Do You Forgive Them? Mindless Behavior Apologizes For Lauryn Hill Joke

Tween R&B group Mindless Behavior ruined any chance of being “those cute little boys on stage at the BET Awards” when they cracked a joke on L-Boogie during the award show Sunday night.

One of the members of the quartet —the one with the wild, curly hair specifically—alluded to Lauryn Hill’s tax problems while they were on stage to present an award with Mike Epps, saying something was “Lauryn Hill not paying her taxes bad.” And though the jab was no doubt scripted, the audience was not amused. Supposedly, neither was Beyonce who got on stage singing Lauryn Hill’s praises immediately after.

Yesterday afternoon, the group tried to right their wrong, via Twitter of course, tweeting:

I’m really not sure if anyone could have gotten away with that joke but it definitely would have sounded better coming from someone who probably actually knows who Lauryn Hill is, and not a group of 14 year olds. Like Bey supposedly said, “not cool.”

What I think is even funnier about this situation is the response MB has gotten from its female fanbase, like this tweet:

@MindlessBhavior The team will never be mad at you. & you don’t need to apologize. Y’all didn’t do anything wrong. We love you.

Ahhh, remember when you were 14 and thought celebrities could do no wrong? Batman of the group Immature ruined that for me when he showed up on their IMX “The Journey” album cover with a pressed bob.

But anyway, do you accept Mindless Behavior’s apology?

Maybe the joke was too soon, or was it because it’s Lauren Hill, a female artist with actual talent? Ppl made plenty of jokes about Wesley Snipes and his tax problems. To me it was just weird coming from MB because they were barely out of diapers in The Fugees and solo Hill days

  • Ms_Sunshine9898

It wasn’t cool, but I mean Lauryn set herself up for failure when she CHOSE not to pay her taxes for the sake of privacy. Yeah she made good music and all, but how is she so special that everyone else can get cracked and joked on and she can’t?

  • Guest360

They shouldn’t be apologizing. They probably don’t even know who Lauryn Hill is, let alone her situation with the IRS. BET is the one that should be apologizing for writing such a crass and unfunny “joke” and giving it to a bunch of 14 year olds who are going to do and say whatever you tell them. They aren’t comedians so why write something like this for them? I can understand if someone like Kevin Hart did this. Just stupid. BET should be ashamed.

  • trouble

First it wasn’t princeton is was the one with the long hair ray ray n the joke wasn’t directed towards lauren hill it was towards her accountants besides the jokes we scripted anyway n they’re just kids tasteless no doubt but not their fault

  • Alicia B.

Im pretty sure that the BET Awards are scripted like everything else. So they had to say that. Everyone make mistakes, no one is perfect and everyone knows that. I think everyone should leave this alone because they are still young and people WILL get mad if 15 year old boys say this and not adults. The one who should be apologizing is BET because they wrote the joke.

  • missioneagles

    Hi -

Of course, they should be forgiven. We have all said things that aren’t appropriate.

    Only GOD is perfect.

  • Ladybug94

Since it’s scripted be mad at the one who wrote it. Kids don’t care or pay attention to taxes, heck you can barely get them to pick up after themselves.

They read from a teleprompter, they didn’t come up with the joke…. BET should do the apologizing not them. But the tweet referring to a grown woman, with children older than them, as “their girl” was much more disrespectful to me. I would never refer to an elder as “the homie” or “my girl” especially not someone in my profession that is well respected.

    • Ladybug94

Thank you for saying that. Calling a woman old enough to be your mother “your girl” rubbed me the wrong way.

    • Hawaiian Breeze

Wow. I just said the same thing because I didn’t see your comment.

  • Wow

Do they even know who Lauryn Hill is? He11, I don’t even know who they are. BET set these little boys us with that lame joke and knew not to give that joke to any of the grown ups who presented.

  • IllyPhilly

It was bad on BET! Those kids were just doing some mindless behavior.

  • Na Na

Pressed Bob! Lmao I’m over here dying seeing that cd cover in my head.

  • Papillon

Do I accept their apology? I don’t even know who they are.

    • SocialButterFly

      hahahaha!! me either…

      • yasmin2606

        But seriously…. Who are they????

  • baybeK8s

Shame on the writers and production crew for assigning that joke to those young men. Why didn’t Mike Epps do the joke? Mindless Behavior were tricked into living up to their name.

    • Hawaiian Breeze

I find it fascinating that at 15/16, these boys are called ‘young men’ while a 26-year-old women such as myself gets referred to as a ‘young lady’.

      • baybeK8s

Is it ever proper to address people as “young men/women”? I don’t want to offend.

      • Guest

Wtf? What are you babbling about? Are they suppose to call you young stud, young butch, young tramp? I’m sure the people calling you young lady are much older than you retard.

        • Hawaiian Breeze

I’d ask you the same, dipshit.

  • Gimmeabreak78

Why should we be surprised by anything a group called “Mindless Behavior” does? It seems the name of their group has already warned us of what’s to come.

    • MB

The name actually gives you the freedom to be yourself. It gives teenagers confidence to just be themselves. It does not actually mean not caring about what you do.

      • Gimmeabreak78

I know. I was being sarcastic.

  • Joanna

Who cares, it’s true. She didn’t pay taxes I would make jokes about her too. But seriously who really cares about these little 14 year olds it’s not like they are productive members to the society so why give them attention

  • entyce

Who cares!!! Most celebrities have tax and financial woes. They will find out soon.

  • bluekissess

I don’t pay attention to kids. I seen them but I barely understood what they were saying. Congratulations to Beyonce for winning

  • angel

I thought it was the little boy with the ponytails he made the comment. Well, no matter. I thought it was very tasteless on their behalf, but nothing short of what I expect from a group of 14 year old kids who will soon be one-hit-wonders. Those little boy groups don’t last. They have a long way to go to even accomplish a small fraction of the things Lauryn Hill has.

    • angel

I also think BET were idiots for scripting that for them to say. I swear they’re award ceremonies get less and less classy and more and more trashy each and every year.

    • Ladybug94

Exactly, they are 14 so why blame them for something that’s on a teleprompter written by adults. The BET awards show is crass altogether so this just fit right in with the rest of the foolishness.

  • Trisha_B

They didn’t do anything wrong & they shouldn’t have apologized. The jokes are scripted. They were given something & they read it. BET producers or whoever should have apologized. & plus what makes Lauryn exempt from being the butt of jokes? At award shows they are always throwing jabs at celebs who are in trouble

  • sammi_lu

They are kids.. and they were prob only reading off the teleprompter. It was probably in bad taste but award show writers and hosts have and always will parlay current events and scandal into a possible punchline.

    • IllyPhilly

      Thank You!!
