Check His Footwork: What His Shoes Say About Him

July 3rd, 2012 - By Charing Ball

Do you believe that shoes can make the man?

Well if you do, you are not alone. As recent research suggests that it is not only common to judge people by their footwear; but your judgements are probably right. Researchers at the University of Kansas say that people can accurately judge 90 percent of a stranger’s personality including a person’s general age, their gender, income, political affiliation, and other personality traits simply by the heel tap of his flip flop, boat shoe or sneaker.

Some may consider this junk science but as a expert people watcher, I have long suspected that this was the key to determining whether a dude was a catch or a dud – and I’m not just talking about junk size neither. So in an effort help the ladies weed out or find their perfect match, I have created a list of seven true-to-life personality traits that you can tell just by checking out what he is rocking on his feet:

it turns out anyone can wear any type of shoes at any time. wow, what an amazing concept.

  • durr

I think you might be reading into this whole shoe thing a little too much. Didn’t your momma ever tell you that clothes don’t make the person?

I am past 40 and the first that attracts me to a man is his shoes that he is wearing…I start at the feet and work my way to the top…just like women and their hair..if a an care about his feet that is a plus with me.

  • Tee

I love this and totally agree with the sentiment that you can tell a lot about a man from his shoes. Correction (slide 6) it’s “in arrears” with his child support, not “in the rears”.

  • Ifuaskme2

    LMAO! So true

  • Is It 5:00 Yet?

I lol’ed at the bare feet guy page. Stereotypes. Stereotypes. Stereotypes.

this is a silly article that stereotypes people. I owe 30 pairs of shoes that span the gambit from cons, loafers, wingtips, cap toes, monks, saddles, running and basketball shoes, boots etc. So according to this article basically depending on what time of day or the actual day a woman meets me they will make an assumption about who and what I am. The sad part is someone is gonna read this article and take it as the gospel. SMH!

I TRIED TO READTHIS ARTICLE AND SOME OF THE COMMENTS, I COULD NOT FINISH
EITHER. THERE ARE SO MANY FACTORS THAT THIS ARTICLE DOES NOT TAKE IN TO CONSIDERATION. I’M NOT SURE OF HOW OLD THE WRITER IS AND I WILL LEAVE IT AT THAT. FOR SOME OF WOMEN WHO SAY A “GROWN” MAN SHOULD NOT HAVE SO MANY PAIRS OF TENNIS OR WEAR CERTAIN TYPES OF TENNIS…REMEMBER MEN FEEL THE SAME WAY ABOUT US AND OUR SHOES.

  • maggie

interesting article but I find that a lot of ‘bare feet’ men are pro-black, Nubian men who would never believe in mixing with other races–they think that is genetic homicide.

  • WHOISBSQUARED?

UM….I HAVE A COMMENT, FIRST OF ALL, SHOES DO MATTER A WHOLE LOT WHEN IT COMES TO A GUY, BUT ALSO THE CLOTHING AS WELL. APPEARANCE IS KEY. BUT MY COMMENT IZ TO THE TOPIC ABOUT THE GUY WEARING THE LATEST SNEAKERS…..IVE DATED A GUY THAT WORE THOSE TYPE OF SHOES BEFORE, BUT HE WASN’T THE WAY THIS AUTHOR PUT IT…..I JUST THOUGHT THAT ONE WAS A LIL STEREOTYPICAL……#JUSTSAYIN

  • Janee

*Side Eye* This would’ve made sense if I didn’t know a lot of brothers in Christ who wear those shoes, but not the personality…..except for the colorful Crocs. I’ll let you keep that, but everything else? In the words of Dwight from The Office….”FALSE”

  • Candacey Doris

You know, some people just wear what’s comfortable or what matches? This type of stereotyping really doesn’t work. At all.

  • melissarose10166

I know a guy that’s 39 and he has about 50 pairs of sneakers, some the same, just in different colors. There comes a point in life where that just needs to stop! You are too old for that; sneakers to match every collared stripe and solid color shirt you have. Whatever happened to having a nice pair of white sneakers and a nice pair of black sneakers, that’s it, something simple! But I’ve noticed that younger Black guys, aren’t into sneakers as much anymore. I see them wearing casual shoes/loafers, and not just to work. I’ll tell you this, that really stands out to me and makes me look at them in a whole new light, a good one at that!

LMFAO @ bare feet & sandal guy. Good article & I definitely was in reflection mode :) it would be interesting to see what the female edition would reveal…..just a thought

  • sabrina

YOOO, this article was toooo funny! I literally LOL’ed at number 7.

But YAAAASSSS!! I judge men HARD depending on their shoe game cuz I could already guess the type of person they are depending on what they’re wearing on their feet. And if a guy’s shoe game ain’t up to par, I don’t even bother cause I already know we won’t work out. If I’m gonna put effort into how I look when I’m with you, imma need you to do the same!

idk why but it’s a turn off when a guy need a pair of sneakers to match everything. He has literally has a pair if nikes in every color..Only I’m allowed to have alot of shoes…..

  • DoinMe

Shoes AND a man’s teeth tells a story.

  • Chanda

I believe shoe styles also apply to women. Casual sneaker and loafer guy seem more my style.

  • justsaying

The take on ‘unidentifiable shoes’ is incorrect.

  • MLS2698

I tried to tell a guy last year who was forty-three at the time, that Air Force Ones were marketed for a demographic age group of eighteen to twenty-five, and I think he got mad. It is not good for a grown man to be wearing the same shoes as your little cousin. Also, if you wore Adidas when Run DMC was holding them up at their concert, just leave it alone, consider it a ” been there, done that ” experience.

    • Just_Me:)

I think older guys can rock almost any shoe, as long as it looks like he’s not trying too hard to be “hip”. It’s all apart of his “swagger” and personality.
