Confessions Of A Christian Nation: The Real Reason We Continue To Ask If Pres. Obama Is A Muslim

Ever since the first anonymous email circulated claiming he was a Muslim, President Obama has maintained that he is a Christian. In fact, he told Christianity Today “I believe in the redemptive death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.”

That widely-publicized interview and his repeating of that same statement on several occasions did little to sway those that refused to believe he isn’t a Muslim. In fact, according to The Huffington Post that erroneous belief continues to this day:

Three and a half years into the presidency of Barack Obama, 17 percent of registered voters still believe that he is a Muslim despite the fact that he is a Christian, according to a poll released Thursday by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life. Forty-nine percent correctly identified that he is a Christian, while 31 percent of respondents said they did not know.

Of course it would be easy to dismiss 17 percent of people in this country as bonafide idiots. However, the fact that a significant percentage of people believe President Obama is a Muslim says more about what we believe about religion and less about what religion he believes.

Roughly 80 percent of people in this country call themselves Christians. Christianity is an easy religion to assume considering that the most popular aspect of its message is love, mercy and grace. More accurately, Christianity is one of the easiest religions to fake. Why? Because there are no hard and fast “rules”. Sure we have a Bible that we can base our actions on, but many have dismissed the Bible as not being absolute truth and instead being up to individual interpretations. Therefore, should someone point out un-Christian behavior such as fornication, alcoholism, or some other unapologetic, deliberate and consistent sinful lifestyle choice, that person will undoubtedly be hit with the “only God can judge me” Tupac verse that people believe is in the Bible. A person can be having sex with every man she meets and still describe herself as “a God fearing woman” in her Twitter bio. Heck, James Holmes goes on a mass killing spree and people back in his hometown in California were calling him “Christian”. Some of the most hate-mongering people on the far-right claim to be Christian despite spouting hateful, racist rhetoric. This country as a whole was built on the backs of slaves, but don’t you dare say those Founding Fathers weren’t Christians. Plenty of people are out here claiming to be Christians yet do not believe in Heaven; the omnipresence of God; the virgin birth, crucifixion and subsequent resurrection of Jesus; the infilling of the Holy Spirit; the pursuit of holiness; the infallible Word of God; or Hell. They don’t look, act, or talk Christian, but who are we to say they aren’t Christians?

The Islamic faith, on the other hand, is not like that at all. The reason why people think President Obama can drink beer, eat pork, ignore Ramadan, never step foot in a mosque (at least not in the past three years), claim Christianity, say he is not a Muslim and yet people still believe he is a Muslim is because we have no concept of what it means to truly believe in and practice our religion. So many people in this country claim to be Christian yet live blatantly un-Christian lifestyles, so we automatically believe other religions tolerate the same behavior. In fact, when someone does do or say something that is contrary to popular culture but keeps with their Christianity, we’re shocked and ready to protest. As Wajahat Ali (who is a Muslim) pointed out in 2008: “We would have to disavow common sense, history, evidence and truth, and, instead, rely purely on hysteria and hearsay created out of conjecture…[to] conclusively prove Obama is a Muslim.”

But we know President Obama isn’t a Muslim. This report isn’t about that at all. Think about it: if President Obama said he were a Muslim tomorrow, there isn’t a single policy or act of his presidency that we could point to as evidence that he has been anything but a Democrat in office. Muslims would undoubtedly rebuke him as an “Apostate” and droves of people would be calling him a liar and pointing out any and all anti-Muslim practicing behavior.

Nobody who deserves to be living outside of the local insane asylum really believes Obama is a Muslim and, at this point, no thinking individual even cares because it has no bearing on his presidency whatsoever. This report and the resulting headlines are  simply a subtle reminder to the many Muslim-Americans in this country that they are still not welcome here. The mainstream media is using these types of stories to remind Muslim-Americans that our prejudice against them in this country will not dissipate and that relentless prejudice may in fact be the only thing that unites the rest of us.  Don’t believe me? Next time someone says they believe President Obama is a Muslim, ask them why it matters. This isn’t about President Obama at all. This is about our country’s persisting, shameless hatred of people born on American soil who happen to be Muslims. Cause after all, [insert the most sarcastic tone ever] we’re a “Christian” nation.

I think the author is self-righteously blind and completely misdiagnoses the problem. What a joke.

as far as the statement that there are no hard rules in Christianity, i disagree. the Bible is repleat with direction on how a true believer is suppose to live and conduct themselves. if one is not willing to submit to it, then they are not a Christian point blank. the article points out what the problem is without knowing it. several times the aurthor states that one can live contrary to the Bible (i.e. the Book which governs a Christians behavior) and yet CALL THEMSELVES a Christian. it isnt what they call themselves that makes them a Christian but its what the BIBLE says about their lifestyle that makes them Christian or sinner. i can call myself a doctor, lawyer, mechanic, etc. but its the submission to the discipline of those teachings that makes me one. until i do that, i am neither of them.

as far as whether the pres is a muslim or not speaks to the gullibility of the american public & their preference to be TOLD what to think as opposed to thinking for themselves. how is it possible for conservatives to try to bludgeon him with rev JEREMIAH WRIGHT & the president’s two DECADE membership in that CHURCH then turn around and call him a muslim? it should be obvious that its about discrediting him. they will use which ever issue the public is dumb enough to believe.

  • IllyPhilly

What would be wrong if he was? He’s not touching little boys, stealing money from the church, or tryna marry 14 yr olds.

“It is irrelevant whether Obama is a Christian or a Muslim as long as he governs like he is neither”.

‘Christian Nation’? What a joke! Everyone’s so quick to claim they’re Christian, but how many ‘Americans’ even know (or care) what that REALLY means? How many can say they’ve studied the Bible (**Notice the word, “STUDIED”) to understand what that even means — let only LIVE it? I’d go out on a limb to say, NOT VERY MANY!! Sorry, but going to church on just Mother’s Day and Easter won’t do it. One must bear witness AND be an example to non-believers, and work to do it DAILY! That IS what a TRUE Christian does, according to the Word. And that’s wholly exclusive to YOU doing what you KNOW is wrong, then saying “the Lord know my heart”, all the while condemning gays, adultery and everything else that keeps YOU comfortable. SMH. Say what u want, but most Muslims are genuine practitioners of their faith. Many, MANY Christians are frauds that pick and choose what they practice from the Bible, while THROWING AWAY the rest, then condemning everyone else. It’s blasphemy.

Maybe the Christians ur around! I’m sorry, but the bible speaks that us Christians are going to be the most hated, and it shows with ur comment! I’m proud to be Christian and I don’t act like I’m better than anyone! I’m not perfect but I have a great relationship with God, I don’t judge people or point the finger at them, if anything I pray for them! I don’t know what kind of Christians u know but maybe u should get out more and know that not all Christians are not judgmental! And many Christians are frauds? Wow, u must live in a box! Or maybe u need to stop going to that church if u feel that way about Christians! As far a condemning Gays, please thats all u got! They do a good job of condemning themselves! Ur talking about judging but aren’t u judging Christians? I’m just saying!

        I’m praying for you=) God bless=)

Whoooooo!!! THIS! THIS! THIS! It’s rare to find an article that expresses my deep inner thoughts in such an articulate manner. Especially the part about the christians’ lack of knowledge of their own faith and that tired line of “Only God can judge me”. Thank you! This is so well written, i have nothing else to say.

Why do pollsters even continue to ask this inane, idiotic question and why do we waste precious time debating it? Only bigots are clinging to the illusion that the president is a Muslim – they cannot blatantly express their hatred of his skin color so they hide behind this crap. Even if he were a Muslim so what?

The individuals who stole this land from Native Americans came here to avoid religious persecution, and subsequently find religious freedom. The Thieving Fathers believed that there should be a separation of Church and State – therefore president Obama’s religious beliefs has no relevance to his presidency. So please let us move on!

    • IllyPhilly

      Amen!! LOL

  • sabrina

i’m just gonna keep my mouth closed on this one because i’m sure no ones gonna like what i have to say :)

I thought everyone assumed he was a muslim based on his name..

    • IllyPhilly

YUP, and no matter what, if his name was Billy Jeffery Adams, this would not be an issue.

  • gracie

Am with you on that one. If only everyone practiced what they preach, that would never even be an issue.
