Oprah Checks Twitter Follower Who Questions Her Loyalty To The Black Community

It’s no secret Oprah is considered to not have much interest in helping the African American community excel, building a media empire largely based on content that appeals to white suburban mothers. But when a Twitter follower tried to call her out on that yesterday evening, the queen of daytime talk was not having it. Here’s how the convo went:

@awalkdatalk  didn’t back down after Oprah flipped the script on him. He charged back, saying ”@Oprah but its millions of us n everybody isnt classified as african americans. Notice I said ghettos,” and then went on to send a slew of tweets about all he thinks the media mogul isn’t doing for the less fortunate.

@Oprah@Oprah_World just cuz Jay-z came on ur show doesnt mean u helping the hood

All that money, create sum jobs rignt here home in America b4 u spread da wealth with others. #takecarehome1st

Still waiting for an answer not statements this isnt a campaign ad commercial.

@Oprah@Oprah_World The world and the ghetto’s want to know. We waitin.

Still not one person in America can name one hood, public housing, block, ghetto. #StillWaitinOprah

Its not just her its everybody “in position”

We didnt ask @Oprah@OprahWinfreyBiz@Oprah_World for anything, just a question. And the ghetto still got nothing. Goodnight America

As the tweets show, Oprah had nothing else to say after she spoke on sending black men to college. I imagine @awalkdatalk, like a lot of black America, is still waiting on a response or action—and probably will be for a good while.

What do you think about this follower questioning Oprah and the response she gave?

Black people tend to bash the ones who made it not realizing how much good they do under raps. Yea, Oprah appeals to a white population with alot of her material, but I am a black woman who watches her faithfully, and the subjects she chooses are universal. Besides, when you think about the fact that blacks make up a small percentage of the American population, it only makes good business to appeal to a broader population. I graduated from her Alma Mater, and she gave that school millions of dollars, which have been dwindled away, in addition to an entire building equippd with classrooms an art gallery, and an auditorium. Oh not to mention the damn internet email system we snubbe her for in place of Dell. We as blacks waist good opportunities. So leave that woman along. She paid her damn dues.

Tha tman is an idiot because I definitely know MANY Oprah scholars who had there entire boarding school education 100% funded by Oprah Winfrey and some of them were from the straight up ghetto. (I hate that term and don’t even wanna jusitfy that fool but I know it would be a ghetto that live sup to his stupid standards” SO yeah I’m gonna need that fool to check his facts before he starts going in. ** Woah I just looked at the comments and you fools are just as bad as him blacks will continue to be a permanent underclass with this blame mentality”

This kid got his 15minutes of fame, now let us move on to something else.

This is ridiculous, why is it appropriate for one person to be held accountable for a whole community? Oprah came from humble beginnings just like many of us, and rose up with hard work and talent. She has given back and done so in highly visible ways and in very discrete ways. It sickens me that versus seeing the beauty of what she has already done, many just want more. How much can one give? Too many folks are looking for a hand out, versus a hand up. Oprah isn’t the one keeping others down, so why hold her responsible? I personally think dude wanted some shine and he’s received just that.

Let’s work on our love for eachother, knowledge and progress FIRST.

Oprah has given to Hurricane Katrina victims in the ghetto. She has given to Haiti after the Earthquake which is the ghetto. She’s also given to my own city of Newark, NJ which is the ghetto. In Newark, she’s built several buildings that house women who are former drug and alcohol abusers and their children.

But … it’s HER money. Am I missing something? Goodbye, sir.

Oprah actually donated about $50,000 to my high school band to buy instruments. Even featured some of the students on her show. Oh, I forgot to mention my high school is based in South Central Los Angeles.
