Do You Forgive Them? Mindless Behavior Apologizes For Lauryn Hill Joke

Tween R&B group Mindless Behavior ruined any chance of being “those cute little boys on stage at the BET Awards” when they cracked a joke on L-Boogie during the award show Sunday night.

One of the members of the quartet —the one with the wild, curly hair specifically—alluded to Lauryn Hill’s tax problems while they were on stage to present an award with Mike Epps, saying something was “Lauryn Hill not paying her taxes bad.” And though the jab was no doubt scripted, the audience was not amused. Supposedly, neither was Beyonce who got on stage singing Lauryn Hill’s praises immediately after.

Yesterday afternoon, the group tried to right their wrong, via Twitter of course, tweeting:

I’m really not sure if anyone could have gotten away with that joke but it definitely would have sounded better coming from someone who probably actually knows who Lauryn Hill is, and not a group of 14 year olds. Like Bey supposedly said, “not cool.”

What I think is even funnier about this situation is the response MB has gotten from its female fanbase, like this tweet:

@MindlessBhavior The team will never be mad at you. & you don’t need to apologize. Y’all didn’t do anything wrong. We love you.

Ahhh, remember when you were 14 and thought celebrities could do no wrong? Batman of the group Immature ruined that for me when he showed up on their IMX “The Journey” album cover with a pressed bob.

But anyway, do you accept Mindless Behavior’s apology?

    No one is looking at the fact that Ms Hill didn’t pay her taxes. So she is open to what ever comes her way she is not the first person who has be convicted of not paying their taxes. Besides she knew she had to pay taxes.

    Don’t know them, but yes I would accept their apology. They are children and someone had to ok them to make what every comment they made. As a personal rule I don’t watch award shows of any kind. One more thing why should we walk on egg shells about Lauryn Hill tax problems. She’s a educated women and should know when you make money you pay taxes. So she is no different then anyone else who owes the IRS. As far as Bey comment “not cool” what would be cool of her is for her to pay Lauryn tax bill, now that would be cool. I don’t understand anyone who makes the type of money Ms Hill has made not to know that they have taxes to pay. I really don’t feel they owe an apology and anyone demanding one should be quiet. It will go away and I am sure Ms Hill has other pressing matters on her mind. I pray for her and if I had the money I would help her to keep her out of jail if that was possible. Maybe instead of us worrying about a tween group we don’t know. we should sat up a fund for her $5.00 each or what ever you can spare.

      I’m 27 years old and as you see from the comments, at least 36 other readers care about this situation, which has also gotten some of the highest page views today. Perhaps you didn’t watch the BET Awards or pay attention to the aftermath or the reaction from 30-year-old Beyonce but a lot of people felt the joke was innapropriate, whether Mindless Behavior wrote it or not, because Lauryn Hill Stans are in full effect, and it was a bit of a low blow. If f you write about MB making the crack, it’s only fair to also write about them trying to correct the wrong, even if they weren’t truly at fault, and that’s what I did.

    The comment was “Lauryn Hill tax accountant bad.” Not, “Lauryn Hill not paying her taxes bad.” At any rate, the joke was in poor taste, but it was scripted. Do I forgive them? No. But not because I’m mad. I don’t forgive them because they never did anything to me in the first place. The only person who has the choice of forgiveness is Lauryn.
