Somebody Tell Drake: Aaliyah’s Brother Says Her Family Doesn’t Support A Posthumous Album

If a new Aaliyah album is released, it will be without her immediate family’s blessing.

As Necole Bitchie reported:

Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad, hopped on her Facebook page yesterday and claimed there is no Aaliyah album in the works that is endorsed by her family.

No Aaliyah Album

That’s confusing since her label’s logo (ran by her uncle Barry Hankerson) was included on the official artwork that was released. That track was definitely endorsed by the label. This could have all been Rashad’s way of saying that the project (which may be in production) is not supported by her immediate family.

When news of a potential album executive produced by Drake surfaced, Timbaland blasted the project saying:

I know they trying to drop some Aaliyah records, but if he do it, it should be with me and Missy. The proper way for him to do that would be for me, him and Missy to be all on the record. But to put it on his record, would just not be right.

Now, XXL magazine is saying that Timbaland is on board and producing at least two new songs. They also say that the bulk of the production will be handled by Drake’s frequent collaborator Noah “40″ Shebib.

So, it looks like the album may be a “go” despite her family’s protests. As for a biopic on his sister’s life? Rashad is against that too. Necole Bitchie goes on to say:

On her facebook, Aaliyah’s brother also shut down rumors of a biopic in production by first posing the question, ‘Biopic Yes or No?’ and then posting, “No female I’ve seen can play my sister.” -Rashad

This potential Aaliyah movie has been talked about for years. Meagan Good, Destiny Lightsy and Keisha Chante have all discussed playing Aaliyah. Rumor had it that Keisha Chante (Drake’s ex-girlfriend) was ultimately chosen to play the late singer and Dreamgirls director, Bill Condon, was going to direct the film.

The film was reportedly stalled because the family wasn’t on board back then…and it sounds as though they’re not on board now either. A few months ago, Keisha said in an interview that Aaliyah’s family is still mourning her loss and they aren’t ready to share her story and create a film.

Though many of us would like to see it, it’s completely understandable for her family to be against a movie about her life. Who would want want someone digging around in their daughter or sister’s past trying to find dirt to expose in a movie? Besides that, you never know how you’re going to be portrayed. It would likely be the same for an Aaliyah flick. Still, it seems that everyone involved would be interested in ultimately preserving her memory and celebrating her life.

They came out with a movie about Notorious B.I.G twelve years after his untimely death and his family was heavily involved. This year happens to be the 11th anniversary of Aaliyah’s passing. Maybe her family will have a change of heart and decide to get behind a biopic soon? It’s not likely.

What do you think? Would you like to hear a new Aaliyah album or a see a movie about her life?

Her family was very private about her when she was alive, sending her away trying to cover up the RKelly scandal, etc… I can’t see them allowing a movie to be made about her, cuz you know they have to put the R Kelly part in the film because he was a big part of getting her started! On top of all that, I’m sure they are going to recreate the fatal crash, and her family not going to go for that. Money not everything to some people, you will see a Michael Jackson, Conrad Murray murder movie before an Aaliyah biopic.

  • Allyce

It’s no different than Dr. Dre’s and the general public’s obsession with Tupac. The hologram was creepy.

  • Miss_Racquel

I think a Biopic of Aaliyah will be a great way to preserve her memory if they do it right. The funds earned from the movie can go to her charity so that it wouldn’t be like people are trying to still make money off of her. Selena’s movie is still a fav of mine and dear to my heart it was done classy and her her own family was involved it made her fans and people who didn’t even know Selena love her even more! With the notorious B.I.G. movie was also another fav of mine. So i think a movie will be great as long as the family gives their support and be involved, they should really think it through for her fans who would still like to hold on to her memory. It will never be easy to find someone to play her but with help from the family it can work out!

  • Socialite Hair Inc

i personally think JOY BRYANT could play her. Keisha Chante?? um no.. OAN: I love Aaliyah & always have but i think if her families say no than they shouldnt do it. Im sure somewhere down the road theyll allow her legacy, music & spirit to liveon for future generations. Until then blast some old Aaliyah tunes & relax.

Drake is just a little too sick for me…Im all about appreciating the ones who inspired us the most, and Aaliyah was defiantly an inspiration to us all. Drake is a little over board don’t you think? he has either her named tattooed on him or a portrait i cant remember, and he always shooting her out like they used to date. Stop, seriously chill out. I don’t blame Rashad (with his gorgeous self) or the family for not wanting to be apart with a movie or album. movies don’t always bring out the good until the end. Plus no actress is no where good/decent/perfect enough to portray Aaliyah…ijs let her rest in peace.

  • Kay

Drake was like 5 when Aaliyah died so his interest in her is disturbing as hell. For some reason I picture his room plasters with pictures of her. And I agree they should let her rest no posthumous albums or biopic films. It’s been 11 years so why do they want to make an Album now?

    • MisterBig

I believe you have that wrong. Drake would have been either 15 or 16 yrs. old when Aaliyah died. With that said, I also agree that they should let her and her family rest in peace.

      • Kay

The age thing was a joke…

        • MisterBig

Not really clear from your original post but ok…

          • Kay

            Sarcasm..

  • RAYA

How are you gonna get “new music” from a dead person? Let her family grieve for however it takes, Dear Drake and all thoae involved, please leave Aaliyah legacy alone we don’t want Creepy Drake tarnishing her sound with his wack flow & style.
    Thank you.

Can they just let it go already. They need to just seriously let this woman rest in peace. That song by Drake was horrible. And the whole movie idea needs to canned and shelved as well. There’s no sense in opening cans of worms that could be painful and embarassing for her family.

  • serene

Did you really have to include gay Rashad…headlines is not about her gay brother..@c97ca8177a92c01db3926cc1db294bd9:disqus

  • Hello_Kitty81

I don’t blame her family for not wanting a posthumous album, let her RIP.

I have always felt the family was a lil off base and rashad her brother needs to sit down. People appreciate and miss aaliyah they could use the money to profit her foundation or donate it to her old arts highschool. I have never felt the family allowed other artist and fans that appreciate her celebrate her. Ain’t nobody checkin for gay rashad.

    • jstdngme

how are you as an outsider going to make opinions about the mindset of family? Maybe, Aaliyah was more to them than money so it’s not a factor. Also as her immefiate family and the people who knew her best maybe they know that she didn’t want throwaway tracks used to make “new music”.. But hey that’s JMO.

    • Vince

Maybe you should be quiet with all of your uninformed information and a personal attack on her brother’s sexuality is a non-issue.

  • Baddvixentype

aaliyah movie? im sorry but she wasnt in the publics eye long enough to make a film on. what is it gonna be about….that r.kelly situation…again! NEXT!

  • Lady85

I love Aaliyah, let her rest with the angles and keep her legacy in tact. that Biggie movie had his family’s involvment but it didn’t make him look too good (IMO)

    • Lady85

      *correction- “Angels” damn spell-check

    • Kenedy

I know!!! I had no idea that Biggie did Lil Kim & Faith dirty like that…..& his daughter & first baby moms

  • Merriegirl

This sad. Its like everyone is reaching try to control some part of her legacy. I would buy an Aaliyah album and it think for the most part singers would like their for their music to live on after their death to reach new generations. Her family is a little sketchy to me. I think they put their needs ahead of what she would have wanted. & I think that her brother response of no one can play my sister is foolish. No one will ever be able to be Aaliyah. She’s one of kind. & good biopic’s are not meant to replace the person their suppose to honor their memory. Thats what good actresses do. & I think my him responding like that speaks to his own issues.

  • Cherie

I think the family is still mourning , in addition to irritating celebrities like Drake who get her image tattoo on them and want to do music collabs with her 10+ year old audio bits and if she was still in the flesh, we know it probably would not have occurred. Its disturbing that someone that was not a close friend/ or family member wants to do that much with her memory and likeness, when her own people ( friends and family) have not done anything yet.

Also, it would and will be pretty difficult to find someone who could resemble her ( physical resemblance, singing ability, style and personality) enough to play her in a movie

  • KJ23

Drake’s interest in Aaliyah is starting to get a little disturbing.

    • Machelle Kwan

Seriously disturbing. Is he even old enough to know her songs?

    • Hello_Kitty81

And I thought my older cousin’s obsession with Aaliyah was worse. He even painted a mural of her on his bedroom wall and he’s a painter.

    • realadulttalk

I thought the same thing when I heard about this song.

    • ebonyhud

I think that his fandom is perceived to be disturbing because he is famous. Every celeb has screaming/crying/devoted fans that get tattoos and pay hundreds to be in the same vicinity of their fave. I really think he thinks its a good idea lol. With that being said, he needs to put in concideration her family’s wishes. I have not liked what I’ve heard so far about the project.

  • Rasharne

I find it quite disgusting that the likes of Drake are trying to make money off a dead woman he’s never even met. If her family are against it let it go, this is someone’s daughter and much bigger than your next pay cheque

  • nope

not interested in an aaliyah movie at all
