Watch What You Tweet: Holly Robinson Peete Checks 50 Cent Over Autistic Twitter ‘Joke’

Curtis Jackson is one of those people who still hasn’t learned to think before he tweets. Though I’m sure he meant no true harm when he made a joke about autism on Twitter the other day, with close to 7 million followers on the site, he should always be mindful that tweeps is watching, including Holly Robinson Peete, who laid into him after he sent these tweets the other day:

‘yeah just saw your picture fool you look autistic RT @yung_raditz @50cent Release the album or get shot again.’

‘i dont want no special ed kids on my time line follow some body else.’

As a mother of an autistic soon, Holly couldn’t let the tweets go by unacknowledged, and so she posted this letter to the rapper on her website, Hollyrod.org:

Dear 50 Cent,

Since last night my twitter timeline is flooded with tweets and retweets about a response you posted to someone who insulted you. When I read it my heart sank. I thought maybe your account had been hacked. No such luck. Granted, his comment was completely out of line but your retort: “i just saw your picture fool you look autistic”- was so so disappointing. I mean, that’s your comeback?? And you didn’t stop there. You went on to joke about not wanting “special ed kids” on your timeline. Seriously, THIS is how you use your platform of 8 million plus followers??

I’ve met you in passing over the years and I know you are a bright, astute businessman and legitimate philanthropist so it is with a bit of sincere confusion that I ask you… Do you even know what autism is? And what exactly does “autistic” look like? Do you know how wildly prevalent autism is? 1 in 88 have it. That’s 1 in 54 boys. Families suffer a social stigma you will never know. It is a financial and emotional drain for millions, so our non-profit- HollyRod Foundation works hard to raise funds to help these families cope…

I hope you can see how what you might see as a benign insult-or not- was so randomly hurtful, immature and misinformed. Maybe you are naive or indifferent as to how many of your fans might be deeply and personally offended by your insult. At the very least-can you please delete it? If you’ve read your mentions today I am sure you have felt the wrath of autism parents. We are no joke. Neither is autism. We are not about to let you attempt to make “autistic” the new “R-word” under our watch.

Finally, this is my son Rodney Peete [photo above]. He has autism. So I guess this is what autistic looks like? He is in special ed. He loves rap music and is a HUGE fan of yours. He’s a tremendous kid. He has to deal with so much trying to fit in. This isn’t helping.

Sincerely,

Holly Robinson Peete

From a quick glance at 50′s page, it appears he did delete the tweets and retweeted a pic of an autistic boy sent to him by a mother, along with this comment to her:

I would @Danicakes23 never talk about kids condition. People say all kinds of crazy things to me on twitter

Not exactly an apology, but an acknowledgment he stepped on some toes at least. What do you think about Holly Robinson Peete’s reaction to 50′s tweets?

Thank you Holly for speaking your mind and speaking the truth.

  • KamJos

The man-child couldn’t even give a decent apology.

I don’t think he knows how. And I really don’t believe he was sorry or there would have been a decent heartfelt apology. I know even believe he feels that what he said was wrong.

Another ignorant bafoon in his natural habitat aka twitter….

  • moe

My 13yr old cousin has Autism, he is a true joy to be around, a ray of sunshine. 50 hurt a lot of people and i’m so proud of HRP for taking a stand for those who can’t.

He is free to say what he wants. as many of you are now calling him a fool. It just gets to me how so many of us are always on attack mode. I am sure he meant no harm to anyone it was a comment to someone in particular.

I think she made a mountain out of a mole hill!! Yes his comments were insensitive and stupid, but she could have simply “unfollowed” him, or said simply to her followers…I saw them and I don’t entertain ignorance. Period. Had he been talking about her kid personally, then yeah, but otherwise, she jumped into an A and B conversation, (albeit a stupid one) and made it about her. It’s like u arguing with your friend and some random person walks up and jumps in, ….

Letting things go is how things escalate. And if it weren’t for people: like who didn’t let things go, Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr, and a myriad of other people who fought for not only one people’s but everyone’s rights, you might be singing a different tune.

  • redbeans

    If he apologizes….I meant

  • redbeans

It is ignorant, but we all make mistakes. Im sure if he Mrs. peetd will graciously accept. We all need to become more sensitive to other people’s needs.

  • guesswho88

he’s barking up the wrong tree now . he does not want to go there. because several other celebrities who have more money than him have autistic children. he better send a check and apologize quick!

Holly Robinson Peete is a classy lady. Nothing to say about Curtis.

  • RedButterfly81

How old is 50 really? I work with autistic children and I have 3 in my family including my 5 year old niece. Good for Holly for keeping that fool in check, he should grow up and stop using autism and R-word as an insult to people.

“We are not about to let you attempt to make “autistic” the new “R-word” under our watch.” I love that!!

Good for her, I wish people in general and celebrities in particular considered their tweets before blasting them off.
