Lil Mama has rubbed a lot of people the wrong way since stepping into the public eye. Initially, people weren’t so sure about her declaration that her lip gloss was poppin’ and when she bum-rushed Alicia Keys and Jay-Z’s performance of “Empire State of Mind” at the MTV Music Awards a few years back, many saw that as the ultimate no-no. But one thing that shouldn’t be offensive about the 22-year-old New York rapper is her hair in its natural state, except for some black women it apparently is.
In a recent interview with LoveBrownSugar.com, Lil Mama talked about uploading the pic above of herself in May and the overwhelmingly negative backlash she received from black women. She told the site backstage at the Global Fusion Festival in Philadelphia this weekend:
“I posted the picture of my hair and people were like ‘Omg you look like a shocked slave!’ I didn’t get one comment from a white person about my hair. All of them came from the sisters that had these bullsh** helmut weaves looking like a fake a** Nicki Minaj. They don’t know who they are. And the people they’re looking to for guidance don’t know who they are either, which sucks.”
The backlash may speak to Lil Mama’s fan base considering the trend of natural hair acceptance that is spreading wildly among black women of all backgrounds, although we know there are many women who have a Wendy Williams perspective on natural hair and believe that it’s not fitting of certain occasions—or any for that matter. Asked whether she thought that mindset would ever change, Lil Mama said:
“I think you can change it — Michael Jackson said it best: Start with the man in the mirror. And being natural all your life and never converting to get a perm because you feel pressured shows your strength, not only as a woman but as an individual because that made you who you are. I feel like just going natural, I feel good about it, and I’m just trying to find different ways that I feel pretty, not the typical version of pretty….White. Excuse me….European influenced.”
Her hair isn’t the only part of Lil Mama that’s going natural, she’s also swore off acrylic nails after a horrible allergic reaction. The rapper said her fingers blistered and a formation in the shape of Africa appeared on her finger which she felt was a sign from God about needing to embrace a different type of lifestyle. God does work in mysterious ways…Check out Lil Mama’s whole interview here.
What do you think about the charge that black women are harsher about natural hair than other women?
