The First Annual Ghetto Angels Basketball Tournament was supposed to be an opportunity to celebrate the life of a young woman who was stabbed to death last year in the same area. But what started off as a regular game watched by a large group of residents from the Forrest Houses in the Bronx turned into a shootout in no time flat. The end result was two men wounded, and little Lloyd Morgan taking a bullet to the head. The 4-year-old was amongst other small children playing around the court, according the New York Daily News, when a man shot at a player on the court and the man shot back. The flurry of bullets went flying, as did most of the people who were watching the game. When the child’s mother went searching for him, she found Morgan on the ground, shot.
The scene, as described by a witness who spoke to the Daily News, was a chaotic one:
“People are all out and before you know it — it was Pop! Pop! Pop! People started running everywhere. They were screaming, a frightened scream. People were running, crossing the streets — not caring if cars were driving. They were scared.”
Sadly enough, according to New York’s CBS affiliate, this isn’t the first child that the victim’s father has lost. Lloyd Morgan, Sr. lost a newborn daughter when the mother of that child killed it, and police found the child’s body in a closet owned by her grandmother.
A rally is said to be taking place today on behalf of the young boy and to ask for a stop to the violence. And some are saying that because this shooting took place during a time where the NYPD was trying to slow up on its use of the controversial “Stop and frisk” method of patting down people “at random” (aka, only going after young men of color) on the streets, it’s all the more reason why the tactic is necessary. Not sure if I can say that I agree or not, especially when I think it’s dead wrong for it to be used on black and brown men solely, but I do know that it’s a damn shame that something like this had to happen at what was supposed to bring attention to senseless violence. Unfortunately, it brought more senseless violence and cost a 4-year-old his life. At just four, he had yet to do and see very much according to his mother, Shianne Norman: “So many gunshots and while this was going on, I was just looking for my baby. My son was 4 years old. He just turned 4 this May that just passed. He was going to school in September. He hasn’t gotten to live his life yet. He hasn’t gotten to do anything.”
Please keep this grieving family in your prayers.
