Bet You Didn’t Know: Secrets Behind the Making of “Set It Off”

Well, that’s…interesting

Sometimes casting directors can be a bit disillusioned. The role of “Frankie,” which eventually went to Vivica Fox, was supposed to be played by Rosie Perez. Huh? Maybe Vivica played the role so well that I can’t picture Rosie in it, but that could have been a really poor casting choice. Who knows. Either way the role went to the right person.

I will have to go back and watch this movie. I don’t remember Jada saying that line either. I love this movie this is still a classic to me. Same with the Soundtrack I wish they would have talked about the soundtrack. Anyways, I didn’t know there was going to be a sequel I’m glad there wasn’t some movies are better left the way they are.

Queen did an excellent job because she enjoyed playing herself on the screen. I knew that then.

A “realistic portrayal of the desperate measures black women *have to* resort to make ends meet”? Maybe it’s nit-picky, but can we not be so quick to generalize about how utterly downtrodden we all are? Or maybe the writer meant to reference the measures *these four women* had to resort to. I would hope that’s what it was.

  • belladea

    He’s a white male, that’s why!

This film should have received Oscar nominations esp. for performances by Vivica Fox and Queen Latifah. This is Vivica Fox’s best performance. “Set It Off” showed what Vivica can do with the right material. I wish there would have been a sequel with Jada Pinkett if it had a good script.

I hope they finally post this message of mine…if not it’s a C-O-N…you know the rest.

The biggest ‘secret’ of this movie is how it was completely ROBBED by Ben Affleck’s ‘The Town’ (2010). Watch both of them back-to-back, the similarities are striking.
What’s worse is how the critics panned ‘Set it Off’ but ‘The Town’ was well received by most of them. Hmmmm…

Anyways, nice piece, it brought back memories.

    • Msmykimoto2u

Yes, The Town COMPLETELY ripped off Set It Off

    • cake211

      heck yeah!

  • Vandellish

Please post my comment…I’ve entered it twice and it has nothing offensive in it nor does the link. These Hollywood hacks need to be exposed.

“While we’d love to see a sequel, I’m not exactly sure how that would
happen considering three of the four characters die at the end of the
flick.” I thought Frankie got arrested at the end and Stoney got away on the bus. Didn’t two out of four characters survive?

    • http://twitter.com/1PMChannel Princess P.

They all died except for Stoney (Jada Pinkett Smith). Frankie was forced to the ground when she stole the detectives gun and forced them to shoot her when she pointed the gun at the detective. Yeah…..I’ve seen it way too many times☺

Very true & the wig was awful. She shouldve worn her real hair

“Though USA Today’s Susan Wloszczyna said the film was “more fun to watch than it has any right to be”she still slammed it, calling the movie, “overlong, overdone and over-wrought.” says The Jewish woman. Overlong? This snob just created words, she didn’t even give it an intelligent critique. The movie is a black community classic for a reason I’m sure white women can relate to *rolls eyes*

God I miss the 90′s. Movies and the music industry were at their respective prime; now we are saddled with nothing but vapid, trite, songs and movies that we can’t even decipher. *sigh*

    • DILLIGAF98

We do get plenty of rewrites now though. Are there any original concepts out there?

  • Ms_Sunshine9898

I can’t watch this movie lol, the way Cleo dies at the end messes me up too bad!

  • IllyPhilly

“I got Money!” I just love that part

When I saw Blair Underwood in this movie, I couldn’t get over how FINE he was. I had always like him, but for some reason he just looked extra good in this movie.

  • Jennfer

Doesn’t some one say ‘Boogie down bronx” in the film…I can’t recall if it was Stoney or not but I kinda remember something like that…I could be wrong..either way LOVE the film

  • flaudagrl

You are both right. I LOVE Blair and that’s exactly what he told Stoney.

  • GoodheartandsouL

I could not even IMAGINE Rosie Perez playing the role of Frankie. No way in heLL! They MORE THAN made the right choice. Great movie!

    • GBermudez

She could have. She’s latina, so she can do whatever. Latinas are naturally better actresses.

      • LeeLeeC

I guess that’s why so many of them are on tv now…lol…sarcasm. You should have stopped at the second sentence….I agree…but I still love Rosie

        • Just2hurtu

However, it was a BLACK film. Should Vivica have been cast in Selena? GTHOH please..

      • DILLIGAF98

This is definitely the most moronic comment I have seen online today. Cudos.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Yolonda-Young/100000661397727 Yolonda Young

It was the part when they was acting out The Godfather at the table.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lisa-Tate/100000728183555 Lisa Tate

You’re right Yvette. I’ve seen that movie WAY too many times myself and I don’t recall hearing that either.

    • DILLIGAF98

They were just acting out the Godfather. They weren’t even serious.

  • Yvette

I have seen this movie more times than I care to admit, and I do not remember Stoney ever saying she was from the Bronx. When she and Blair Underwood’s character were talking, I remember him saying he moved there (Los Angeles) from New York and she stated that she had never been outside of L.A….please correct me if I am wrong.

    • just me

IN THE REENACTMENT SCENE WHER THEY DID THE INFAMOUS ODE TO GODFATHER FRANKIE SAID,”DON STONEY FROM THE BRONX”

      • Jennifer

        I thought so!

      • LeeLeeC

Wasn’t it because they were acting like MAFIA…which is mostly in NY….???
