Is it ever appropriate to call someone’s baby “ugly”? I’m going to go with NO, but apparently that memo hasn’t reached the masses and Tia Mowry is the latest celebrity mama to deal with insults hurled at her child.
Tia hasn’t been shy about showing her son, Cree Hardrict, off to the world. The one-year-old has appeared on his famous mom’s reality show “Tia & Tamera” as well as been photographed with his mom on several occasions. Tia is a proud mother who loves to show off her baby. She posts her own pictures on social media networks and the paparazzi also snags shots at every chance they get. Some of those pictures are posted online and have drawn some nasty comments.
If you’ve been hanging around the comment section on various web pages you may have heard harsh words uttered [about Tia Mowry's baby].
“Wow that baby is ugly. What the hell happened,” turned up on one site. “Both parents are attractive. I just don’t get it.”
“You know I’m right, that baby is ugly,” wrote another commenter on [one site] responding to those who insisted otherwise. “That’s why you’re all hyped up about it. Say what you want and don’t act like ugly babies don’t exist. It is what it is. Don’t be at mad me. And just b/c I said the baby was ugly, it doesn’t mean he’ll always be that way. Who knows, maybe the kid will eventually grow into his head.”
Those comments didn’t go unnoticed by Tia herself and she responded on her Facebook page: “It’s disgusting that some focus on looks. I brought a beautiful child into this world.”
She’s right that is disgusting. Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon. When Beyonce finally unwrapped her seventh-month old baby while out on a shopping trip, negative comments abounded. Though it’s highly likely that Beyonce heard about the vitriol directed toward her baby, she didn’t respond. She did, however, refrain from showing Blue Ivy’s face in the family photos she recently posted on Tumblr. Whether that was coincidence or her passive response to criticism is unclear considering that the picture circulated a few weeks ago was a paparazzi photo and not one she published on her own.
Of course, Tia and Beyonce aren’t the only mothers who have had to deal with “your baby is ugly” comments. Other mothers, both celebrities and non have also been blindsided by hateful insults from unscrupulous people.
Some would say that these moms shouldn’t put their babies out there to be criticized for their looks, but I would say that no one should be criticizing a baby’s looks anyway. If there is ever a time when “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all” applies, it’s when it comes to someone’s baby — even when that “someone” is a celebrity and thus you feel entitled to critique every aspect of her life.
It’s not about taking sides on whether or not you believe that “every baby is cute” either. Who cares? Sometimes we don’t need to “keep it real” or “just be honest” because the real, honest truth is, no one should have the audacity to negatively comment on a baby’s looks — out loud or online.
