Years ago, movies for, by and about black people were coming out at a rapid rate. Some of them we all know and love because they were so amazing. But then there are some movies – both good and bad – that are considered “underground hits,” or cult classics, that many of us eventually saw at home and may (or may not) want to admit you’ve seen! Check it out and feel free to add your own!

LOW DOWN DIRTY SHAME IS ONE OF MY ABSOLUTE FAVS!I CAN WATCH IT EVERYDAY,AND STILL LAUGH AT THE SAME PARTS!I’M LAUGHING AS I TYPE THIS COMMENT:)

  • Kourtney

I would have put “The Wood”, “Best Man”, and “G” on the list. I watch them every chance I get.

  • Krusha

A Low Down Dirty Shame and BAPS were actually two fo my faves, as bad as BAPS was (My family saw that movie at the dollar show about 20 times). The best thing about Players Club?? Ronnie, a.k.a. the main villain, the bad b*tch of the club. Second best thing? Adele Givens playing the old-ass stripper…

  • Sunni

    No “Holiday Heart”?!?!

  • baddvixentype

i dont care what no one says B.A.P.S is still one of my favorites ahaha even with all the bad writing and editing. that movie always cracks me up, i can watch it back to back.

  • Grace

OMG, I loooved Juice. I watched that movie incessantly as a kid. I too hated Belly and ppl give me such a hard time about it! But let’s face it, the “acting” is shotty, and the plot was all over the place to say the least…

    • bluelove

Belly was horrible. I watched it and couldnt even remember what happened when it was over

  • Yeah

I like most of the movies on here like Juice, Baps but I think Friday should of been up there along with The Five Heartbeats and The Temptations.

I did not like – and could happily never see again ever – any of the movies on this list.

  • Sandy

    what about poetic justice

      Poetic Justice is horrid

  • TraceFace

    No Cooley High?!

  • uniquefashionista

Honestly, the first few movies, I never heard of them. I also remember reading that Halle Berry wanted to do B.A.P.S. because she had just gotten a divorce and wanted to do a movie that was totally the opposite of what she normally did. She said it was refreshing.
I wish the movie “G” would have made the list. Blair Underwood, Laz Alonso, etc.. (a lot of eye candy).

    • Yeah

Yes! I like that movie G. It was actually a pretty good movie.

  • Me

As a kid me an my sis would watch The last dragon over and over….Its an olddie but goodie!!!

  • .:*whitneyeclectic*:.

No mention of “The Five Heartbeats”? Color me stunned.

    • meee

Now that’s true – the Five Heartbeats was excellent! These other movies listed? Meh…terrible!

  • brit1908

Ummmm I think the movie “Friday” should have been the first movie inducted into the black classics. Im just saying!

    • Ki

I laugh every single time I watch !

  • Kim

I was expecting to see ‘Fresh’ and ‘The Wood’ on this list

    • Delores

Me too. And Crooklyn and The Inkwell.

  • IllyPhilly

What about State Property 1&2? Soul Plane-people really love that piece of crap.

    • baddvixentype

state property 1&2 is a good one to put on the list. Everyone i know seems to have seen it and loves it. I for one have never seen any. Tried but it was too much horrible acting. you know hoe those black BET movies are lol

      • IllyPhilly

        Yup! LOL

  • FromUR2UB

I expected to be familiar with most of the movies named, but have never heard of at least three of them. I think I’ve seen a part of ‘Player’s Club’ at someone else’s home, but have never seen it in its entirety. ‘ATL’ I saw recently on either TV One or BET; it was good enough that I didn’t change the channel. I like that can catch some of the more obscure black movies on those networks, since none of the other networks air them. The only thing is that they seem to run the same movies so frequently, like Cuba Gooding, Jr’s ‘Shadowbox’. I hate that movie, yet every time I turn around they’re running it. It seems that the more violent and gruesome a movie is, the more they run it.

    What about:
Uninvited Guest w/ Mekhi Phifer & Mari Morrow
Stranger Inside w/ Yolonda Ross, Medusa & Ella Joyce
Civil Brand w/ LisaRaye,N’Bushe Wright, DaBrat, Tichina Arnold, Monica Calhoun, Mos Def, MC Lyte, Lark Voorhies (looovvvvve this one)

    • Pizzaparty

  • Ay

    • mikey
