Yes, just let that statement marinate for a minute. Florida Lt. Governor Jennifer Carroll is likely about to be in an even bigger mess than she’s already in after sticking her foot all the way in her mouth with her remark about what gay women look like. The reason she made this comment is because she’s been caught in a “compromising position” with a top aide, Beatriz Ramos, inside her office, and so to deflect rumors of the lesbian scandal that is assumed to be brewing between the two, the 52-year-old made this statement, Tampa Bay’s 10 News reported:
“The problem is that when you have these accusations that come out, it’s not just one person you’re attacking,” Carroll said. “It’s an entire family. My husband doesn’t want to hear that. He knows the type of woman I am. I mean, my kids know the type of woman I am. For twenty-nine years – I’m the one that’s married for twenty-nine years. The accuser is the one that’s been single for a long time. So usually black women that look like me don’t engage in relationships like that.”
Anyone want to let us know the standard physical characteristics of a black lesbian? Yeah, she just dug herself in a much deeper hole with that one. On top of that suspect comment, it’s also highly comical that Carroll is using the accuser’s singleness to disprove her credibility, as if single women don’t have anything better to do but try to break up people’s marriages. Someone is making herself look more and more guilty.
A “compromising position” isn’t the only sticky situation Carroll and Ramos are said to have been caught in. In a court filing made late last week by the attorney representing the accuser, Carletha Cole (who was arrested last October on charges that she gave an illegally taped conversation with another Carroll aide to a newspaper reporter), a few other interesting tidbits arose. Cole also claimed Ramos was living at Carroll’s home and that she was ordered by Ramos to find adjoining hotel rooms for Carroll and Ramos when they traveled. Cole said she was also “scolded” by an agent from Carroll’s security team when she placed Ramos next door to Carroll when the lieutenant governor and her husband traveled to Puerto Rico last summer. The agent reportedly told her to not do it again but gave no explanation as to why.
According to Carroll, “That’s totally false and absurd,” and Cole—a grandmother and minister whose never had prior trouble with the law—is simply coming up with these allegations to get the pending felony charges against her dropped. That would be believable if Carroll weren’t so defensive in her denial of the allegations. Understandably, anyone facing a rumor as serious as that is going to try to prove their innocence strongly. However the manner in which she stated her case by saying she doesn’t look like a lesbian, reeks of the potential of a down-low sista, which brings up an interesting topic we never talk about. Men on the DL have remained a hot-button issue, but rarely, if ever, do we think about a woman getting married and carrying on the facade of a happy hetero relationship while masking her true sexual orientation. Today it would seem somewhat silly for a woman to do that given the widespread acceptance of homosexual lifestyles and even the greater acceptance of lesbian women as opposed to gay men. The political environment is much more conservative though and impartial to political figures in heterosexual marriages. When Carroll got married 29 years ago, that would have been true even more so, suggesting it’s not outside of the realm of possibility that she got married to further her career and supressed her true orientation. But that’s just speculation.
On top of Carroll’s weak argument against the potential for a lesbian relationship, Cole was allegedly given a polygraph test and a retired Florida law enforcement agent said when she was asked did she answer truthfully about “observing a sexually compromising position in the Capital,” she passed. I’m pretty sure Carroll’s resignation is being drafted as I type.
What do you think about Lt. Gov Carroll’s lesbian scandal defense and the idea of black women being on the DL?
