Bajan, Baby! 10 Of Our Favorite Celebrities of Barbadian Descent (And A Few Random Surprises…)

August 9th, 2012 - By Victoria Uwumarogie

Another day, another opportunity to be nosey and find out which stars have ties/roots/connections to the Caribbean. This time though, we’re professing our love for some of our favorite Bajan stars, even if we didn’t know half of them were of Barbadian descent in the first place…Either way, enjoy!

Stacey Dash

I know what you’re thinking. Stacey Dash is clearly a mix of a lot of things, but the actress and even singer (random) is repping Barbados. Not necessarily in the public…but you get what I mean. Born in the Bronx, she’s the child of a Bajan father and a Mexican and Native American mother (Aztec and Blackfoot Native American). Definitely an interesting mix culturally, but then again, she’s an interesting lady.

  • KaliIce

Um I’m creole How come I didn’t know i was Jewish??? She just want to be everything that something else will be some kind of Asian decent in a couple of years. And though she is pretty she does not look exotic.

    • thesashabarcellyia

lol yes megan comes up with a new decent every day yea shes cute but exotic? no she just looks like a regular carmel complexion black girl

      • Soulsis

“She just looks like a regular carmel complexion black girl,” which is just as beautiful as “exotic!” If she believed this there would be no need to play down her “blackness.”

  • Deedee_404

Ms. Dash is the only incorrect person on this list. San Fernando, Trinidad, not Barbados

  • j r

You forget Amber Rose and Wendy Williams

    • jrzsfnst609

Amber Rose is from West Africa. Cape Verde

  • Kimberley

LOL @ Church Christ, that is not the name; my parish is called Christ Church Madame Noire

  • Suchalady

Keep up these stories on the islands! Grenada next :)

  • karel

Yawl wrong about Gwen, she was on that show ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’, where celebrities trace their roots. One of her maternal ancestors was poor white and worked on the island, but left because their were hardly any white men on the island to marry, and cheap black labor left them jobless.

  • Glady

I just want to know how “Jewish and African” =Creole?

    • Mina B.

Oh god! I was wondering the same thing!!!. LMAO

      • Vanz

In the caribbean, we refer to creole as any mixture of ethnicity such as african and european… there are many diff definitions of creole but this one best suits her context.

  • Candacey Doris

Not surprised about Gwyneth Paltrow at all. No matter what race you think you are, if your family has been in the Americas for longer than 2 generations they’re there. Black People. Luring in your family tree. Lol.

    • Qtv

But her family from Barbados was white..

      • Candacey Doris

Not necessarily. Just cause you look it, doesn’t mean someone didn’t get down at one point.

        • KamJos

Bajan whites are a distinct group in Barbados. They don’t marry out and even have married relatives to keep their whiteness.

          • Candacey Doris

Marriage and getting down are two different things. Trust me when i say that a fair amount of sleeping around goes on.

    • autumnbreeze

She is White. It’s called slavery! Her ancestors brought slaves to the bajan island. That’s how she has bajan history.

      • ROSE-TINTED GLASSES

Like many, I see you have overlooked the point that was made that her Grandmother (or whoever) was a poor white. Yes Europeans/Caucasians/Whites enslaved Africans/Blacks and brought them to the Caribbean, but they also brought indentured labour, for example, Irish indentured servants (Caucasians/Whites) = poor. And, yes, many of the poor Whites in these situations, because of racism in those times, only married other Whites (even so far as to marry cousins). Caribbean history is much broader than just the enslavement of Africans/Blacks. We didn’t become a melting pot of people(s) and cultures overnight… So it is MORE THAN POSSIBLE to be white and be of Caribbean descent.

  • Chanda

So what descent is Lenny Kravitz and his mother, Roxie? I could have sworn they where of Bajan descent? They’re definately Carribean. As far as Gwyneth, can’t say I’m that surprised some “white” celebs aren’t as lily white as you think.

    • http://twitter.com/MsRedboneBrite Tee Elyse

Right! I was shocked to learn that Kelsey Grammer (Frasier) was from the Virgin Islands!

      • status quo

Which Virgin Islands? U.S. or British?

        • http://twitter.com/MsRedboneBrite Tee Elyse

          The US, I believe

    • Likklebit

Barbados has a lot of lily white natives, so I guess Gwyneth’s grandparents were one of them.

    • beautyishername

Lenny Kravitz is of Bahamian descent

      • Kim

Yup he is. He’s always over here in eleuthra.. its a nice place to be :)

  • Treacle234

Caribbean people ain’t cheap. When was the last time you saw a cheap Dominican or Puerto Rican…hump!

    • Deedee_404

The last time I took a trip to East NY in Brooklyn

      • Treacle234

Jewish people are know for their cheapness. LLCool J needs to sit down with that mess. There are cheap people of every nationality.

      • Treacle234

  • Trisha_B

I knew Gwynth had a lil something something in her lmao
    LL cool j, beautiful!
Rihanna just signed a 3 yr contract to be the face/attract tourism to Barbados. I love her accent & i hope she never looses it lol

    • Candacey Doris

Isn’t he? Every time i see him i think what a lucky woman his wife is.

    • Huh?

Just because Gwyneth’s family was from Barbados doesn’t mean she’s NOT white! Lol
There are white folks over there too. So that lil something something in her is still white! Lol

      • Trisha_B

huh? :/ I’m aware she’s still white even tho she got Bajan in her family. I’m talking about her mannerisms. Seems like she still got culture in her.
I know there are white people in the West Indies/Caribbean. My family is from Jamaica & my mom talks about her white & Asian classmates she had growing up. & the Asian people who had shops in her town. But over there, your jamaican. Whether your black, white, Asian, indian. You eat the same food, enjoy the same music, & are of 1 culture. Which gets passed down generation to generation, even if you leave the island. I’m sure the Bajans are the same way.

        • Deedee_404

She partially grew up outside the US with a mother that was an accomplished actress and a director father. The constant travel with them likely plays a bigger part in her cultured background than a grandmother who left BIM at 18

      • Deedee_404

Exactly…plantations in the Caribbean were run by people with the same skin tone as the ones here in the States

  • tdot

You guys should do one with people of Jamaican descent.

    • Chanda

They have months ago. You’ll have to look that one up.

  • Sugarfoot

    Lamman! Huneeeeeee lol

  • TRUTH IS

All surprizing except Rihanna. World and country knows she is from BIM; and her accent cant hide
