From The Root

Shortly after it was announced that Rep. Paul Ryan would join the Romney ticket as this year’s Republican vice presidential candidate, I wrote a piece titled, “What We Know About Paul Ryan and Blacks.”

Wel,l I recently learned of another significant addition to this list.

As reported on Twitter by CNN’s Pete Hamby, Ryan said he has a black sister-in-law, but perhaps even more interesting, his “college sweetheart” was African American.

So here is the million-dollar question: Is the fact that Ryan has dated interracially a noteworthy detail to consider when analyzing his politics and policies?

So, is this the new version of “some of my best friends are Black”? I’ve dated a Black person before?

    • http://twitter.com/MmeSaur A G

      It’s not new, trust me.

  • B

Nope. He does not get any “brownie points (no pun intended) simply because he had a black girlfriend, although it is nice to know. When it all boils down to it, those he support will support him. If he does not support the cause of black people then he does not deserve the vote. The fact that he had a black girlfriend eons ago in college does not mean he supports black people. It just means he had a black girlfriend.

    • Mytisque

      True.

  • Ann

No. I think he is an idiot. Anybody that would come up with a medicare plan that seniors and other people would have to come out of their pockets with lots of money when that so called voucher runs out. I would not vote for him.

  • moonrose4me

    None at all!
    OBAMA 2012!!

  • FromUR2UB

    Wins no points with me.

  • Oli

    HAD… moving on.

  • Kayo

    I don’t think it makes a difference.

  • L-Boogie

    No!

  • Hello_Kitty81

    Who cares, I’m still voting for O B A M A!

  • lalatarea

This IS a dumb question on the surface but if you read the article its linked to it is actually a pretty good read and you can see why some people would ask that.

  • OMSS

What? Is it some kind of competition? Well, he is only gunning for vice presidency- even if this was Romney this information is not worth ish in the grand scheme of things. On other side of the ring is Obama. He has the following:
    One black parent
    A black wife
    And claims the title ‘black’

Who’s winning in the “I’m so in touch with black folk”? LOL

It doesn’t matter. I am only concerned about his politics. It isn’t looking good so far.

  • MLS2698

White men have always had access to black women under the radar. whether it was sl@ve row, or the dorm room, they, white men, have been sampling the goods for centuries. BUT RYAN MARRIED A WHITE WOMAN. Why don’t we find out who this ” sweetheart ” was, and how she feels.

  • Aja

    I agree.

  • Wow

And we all know some of the biggest haters of Black folks is other black folks so no it has no bearings on my vote for President O.

  • http://www.facebook.com/nikia.dshiznit Nikia D-Shiznit

No. It’s a fact that people like him view his black friends/relatives/girlfriends as exceptions to the stereotypes Ryan and his constituents have.

  • Kay

If his girlfriend was a fuccking smurf it wouldnt change the fact that he’s a sexist pig with no regard for the women of this country.

    • Mytisque

      I agree.

  • Nikol.com

Mn don’t spew your stupidity on us.you wana be stupid, you do that on your own house&own time.ugh.too ignorant,i’m shocked.

  • Candacey Doris

No it doesn’t matter. Who you ate doesn’t change what you believe. It definitely doesn’t change his misogynistic platform. Next!

    • Mia

Thank you! At the end of the day I don’t care if he shared a bed with Hattie Mcdaniel. I’m voting for the candidate that puts money in my pockets and the Republicans have shown that they are not for the working middle class. Vote them in office, the middle class will become extinct.

      • Treacle234

Finally, a sensible comment you made I agree with.

        • Mia

My previous comments were sensible as well. Don’t blame me if you were too stupid to grasp them and I called you on your stupidity. Get over it. It happens..

    • B

      That’s right.

  • Anne

No, it’s not worth noting. OBAMA 2012!!!

  • Kenedy

What a stupid question….no, ofcourse it doesn’t matter…why should that factor into anything??
