You Better Be Careful: 7 Surefire Ways To Lose Your Job

August 24th, 2012 - By Kariba Lang Williams

Whether you know it or not, there is still a recession going on. This means that there are plenty of people in line for employment and would love to have a job just like yours. There are seven things you can stop doing at work to avoid being in the opposite position.

Check the list…

Consistent Absent/Lateness Excuses

First you don’t feel well. Then you missed the bus. Now there’s no hot water in your building. Every week, it’s the same thing in a different order. In the beginning, there was sympathy and understanding, now the job just needs to get done. The remedy for all three of those situations is easy: get your act together. One, don’t make calling in sick a habit. Two, get up earlier so that you’re not missing the bus. Three, boil some water and hit the hot spots with a ho* bath. People with 101 excuses about why they can’t show up to do what they get paid for are some of the first individuals employers look to get rid of when layoffs need to take place.

I must say, there has only been one or two jobs I have ever had where someone was fired for lateness.

Sadly, these are the things that actually get people promoted at my current place of employment. Yeah. Not joking.

I’d love to be able to clock in, work and leave. But whenever you work with a group of women they want you to be social. Why o you never come with us when we go out? Why don’t you talk to us on the phone? You never spend time with us at lunch….We’re COWORKERS not friends! Women will call you out for being professional just because they can’t stand the thought that you might not like them, might be talking about them when their back is turned, or because they feel they don’t know enough about you.I love working with men, because they don’t want to know you everything about you and don’t care about what you do outside of work unless they’re looking for something or genuinely want a friend.

I work with men and they are just like the women. It’s mainly the black men too. They always wondering why I don’t talk to them. Oh please, go finish building helicopters. They complain about doing overtime and working weekends but want to spend the work day wondering why I don’t hold conversations with them.

The ones that complain are looking for something from you. And you know what it is. Don’t fool yourself, it’s not (just) your conversation they’re after.

      Let the church say, “Amen.”

I hear you, but I think it is important to be specific. For example: “I love working with men, because the men who I have worked with don’t want to know everything about me or care about what I do outside of work unless they are looking for something or genuinely want a friend.”
