Oh, Really? Vanessa Bryant Says She Could Only Marry a Championship-Winning Baller

It is an extremely rare case that you hear something straight from Vanessa Bryant’s mouth, which is why it’s so telling that when she did opt to do press she fed right into the golddigging rumors that have followed her since she married Kobe Bryant at the age of 18.

NY Mag recently did a feature on the “The Belles of B-Ball: How NBA Players’ Wives Vie for Fashion Dominance” which included the LA Lakers basketball wife as well as Knicks player Tyson Chandler’s wife Kimberly and Amare Stoudemire’s fiancee Alexis Welch, but by far the most interesting tidbits came from Mrs. Bryant.

Here are a few highlights from her interview:

How she feels about all the attention on NBA wives

“I thought things would go away, if you don’t feed into the b.s., and no one would think about you. Now I realize I do have to talk about certain things. Still, I don’t like the limelight. There’s a lot of good you can do with fame, like creating awareness for a foundation, but a lot of negativity comes along with it.”

Whether things are on the mend with Kobe

“Um, yes. We’re working on things.”

Her take on basketball and being a basketball wife

“Oh, yes, I love basketball. And I know what goes on behind the scenes, so I have a different perspective on things, but still, I do. I certainly would not want to be married to somebody that can’t win championships. If you’re sacrificing time away from my family and myself for the benefit of winning championships, then winning a championship should happen every single year.”

Drama with Khloe Kardashian

“Everything is false. Khloé was at my 29th birthday. I don’t get involved in the drama. I’ve been with Kobe since I was 17, so I’ve seen plenty of players, and plenty of wives, come and go. It wouldn’t benefit me whatsoever to have an issue with any of them, whether they were a girlfriend, or a wife, a person-of-a-month, or … you know. And I think that’s why the Lakers as an organization give me the access that I have, that other wives don’t have.”

“If you notice, I am the only one allowed in that tunnel [to the Laker's locker room]. I don’t like standing outside and giving him a kiss in front of all the cameras. So I stand in there to get away from them. But then the cameras end up following. And if the girls are there, sometimes, that’s their kiss good night for Daddy, and when he comes home, they’re asleep.”

Misconceptions about her

“I think people imagine that I sit at home with all the time in the world to do my hair and makeup, but that’s certainly not the case. I’m up at 6:30 in the morning with my kids. I’m taking them wherever they need to go,” adding that she doesn’t use a nanny—“That’s the way I was raised.”

There’s also some talk in the interview about Vanessa’s sense of style, her 25-carat Valentines Day ring, and staying at the plaza, but anything of substance pretty much came out in the snippets above.

I get the feeling Vanessa is justifying Kobe’s infidelity under the guise of being a hardcore basketball fan who just happens to reap enormous financial benefits when her husband brings home that championship money, but maybe that’s just me.

What do you think about her interview?

I agree with @Tee Elyse. It didn’t come across as gold-diggery to me. It sounds like she is saying that with all the time he spends away he needs to prove that it was worth it. That makes sense to me.

and what couple dry snitches all the time. If you are happy in your marriage you tend to your own.

We need to stop finding fault in their relationship. Who knows what kind of arrangement they have going on. If they have an open marriage, if they are only married and living under the same house for the sake of their children. Please stop making assumptions. Leave well alone.

lol Her statement was taken and is being presented WAAAY out of context. I agree with her. Even if my husband were a small business owner, if he’s spending a huge amount of time away from his family to work on that business I’ll be damned if I don’t want or even need to see that business flourish in some way! like..what else are you doing if not? might need to find a new line of work. But then I guess looks at the subject of the article…I don’t expect too many people here to agree with much of anything Vanessa Bryant has to say.

A black woman would have been blasted for making this kind of admission.

  • Ms_Mara

Very misleading title! That wasn’t what she was saying at all. lol She’s just basically saying make all that time away from me and the kids REALLY COUNT by winning.

It would be helpful if someone could just clear this up for me, are they no longer getting a divorce?

    • amandalea

They already are divorced. she got 75 million and 3 houses

      • Anon

Wrong. They are not divorced. They reached their settlement which gave her the money and houses but the divorce was not finalized and they’re now working to not get divorced at all.

        • Veratta Pegram-Floyd

Thanks for the clarification, I just wasn’t clear on what was going on.

Well Kobe like it….let her be a golddigger. After all these years with Kobe who cares what she is. I would be a goldigger to. She stayed with his cheating butt, she better get some diamonds out of it. This article was useless.

    • Mystique

I agree. Because if she don’t get his money, some white woman sure will.
