Video: Mitt Romney Gets Booed “Showtime At The Apollo” Style At NAACP Convention

Oooooh, tough crowd, eh? Just kidding, it wasn’t that bad, or maybe it was…

While speaking to the NAACP in Houston at their annual convention today, Romney’s criticisms of President Obama and his policies was met with boos and uber shade by those in the crowd listening to his 25-minute speech. When he talked about his hope to get rid of non-essential programs and policies that President Obama has put in place, including “Obamacare,” many in the crowd booed loudly. He tried not to let the heat burn his collar, and kept his speech and smile going. According to Bloomberg Businessweek, Romney also felt the heat for saying, “If you want a president who will make things better in the African American community, you’re looking at him.” I think laughing at that remark would have been more appropriate than booing loudly, but to each their own.

But I’m sure Mitt Romney knew he wasn’t going to be able to impress or change the mind of many in that room, as many in the NAACP stand behind the president, but think of all the hell he would have caught had he passed on their invitation. Ironically, President Obama isn’t planning to speak to the group this election season, but will send Vice President Joe Biden in his place.

Other things Romney touched on during his speech to the civil rights group included his support of traditional marriage in light of President Obama’s support of gay marriage (no boos there from the crowd), and even shouted out his late father, George Romney, and his work with civil rights as if they were his own accomplishments:

“It wasn’t just that my dad helped write the civil rights provision for the Michigan Constitution, though he did. It wasn’t just that he helped create Michigan’s first civil rights commission, or that as governor he marched for civil rights in Detroit – though he did those things, too. More than these public acts, it was the kind of man he was, and the way he dealt with every person, black or white.”

And though he says his dad’s work inspired him to do the same and be the same way, let’s keep it real: When you align yourself with fools like Donald Trump who lead the “Birthers” movement and embrace those of the Tea Party, you’re not going to have much luck with many black voters. I’m just saying, but nice try though.

“Thank you, come again.” *in my Apu voice*

Check out video from the convention, which includes his thoughts on “Obamacare” and the crowd’s response…

Something also noteworthy is that Romney did not pander to the crowd. He didn’t try to speak ebonics or talk about his black friends he had when he was little. He could have made that speech before any crowd. President Obama is good at tayloring his speech to his crowd.

I’m not a fan of Romney but I must say that I am impressed by the courage it took for him to not only speak in front of a group of people who most likely won’t vote for him, but tell his plan knowing that they are dead set against it.

  • DoinMe

Meanwhile Obama snubs the NAACP Convention this year. Hmmmm.

  • Carolyn

I thought the booing was unnecessary and disrespectful. Although you may not agree with what he says I still believe in being cordial and respectful. And for the NAACP to react in that manner really in my opinion made them appear childish and immature. Yes for the past four years many have disrespect President Obama publically but we have to show that we are better than that and that we won’t fight fire with fire. If Romney declined the invitation people would have said oh he’s racist, so he shows up and says something and he’s booed. Really made NAACP look bad. There’s alot better way to show your displeasure with a statement by simply not clapping. I just thought it was unnecessary.

Honestly? What did he expect? You’re talking to a group of civil rights activists here. The majority couldn’t be more “left” and democratic if they tried. WHY did he think it was a good move to tell them he was going to try to repeal Obama’s healthcare reform? Especially when a good chunk of that bill would help black women and children? Clearly the man needs to learn his audience before he goes to speak or he probably would have cut that part out :P

Honestly…im starting to see Mitt as a not so bad option…..its the best out of the worst option basically…with either one as president, i don’t see the economy improving the way it should….im now starting to understand why rich people have offshore accounts, & big businesses are outsourcing labor

  • FromUR2UB

Romney’s allegiance is to big businesses and their bottom lines. Face it folks, the companies that have outsourced are not coming back, unless they’re allowed to pay American workers the mere pittance of wages they pay overseas, and not have to offer any benefits. I could see Romney offering that as an incentive, along with tax breaks for them. The haha is that while those companies may save money by underpaying workers, they probably end up spending it when their materials pass through customs, through increased shipping costs, or losses when products are recalled for lead paint or faulty workmanship. You really can’t control a lot that happens in factories in other countries, because our laws don’t apply there. I’ve heard from a former customs employee, that some overseas factories won’t even allow American inspectors into the factories. Probably the best that can be done is charge the factory penalties for noncompliance.

Sad, a once proud organization [NAACP] has lost its prominence.

  • Candacey Doris

The fact is that without his millions Romney would not have gotten this far. He would have gotten no attention from the Republican party. He’s making a lot of promises he can’t keep because when it comes down to it the President has less power than the media makes him out to have. I can’t vote for someone i really don’t think will do a good job.

    • Nehemiah53

The fact is he [Romney] could be President, and if the roles were reversed
and Obama was booed we would be cry racism!

      • Carolyn

That’s very true. Like I stated earlier we cannot fight fire with fire. We can’t disrespect Romney because other’s have disrespected Obama. If the situation was reversed and President Obama was booed everyone and their momma would be screaming racism. It’s just very immature to respond in that manner and I expected better from the NAACP. This election has really brought out the ugly in most and has showed people their true colors. I always believe in respecting positions even if I disagree with the person.

      • MLS2698

Nobody likes uber rich people who take away jobs, and cuts programs for the needy. But booing IS still rude.

        • Nehemiah53

          My point exactly!

      • Candacey Doris

Never said booing was classy or right. You give people a chance to make their argument an then you do what you do. But that’s neither here nor there where my vote is concerned.

  • CA Pullen

Romney needs to sit down. Anybody tells you that poor people have a safety net for welfare should not vote for him. Don’t vote for him. Romney is all about for the rich people and his buddies. He is not the right candidate. He go rich off people losing their jobs and sending them overseas.

  • RedButterfly81

Having Mutt Bomney speaking at the NAACP event is like inviting the Neo-Nazis the Bud Billiken Day parade here in Chicago.

    • Nehemiah53

      No not the same!

      • FattyKimye

        IJS!

  • Joliee

I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again. Obama expects the black vote no matter what and he will get it. It is unfortunately that many of us are voting based on our parents and grandparents ideal. I’m not saying vote for Romney but open your mind to other political parties besides the democratic and republican parties

  • Sheenabtn

The sad part is that no one is saying a word about the fact that the very man they are supporting is not showing his face at their event. I guess President Obama can do no wrong. They should consider NOT using CNN as their only political insight.

    • Nehemiah53

You are right, he and his people don’t care what we think or say, they know they already got us in the bag!

  • Alissa

This is a lose-lose situation. If he declines their invitation, he is slammed for “not caring about the black vote” and if he goes, he’s booed out of the building. LOL. SMH.

    • Nehemiah53

      It was sad and wrong!

    • MLS2698

      Who invited him there?
