Jennifer Carroll Needs More People: Lt. Gov Denies Lesbian Scandal, ‘Black Women Who Look Like Me Aren’t Gay’

July 16, 2012  |

Yes, just let that statement marinate for a minute. Florida Lt. Governor Jennifer Carroll  is likely about to be in an even bigger mess than she’s already in after sticking her foot all the way in her mouth with her remark about what gay women look like.  The reason she made this comment is because she’s been caught in a “compromising position” with a top aide, Beatriz Ramos, inside her office, and so to deflect rumors of the lesbian scandal that is assumed to be brewing between the two, the 52-year-old made this statement, Tampa Bay’s 10 News reported:

“The problem is that when you have these accusations that come out, it’s not just one person you’re attacking,” Carroll said. “It’s an entire family. My husband doesn’t want to hear that. He knows the type of woman I am. I mean, my kids know the type of woman I am. For twenty-nine years – I’m the one that’s married for twenty-nine years. The accuser is the one that’s been single for a long time. So usually black women that look like me don’t engage in relationships like that.”

Anyone want to let us know the standard physical characteristics of a black lesbian? Yeah, she just dug herself in a much deeper hole with that one. On top of that suspect comment, it’s also highly comical that Carroll is using the accuser’s singleness to disprove her credibility, as if single women don’t have anything better to do but try to break up people’s marriages. Someone is making herself look more and more guilty.

A “compromising position” isn’t the only sticky situation Carroll and Ramos are said to have been caught in. In a court filing made late last week by the attorney representing the accuser, Carletha Cole (who was arrested last October on charges that she gave an illegally taped conversation with another Carroll aide to a newspaper reporter), a few other interesting tidbits arose. Cole also claimed Ramos was living at Carroll’s home and that she was ordered by Ramos to find adjoining hotel rooms for Carroll and Ramos when they traveled. Cole said she was also “scolded” by an agent from Carroll’s security team when she placed Ramos next door to Carroll when the lieutenant governor and her husband traveled to Puerto Rico last summer. The agent reportedly told her to not do it again but gave no explanation as to why.

According to Carroll, “That’s totally false and absurd,” and Cole—a grandmother and minister whose never had prior trouble with the law—is simply coming up with these allegations to get the pending felony charges against her dropped. That would be believable if Carroll weren’t so defensive in her denial of the allegations. Understandably, anyone facing a rumor as serious as that is going to try to prove their innocence strongly. However the manner in which she stated her case by saying she doesn’t look like a lesbian, reeks of the potential of a down-low sista, which brings up an interesting topic we never talk about. Men on the DL have remained a hot-button issue, but rarely, if ever, do we think about a woman getting married and carrying on the facade of a happy hetero relationship while masking her true sexual orientation. Today it would seem somewhat silly for a woman to do that given the widespread acceptance of homosexual lifestyles and even the greater acceptance of lesbian women as opposed to gay men. The political environment is much more conservative though and impartial to political figures in heterosexual marriages. When Carroll got married 29 years ago, that would have been true even more so, suggesting it’s not outside of the realm of possibility that she got married to further her career and supressed her true orientation. But that’s just speculation.

On top of Carroll’s weak argument against the potential for a lesbian relationship, Cole was allegedly given a polygraph test and a retired Florida law enforcement agent said when she was asked did she answer truthfully about “observing a sexually compromising position in the Capital,” she passed. I’m pretty sure Carroll’s resignation is being drafted as I type.

What do you think about Lt. Gov Carroll’s lesbian scandal defense and the idea of black women being on the DL?

  • Terri T

Actually she is right in that homosexuals are about ten percent of the population most women that look like her are not lesbians.

  • Erika P.

Talk about failing PR 101. Girl, bye.

  • Maybe she’s actually straight. I mean, people lie all the time, especially on politicians. I can see why someone would hold a grudge against her.

  • Ms. Spring

She is so predictable. People like her make me sick.

  • A.J.

What is up with Florida lately? It seems like they’re in the news for some ratchetness every week or so.

  • lady85

Her son Is FIONE!! (but that’s a different topic for a different day.) what she said was weak, dumb and narrow-minded, but truthfully, most women around her age say and think things like that. She’s a conservative Republican, perhaps that worked to appease her support base.

    • Zee

Yeah but her son is fin tho LOL

      • Lady85

no I meant “Fione”…he needs a level higher than just regular old “fine”…. :-p

    • Zee

      Fine* lol

  • Wait, what are gay black woman supposed to look like? She got caught eating box get over it..!

  • GeekMommaRants

Whoa, this woman reminds me of another republican woman, highly placed at that. Madame you remind me of her. LOL

  • HelenOfTroy

Funny how only supporting views get posted here. Dissenting views, however, are “moderated”. So much for transparency and diversity of opinion.

  • Nadine Johnson

See you all missed the point. When she said women “that look like her don’t engage in relationships like that” (out in the open relationships) – she meant trifling, lying, undercover, GOP women like her! Dumb and out of touch. Her husband is either her “beard” or filing for divorce as we speak! Get a clue lady.

  • Nisha

I posted on her FB page yesterday and as of today she has removed my post and blocked me from any other comments. Here is what I posted

‎”Usually black women who look like me don’t engage in relationships like that” — Florida Lieutenant Governor Jennifer Carroll response to accusations of a relationship with a female aide. I AM OFFENDED. My wife is better looking than you and most certainly engages in that type of relations with me… I really can’t believe that you as a female minority politician would allow that stereotype to leave your mouth. I swear the black community still thinks only ugly run down females are gay. Once again ashamed of the “leaders” of this state and the hate they embody.

I am also checking back for some type of apology/statement regarding your comment “Usually black women who look like me don’t engage in relationships like that”. I find it shocking that you are heading a panel reviewing the stand your ground law – a law now brought under criticism due in part to the actions of a certain someone based on stereotypes. Now here you are stereotyping yourself. Perhaps you are not the correct person for the job.

  • mimi

which compromising position i wanna know?

  • Kay

She got caught licking the box and her defense is… How many years she’s been married and her appearance? Lmao I can’t …

  • ChristinaItsruff Beingadiamond

I ain’t gone even sit up here and make it seem like I’ve ever seen a Lesbian look like her because I haven’t but I’m pretty sure they’re plenty out there! They either look like, Some Real Live Man, A low life overly promiscuous ran down Stripping Ratchet, or Ellen far as the never catch in a dress or a skirt look! All I know is Say It Ain’t So! Who just throws away 29yrs for fur?LOL I can’t take it I can’t take it I can’t take it!SMDH

  • They’re just trying to bring you down. No one seems to question the sexual orientation of Janet Napolitano and look at her and we can only imagine what’s going behind the Homeland Security (by the way, did you know that name came from the Nazi’s?) Sister change your look so you don’t look like a lesbian, a trans-mission or anything else close to a man. When in public office you can never be you because the true people who run this country don’t want it that way.

  • HelenOfTroy

As much as I disagree with Carroll’s statement, I think the analysis in this article is off. You ask: “Anyone want to let us know the standard physical characteristics of a black lesbian?” Context matters. As journalists, you should know that. I’m not by any means purporting to be in Carroll’s head but if you read everything she said prior to the final sentence about “black women that look like me” it seems pretty clear that she was not referring to physical features, but rather, to a social/demographic profile. That is, a married woman with children from a longstanding heterosexual marriage. As I said, I still don’t necessarily agree with her comments but I think the author was off, if not being inflammatory, with the “physical characteristics” spin.

  • sammi_lu

Uhh newsflash boo.. Black women who are gay look JUST like u! Hair,breasts,legs,eyes.. her statement was weaker than a Seagram’s wine cooler mixed with kool-aid!

    • GeekMommaRants

LMBAO— you are in the running for comment of the week!!

  • dumb post

get over it! y’all made it sound worse from the tweet, this was stupid what she said iwasn’t that bad.

    • HelenOfTroy

Amen. MN missed the mark with this one.

  • rosemary davis

Either way her image and reputation is runined and her marriage will always have a stained on it.There are many who are single (Don Lemon) some married are full fledge Lesbians and Homosexuals and their mates know nothing until something like this come out.So in my opinion there is no certain look as in Don Lemons case who would have ever thunk it but he is still a great you Don

  • realadulttalk

Look like her in what manner? Bad hair? Funny looking? Bad makeup. I’m lost by what she said!!!

  • unque43

OMG could she push her foot any further in her mouth. There are beautiful gay women in the world. Being single has nothing to do with being guy or not. The rooster that crows the loudest saying comes to mind. She sure is crowing loudly

    • Aja

She put both of her feet in her mouth. Where are her PR people? This is pathetic.

  • wth?

To be honest I don’t care if she is or isn’t I just want to know if she’s republican and if so who running to fill her spot. I’m so tired of republicans and confused how these people continue to be elected into office

    • kirejis

She is a tea party Republican who rick scott (the governor of florida) brought in to secure the both the black and female votes and sadly it worked.

  • jet

It doesn’t seem to me that she was speaking literally about the women who “look” like her. I think she was speaking to the fact that women who have been married (to men) for several decades with family – and adhere to heteronormativity are not usually viewed as lesbian or bisexual women. It doesn’t sound eloquent and the allegations are suspect but I don’t think she was speaking with homophobic overtones.

  • Tagirl

She needs more people. The first thing I said when I heard this was, “Where is her PR team?” Wow.

    • chaka1

I think they are in her office. “wink”
For her sake, I hope this story is not true.

  • IllyPhilly

Yes, because clothes make the man or woman. *shrugs* She was trying. LMAO.

  • *scratches head* what? So the proof that you’ve never been with a woman is how you look? Lady…

    • IllyPhilly

  • FattyFatKimye

Typical republican making dumb statements. Just because a woman looks boyish don’t mean they’re gay.

    • cherry

lol tell that to her. apparently, lesbians have to LOOK a certain way,to BE lesbians.and if you don’t look that way, well then your not a lesbian. it’s amazing how stupid people can be.

    • A.J.

Exactly! And just because a woman doesn’t date or doesn’t want to get married does’t mean that she’s gay either. We still have a long way to go…
