Don’t make me leave this stage!

Last month I had the pleasure of attending the Essence Music Festival and Aretha Franklin just so happened to be one of the closing acts. Naturally, everyone was geeked at the chance to watch a living legend. Aretha was awesome and at times unexpected. Towards the end of her set, she sang “Bridge over Troubled Water” in honor of Whitney Houston. As she was playing the piano solo, she leaned into the microphone and asked…whoever to please turn the air conditioning off. I’m not making this up. Truth be told it was freezing in the arena. When her request was not met, she leaned into the mic again and said, “Please turn the air conditioning off on the stage before I have to leave it.” You know you’ve made it, when you can ask people to turn off the air in an arena.

Ms. Franklin was wearing a bunch of revealing outfits with her girls out and people were talking bout her clothes and she said “when u become a queen u can wear what u wanna wear.”
She also had a misunderstanding during the passing of Whitney Houston. Ms. Franklin made a statement about being careful how to bring up kids and the Houston family, got a lil sensitive about the statement, which led Ms. Franklin to be a no show for the funeral. obviously she didn’t tell anyone she wasn’t coming, cause they still announced her name during funeral.
Aretha Franklin is a treasure, she is humorous and talented and there will never be another one like her, and when i was on youtube, i saw some old performances of her and i could see Halle Berry playing her. Aretha Franklin had a small figure and a short cute haircute. Halle saying she could not do it, cause her singing ability, she played Dorothy Dandridge who was a singer/actress.
on youtube, check out Aretha singing No, No I’m not losing you.

How about a positive diva moment when she stepped up at the Grammys and sang Nessum Dorma (from an opera) at the last minute?
And a not so positive diva moment – my aunt and uncle went to see her in concert a couple of years ago. The tickets said there would be no intermission. Why did Miss Franklin make her own intermission and sip a cup of tea ON STAGE? People didn’t know whether they should get their own beverages or stay in their seats. Aretha was completely composed and acted like it was normal to expect an entire audience watch you sip a cup of tea.

Helloooo!!!!!! What about hen she got on Beyonce about calling Tina Turner the “queen”?? I thought that would be like the number 1 thing on this list. Only a diva would do that!! Lol

    • iReezy

Lol I was thinking the same thing!

How about when she went after Beyonce for proclaiming herself the queen or something to that nature and Aretha quickly brought that whole thing back into perspective saying “there is only one queen and that is me”….Loves it!

YESSSS!!!! I was at Essence Fest too & thatwasone of the most memorable moments of my weekend there. I was cracking up but I understand; It’s difficult to sing with that cold air blasting in your face and on your chest. She did great though!!

    Well, she is the Queen..

Ya’ll missed a whole LOT of her diva moments. Imma need for MN to go back and research her, like she told Kathie Lee. When I lived in Detroit, her antics where legendary, like her refusal to pay for restaurant tabs. She believes she’s entitled to free meals, hotel rooms, and other amenities because she is the Queen of Soul. Ya’ll better ask somebody about Ree-Ree.

    • Alexa

Refusing to pay for restaurant tabs? That’s ridiculous. Aretha is a legend and I respect her talent but her attitude stinks sometimes. Some of these celebs think they’re God.

yeah, I could see that happening. They could dine at a restaurant, and not want to pay thinking the establishment was graced by their presence, and should be happy to say Aretha Franklin dined there. Boom! free meal. Not! Pay yo bills!
