First Look: The All-Black ‘Steel Magnolias’ Remake Trailer Is Here

The all-black “Steel Magnolias” movie remake is coming right along. The film idea was first announced in October and already there’s a trailer for the made-for-TV movie, which means the feature-length flick shouldn’t be too far behind.

The film, which is set in Louisiana, will air on Lifetime and stars Executive Producer Queen Latifah as M’Lynn, Alfre Woodard as Ouiser, Phylicia Rashad as Clairee, Jill Scott as Truvy, Adepero Oduye as Annelle, and Condola Rashad as Shelby. As for male co-stars, Lance Gross, Tory Kittles and Michael Beasley all have parts in the remake as well.

I don’t remember much from the original but according to other sites some of the scenes and lines in the trailer should be recognizable from the 1989 film. Either way, this looks like a good one to watch from my view. Check out the trailer and tell us what you think.

Will you watch?

  • poetsgroove

Being from the south and with a real southern drawl I’m still not sure about this. But more than likely I’ll will watch. I was hoping someone else would have gotten the lead role instead of Queen Latifah.

  • mz_chocolatina

WOW!!!!! Kinda wish this was made to debut in theatres. . I CANT WAIT!!!! Love all those ladies, especially Mrs. Rashad!!!

  • Nisaboo

@ all the naysayers – Are you serious…did you watch the same thing I did. This movie is a classic and I think our Sistahs did a awesome job because the new casting is a perfect match of the original characters. This should be awesome and as little as we see ourselves on the little or big screen we should NEVER hate on anything possitive..given how we are shown on TV these days! I’m just sayin, really..pull up Sistahs!

    • xyzebra

Not to sound like a naysayer but doesn’t the black remake of white flicks make it harder for black writers to break into the business?

  • Gwen

I love this movie! This should be great.

  • True Southerner

Trying too hard with the accents. And those aren’t Louisiana accents.

It’s good to raise awareness of diabetes among our community.

Why does there need to be a black re-make? Is the story somehow more compelling if the film is remade with a cast of a certain ethnicity?

That’s what I was thinkin! I’d like to see one based on another culture.

Now their is no need to bring up who has been making copies of various different movies …I am sure everyone knows this has been going on for generations…. and as of this day,,, It seem like its going to be a good movie.

I haven’t seen the original “Steel Magnolias” – simply did not appeal to me. Because of this preview, I will now rent and watch the original because I want to be able to compare and discuss them intelligently. I don’t believe in “sacred cows” so to speak – ANY movie can be remade and perhaps made better than the original. I will be looking for this one – I’m not sure if Lifetime is part of my cable subscription, but if it isn’t, I’ll add it so I can see this.

:-( Everything we touch doesn’t always turn to gold. Steel Magnolias is one of my all time favorite movies and they just massacred it!! :-(

  • TrueBlue

This was my favorite movie and thus far I love the trailer I’m excited to see it done with an all black cast & the actresses chosen aren’t newbies so I expect it to be phenomenal.

  • DoinMe

I will be watching and can’t wait to see it.

  • citadelgrrl05

I loved the original steel magnolia…The good thing about this is, its been such a long time since the original came out, can’t wait to see the re-make..Julia roberts was my favorite character in the original :)

  • Dionne

I saw the orginal and I would watch this one as well. I’m aleady teary eyed.

  • aduvalprincess

I don’t know if I will watch this. Just looking at the preview made me feel like I was cheating on the original. =(

  • Shannon

I agree Kelly. Please just write an original screen play. All of the novels by black authors that can be made into a movies…

      Say it sista!

  • Kelly

    So
evidently I am the first to comment on this post…personally I will not watch
this remake simply for the fact that the original was so wonderful. I mean the
original cast was composed of truly notable award winning actresses…Shirley MacClaine, Sally
    Field, Julia Roberts, etc.
Not to take away from this beautiful cast of black women, but some things should be left alone. It’s like if there was a
“white” version of “Waiting to Exhale”, man there would be
an outrage from the black community. Also on a lighter note, the accents in the
trailer were just horrible. As a black woman…I am just disappointed that this
was the best we could come up with “let’s just piggy back off the white
    folks”…SMH

    • Southern_gal

You are so right about the accents… Jill Scott’s accent was horrible!

    • xyzebra

I love your “Waiting to Exhale” comparison! If whites did a re-make of “Waiting to Exhale” black folks would be up in arms. I have mixed feelings about the black remake trend.

    • geezzzz

They did… It’s called Sex in the City… they just made it a series. We are our own worst critics. Give it a chance.

      • msnonoesq

That’s based on its own book smh. We need to be more innovative

      • 2BlueJays

        YES! I Agree

      • bigbootyjudy

First wives club was the white version of waiting to exhale

        • Msmykimoto2u

Yep sure was and I loved that one too! So I will give this one a chance as well
