Oh, Really? Vanessa Bryant Says She Could Only Marry a Championship-Winning Baller

It is an extremely rare case that you hear something straight from Vanessa Bryant’s mouth, which is why it’s so telling that when she did opt to do press she fed right into the golddigging rumors that have followed her since she married Kobe Bryant at the age of 18.

NY Mag recently did a feature on the “The Belles of B-Ball: How NBA Players’ Wives Vie for Fashion Dominance” which included the LA Lakers basketball wife as well as Knicks player Tyson Chandler’s wife Kimberly and Amare Stoudemire’s fiancee Alexis Welch, but by far the most interesting tidbits came from Mrs. Bryant.

Here are a few highlights from her interview:

How she feels about all the attention on NBA wives

“I thought things would go away, if you don’t feed into the b.s., and no one would think about you. Now I realize I do have to talk about certain things. Still, I don’t like the limelight. There’s a lot of good you can do with fame, like creating awareness for a foundation, but a lot of negativity comes along with it.”

Whether things are on the mend with Kobe

“Um, yes. We’re working on things.”

Her take on basketball and being a basketball wife

“Oh, yes, I love basketball. And I know what goes on behind the scenes, so I have a different perspective on things, but still, I do. I certainly would not want to be married to somebody that can’t win championships. If you’re sacrificing time away from my family and myself for the benefit of winning championships, then winning a championship should happen every single year.”

Drama with Khloe Kardashian

“Everything is false. Khloé was at my 29th birthday. I don’t get involved in the drama. I’ve been with Kobe since I was 17, so I’ve seen plenty of players, and plenty of wives, come and go. It wouldn’t benefit me whatsoever to have an issue with any of them, whether they were a girlfriend, or a wife, a person-of-a-month, or … you know. And I think that’s why the Lakers as an organization give me the access that I have, that other wives don’t have.”

“If you notice, I am the only one allowed in that tunnel [to the Laker's locker room]. I don’t like standing outside and giving him a kiss in front of all the cameras. So I stand in there to get away from them. But then the cameras end up following. And if the girls are there, sometimes, that’s their kiss good night for Daddy, and when he comes home, they’re asleep.”

Misconceptions about her

“I think people imagine that I sit at home with all the time in the world to do my hair and makeup, but that’s certainly not the case. I’m up at 6:30 in the morning with my kids. I’m taking them wherever they need to go,” adding that she doesn’t use a nanny—“That’s the way I was raised.”

There’s also some talk in the interview about Vanessa’s sense of style, her 25-carat Valentines Day ring, and staying at the plaza, but anything of substance pretty much came out in the snippets above.

I get the feeling Vanessa is justifying Kobe’s infidelity under the guise of being a hardcore basketball fan who just happens to reap enormous financial benefits when her husband brings home that championship money, but maybe that’s just me.

What do you think about her interview?

I agree with @Tee Elyse. It didn’t come across as gold-diggery to me. It sounds like she is saying that with all the time he spends away he needs to prove that it was worth it. That makes sense to me.

and what couple dry snitches all the time. If you are happy in your marriage you tend to your own.

maybe she needs to show more personality idk but she just seems lame to me.

We need to stop finding fault in their relationship. Who knows what kind of arrangement they have going on. If they have an open marriage, if they are only married and living under the same house for the sake of their children. Please stop making assumptions. Leave well alone.

lol Her statement was taken and is being presented WAAAY out of context. I agree with her. Even if my husband were a small business owner, if he’s spending a huge amount of time away from his family to work on that business I’ll be damned if I don’t want or even need to see that business flourish in some way! like..what else are you doing if not? might need to find a new line of work. But then I guess looks at the subject of the article…I don’t expect too many people here to agree with much of anything Vanessa Bryant has to say.

  • Mystique

A black woman would have been blasted for making this kind of admission.

  • Ms_Mara

Very misleading title! That wasn’t what she was saying at all. lol She’s just basically saying make all that time away from me and the kids REALLY COUNT by winning.

  • Veratta Pegram-Floyd

It would be helpful if someone could just clear this up for me, are they no longer getting a divorce?

    • amandalea

They already are divorced. she got 75 million and 3 houses

      • Anon

Wrong. They are not divorced. They reached their settlement which gave her the money and houses but the divorce was not finalized and they’re now working to not get divorced at all.

        • Veratta Pegram-Floyd

Thanks for the clarification, I just wasn’t clear on what was going on.

  • bigcnash

That Chick is a BOUGIE Mess… If ya’ll chicks can’t see that then ya blind or a low budget version of her … Even Drake know she ain’t ish … LoL … She started off as a Uneducated broke Groupie Hoe and now she just a kept Trophy Wife tryin act like she all that . “B” please … you want a championship …. Congrats on being the only girl in the tunnel Nessa. Yaaawwwn. Who cares. Your husband cheats on you every day and you stay because your too much of a chicken$%^& to live on your own without the glamour of being Kobe’s wife. You love the lifestyle not Kobe. I hope your beautiful daughters don’t end up in a sad relationship like that.

Well Kobe like it….let her be a golddigger. After all these years with Kobe who cares what she is. I would be a goldigger to. She stayed with his cheating butt, she better get some diamonds out of it. This article was useless.

    • Mystique

I agree. Because if she don’t get his money, some white woman sure will.

  • Machelle Kwan

She didn’t mean it in a golddigging way, but seriously, what else is she gonna do? She trapped the man young she might as well stay with him.

OMG… more BB wives attention. Why do we give these women a platform to even think thier opinions matter. Stick to fundraising for non relevant organizations, hair and make-up. With all that time you have running your kids around town (all 4 hours of the day )(because they should be in school) you should have invested in some college courses. Speech perhaps, since you’ve clearly yet to master the English language. I know it isnt the reporters fault that you came across that way to us educated americans. I guess all that time spent away from home really sucked the past two years considering the Lakers didnt WIN!

  • Magg

Im with her on that one… You better win that ring… Isn’t it your job anyway! You go Vanessa!!

  • dveo

“I certainly would not want to be married to somebody that can’t win championships. If you’re sacrificing time away from my family and myself for the benefit of winning championships, then winning a championship should happen every single year.”
    I hear that nessa.

No it ain’t just you boo she a Bolddigger….yeah I said Bold-digger cause she bold enough to say tht she is a golddigger..Kobe just as dumb as the rest of them. She don’t need a nanny cause she keeping it in the family, her peoples hep her with te kids, That’s how She was raised. She divorced Kobe to secure her money, cause she was raised LIKE that too…Get out mija and get your money..you cn alays go back to him mija, and then you can probo-bly get a new contract…yeah that’s how she was rised. I hope Kobe get whatever he has coming to hm, with rings whtever an with getting suckered too! May they have a good life.

  • IJS

First let me just say that when you do an interview or put yourself in the public eye you open yourself up to crticism comments and opinions. My opinon is that she comes off as arrogant and callous and if those were her direct quotes she needs to go back to school because she sounds noneducated.

    • Kenedy

She was doing good…until she did this interview….i actually really respected her for keeping quiet &not letting anyone all up in her business..smh

      • Kenedy

        * & not*

  • SheShe706

She has been with Kobe, since she was 17, and most basketball wives, and girlfriends, can’t even say that! They have two kids together, and she stays home and take care of those kids, while he get’s to travel around the world, and this country, to train and work, so yeah he better be trying to win a championship ring. Raising kids is a job within it’s self, and I understand because I am a Mother, and my Mother was a military wife, and she had all five of us with her all the time, while my Dad’s job, had him out in the field at months at a time.

    • MLS2698

Code word for: I have been with him since I was 17, and don’t know how I could make it any other way, so I’ll just sit here and hope he doesn’t cheat because I really like this life and being a baller’s wife who is allowed access that even other wives don’t get; i’m like the Queen of basketball wives.

  • colliz

The only thing that interview did was to confirm what everybody has been speculating about her all along. Why brag about the fact that you’re the only NBA wife that goes into the tunnell? Sounds a little pompous to me; and she doesn’t sound very bright either, not articulate at all. If you have the nerve to brag at least give a proper interview.

    • MLS2698

She is allowed in the team tunnel, and Kobe is allowed into other woman’s tunnel.

  • KayMcK

Forrest Gump could have did a better interview than that…

  • Na Na

It seems like yall are reaching. Normal interview….nothing salacious.

    If the price is right….

  • JaneDoe

I mean in her defense I would feel the same. Those players are on the road for a reason and its to get that ring.. She is a mother and a caretaker for the family. Why souldn’t she feel that way…

  • She Speaks

She doesn’t like the limelight…yet she was in that Eastsidaz video.
    Puh-leeze!

  • http://www.facebook.com/christy.taylorjones Christy Taylor-Jones

I don’t see anything in that article that would classify her as a gold digger. She is just saying if you have to be away from the family, then you should be winning championships or coming close to it. Kobe seems like he spends a lot of time working on his craft, so she is saying the result should be a championship. You can’t have the best of both worlds, if u put alot of hours in at work, you will neglect your family, if you spend a lot of time with your family, then your work gets neglected. So she is willing to spend less time with him because she see the work is paying off, 5 championships.

    • MLS2698

It’s a team, and her husband can’t win a game on his own. It does sound like she is saying she wouldn’t be married to a non-champion; she snatched him up with the quickness, and is holding on tighter than the saber-tooth tiger in the opening credits of the ” Flintstones” cartoon.

  • Jayy Bird

Kobe was probably cheating on her with a blonde bimbo at the very moment she did this mini interview

  • http://twitter.com/MsRedboneBrite Tee Elyse

It seems like folks just wanna dig for drama when it comes to this woman… I don’t think she meant it like “I’m only married to Kobe because he wins championships”, but more so along the lines of, if he’s going to be spending so much time away from home, it better be for a good reason. You better be winning something if you always “shooting in the gym”. Everybody knows that Kobe is a BEAST, and these two have been together since she was in high school. I’m not saying that makes her exempt from being a gold digger, but it just seems like Vanessa can’t win in the court of public opinion… like EVER!

Now, let’s see how many thumbs down I get for stating my opinion!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/christy.taylorjones Christy Taylor-Jones

      totally agree

    • Darcampb

I couldn’t agree more. They need to leave this woman alone and get some business

    • realadulttalk

That’s what I got from it too.

    • http://twitter.com/msmochamoney Ms. Mocha Money

Agreed! That title is completely misleading

    • Kayo

I agree. I think people will do anything to paint Vanessa as the woman who they want her to be just so they can attack her.

    • Emily

      agreed!

  • CA Pullen

Wow. If a black woman would have made that comment, she would automatically be classified as a gold digger. It is in only black women are gold diggers. They come in all races. They just get more money that the black girls do LOL!

  • Hello_Kitty81

Yeah until her Championship NBA baller husband cheats on her again, then she be all mad and s**t! Wonder what men she was into before Kobe?!

    • Kayo

She has been with him since she was 17-years-old, so I can’t imagine that she has had many relationships before then.

    • http://twitter.com/MsRedboneBrite Tee Elyse

High school boys because she and Kobe have been married since she graduated @ 18

  • RJA

    Must be nice
