry my hair out badly, about once a month is doing justice for me. I’ve recently noticed a growth in my hair in the last 3-4 months. Im not sure what im doing differently but I’ll continue with this hair regimen. But it’s always fun to hear about new ways to add growth.

I use Domincan products. They work the best for me….wash every week, deep conditioner every week….roller set….wrap…..and go!! #noblowout……since I stop with the blow out I have less split ends…less trims…more growth.

  • Moni

I wear my hair in a ponytail all week, i only wear it out on weekends, and its relaxed…my hair grows

Is anyone else annoyed by the video playing constantly and the ads at the bottom of the page. Ugh, very annoying.

Install Adblock, I haven’t seen an add on the internet in years…

Yeah I have the same problem here:-(

I’m glad the writer put emphasis on the fact that hair growth can be achieved regardless of whether one has a relaxer or not.

I think Genetics play a huge factor in determining hair growth. I have never seen two women in the same family ( mom & dad) with two different hair lengths….I know families with all the women have very long hair and families with all women have bald edges!!

    • diggy p.

I honestly think that has more to do with what they do to their hair as opposed to genetics. No one is meant to have bald edges. That’s too much perming and ponytailing. If a mom does it, she will do it to her daughters..thus, teaching them the same practices.

I definitely believe that genetics has to do with the thickness and rate of growth in one’s hair. And of course what is done to the hair determines is the thickness and growth is retained.
Male baldness and graying early is usually genetic so why wouldn’t genetics be involved with hair characteristics in women.

My grandma told me that if I put less product on my scalp my hair will grow faster and she’s right. Plus I believe exercise helps too because when I did the BC 7 years ago and when I exercise I would grow like an inch every 3 weeks.

Wonder how many rebuttals this article will get with women who’ve been lead to believe that The Creator designed a large percentage of us with follicles that can grown no more than 5-10 inches of hair lol…never considering that there are large portions of us who’ve, for generations, been taught POOR hair care practices. Our diets have changed, hair trends, change, and expectations on what is managed or properly styled have changed drastically; to the detriment of many young women’s manes.

Hmm I never had a problem with growing my hair it’s past my back bra strap. But my tips: limit the flat irons and curlin irons, wash your hair every week, find a good leave in conditioner and plat it before you go to bed, oh and limit ponytails (very damaging)

    • Courtney

if you limit ponytails then what other protective styles are there besides a feaux bob, braids and a bun?
