Sherman Hemsley’s Cause of Death Revealed

When Sherman Hemsley passed away late last month, his death was a shock to everyone. Though “The Jefferson’s” actor had been somewhat out of the spotlight for a while, his sudden passing at 74 seemed odd given no one was aware of any health complications. The El Paso, Texas, resident did in fact have them though, as TMZ reports he was suffering from lung cancer.

 ”According to the Postmortem Report, obtained by TMZ, the primary cause of death is listed as “superior vena cava syndrome” — a complication resulting from a mass on Sherman’s lung.

“According to the report, Sherman had been advised to get chemo and radiation therapy before he succumbed to his illness. It’s unclear if Sherman was a smoker.”

As we mentioned when Sherman passed July 24, he had no wife or children and it doesn’t appear any other relatives released a statement on his passing. His obituary in both the LA Times and New York Times noted “Information on survivors was not immediately available.”

Perhaps Sherman decided not to endure the pain of chemo and embrace death rather than try to sustain his life battling this disease.

    Maybe I’d feel differently if faced with the decision, but I think that I would prefer not racking up all those medical expenses either. My kids are grown and on their own, so I wouldn’t have to try to survive for the sake of dependents.

    So sad, at least he’s at peace. Plus my aunt who died from breast cancer 5 years ago didn’t want to go through chemo either because of financial issues, she rather had the money spent on her 3 kids than paying for all those medical bills and still not cured.

    That was brave of him not to let the chemo tear his body down, I dont blame him, leave here with all those ridiculous bills and still not cured, a brave step.

    Whatever the cause of his death, hopefully he is experiencing a peace in death that is impossible in life.

    So sad he’s gone he was so funny! In all honesty are body is not made for that radiation even though there has been survival stories but a lot of suffering along the way with chemo etc.. If it was up to me i would rather die naturally then endure that pain. R.I.P.

      I watched my mother suffer going through chemo & she even got third degree burns from radiation. It’s definitely not an easy decision to make, but by the grace of God, she pulled through and has been in remission for close to seven years!

        Thank God she made it through the process! GOD was her shield and by his mercy and grace she’s better! She did not lose the fight because of GOD and she won the battle. Keep smiling because GOD got the last word!
