BET Awards 2012: Ye Freestyles, D’Angelo Shows Us How It Feels, and Cissy Houston Builds a Bridge Over Troubled Waters

If you didn’t catch the BET Awards show last night, you truly missed out. That’s normally not the sentiment one feels after spending four hours watching the network, but yesterday BET showed that all of the viewers’ graveling over the past few years was well worth it because the folks behind the annual production definitely stepped their game up.

There were a few moments everybody anticipated before last night’s show like D’Angelo hitting the stage and an expected Whitney Houston tribute, but both were better than anyone imagined (although the bar was already set pretty low). Mr. Brown Sugar took us back to his “Untitled” Days, performing “How Does it Feel” and Mariah Carey hit the stage to introduce the Whitney Houston tribute and talk about their friendship, followed by performances from Monica, who took us straight to church, Brandy, Chaka Khan, and Cissy Houston, who amazingly belted out “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” in memory of her daughter.

BET got the Maze and Frankie Beverly tribute right too, with Joe, Tyrese, and Faith Evans singing  a few tunes before the band hit the stage themselves. Kanye also opened up the show with his G.O.O.D Music, “Lamborghini Mercy” crew, Yolanda Adams and Amber Bullock tore up the Gospel Sundays segment, and Chris Brown only lip synched through half of his performance. All in all, this year’s festivities were a major improvement over previous years.

Check out all of the performances from the night right here. Which was your fav?

I never watch awards shows, but I saw a few clips after the fact:

–Cissy Houston was brave for getting up there in the midst of all that emotion, HOWEVER, she didn’t sound good to me. I kept hearing cracked notes & I’m not sure if it was because of the emotional stress or old vocal pipes…?
–Kim looked mad wack & Kanye’s speech for whatever song (didn’t catch which one it was) was awkwardly painful to watch. He’s just…odd.
–Jay’s suit looked too young, & Nicki’s lace front was busted as always. Usher didn’t sound good for the 3 seconds I saw. Too much falsetto & it sounded booty.
–In general BET awards are always super hypocritical promoting skanky garbage “music” & then throwing some gospel in there for redemptive purposes. They all need J-E-S-U-S, cuz a little Yolanda Adams on stage aint saving nobody’s soul.

I loved the show well all the parts I did see.but it was good

  • WhatIMean

Brandy was EVERY.SINGLE.THING. Absolutely loved her and I really wish her return to music the absolute best. Monica was on point as always. Felt for Mama Cissy. I was good with the tribute, BET redeemed themselves after the Prince and MJ horrible tributes.

  • Hey

Didn’t see the show, would have been my first time though. But all the negative comments before the show aired put me off. Between, was there any performance remembrance for Donna Summers?

I loved the show, but what was with all the Kardashian love? Saw Bey almost as much. I didn’t care for Nicki Minaj’s performance, if it’s all going to be bleeped out, why sing it? Usher was not his best, but still pretty to look at.Melanie Fiona killed it and Cissy Houston was amazing. Best part of the night other than the Whitney Houston tribute was when Kevin Hart lost his arm.

Way to much front row shots…No one wants to see Kim K. or at least I don’t. AMAZING tribute to Whitney and to Maze featuring Frankie Beverly. D’Angelo…mmmmm, nice! BET stepped it up, BUT next year NO KIM K.!!!

I loved a majority of the performances. i didn’t like chris or Usher set. Loved, loved, loved the whitney tribute. i was waiting on Mariah to sing tho. Nicki’s performance skills are getting better. & I loved the comedy of Kevin Hart & Samuel Jackson. The bleeping was getting on my nerves. whole verses were getting bleeped out. the curse words weren’t getting bleeped. The bleep man needs to learn the lyrics of the songs so he know when the words are coming. I got tired of seeing beyonce’s face. I’m sorry. the camera stayed on her the whole time, it was on her more than Kim. it’s like BET needed that front row to get people watching. & the soulja boy cry lol. he was feeling it. Overall, good job BET. don’t back track

I have to agree with bluekissess – loved theperformances but DANG, it seemed like I was watching a Kris Jenner/Kardashian presentation! The camera STAYED on the front row but mainly Kim. If you look at BET’s photo gallery from last, themajority of the pics were of Kim. I did not even know some of the other stars were in attendance because they didn’t get any video time. Sad to think BET used her to boost ratings instead of using the most taleneted black entertainers they already have…. Her ego went up 500%!

    • bluekissess

Remember that story the scarlet letter? I get confused because Kim is known to do the splits on her back. Why is she being praised? Yes, life goes on but she’s banking on something that should put most people to shame.

  • bluekissess

Kanye set the tone… loved the freestyle. D’Angelo didn’t miss a beat. The gospel melody was uplifting (the audience didn’t stand and groove to them), Brandy and Monica did well, I enjoyed the Kevin Hart skit.

I wasn’t completely satisfied with the show. At one point I thought it was the Kim Khardashian show. She got more tv time than the performers. Rick Ross performs every year, Chris Brown’s performances are the same. I’m over it

    • NiceNasty

I kinda agree but let’s be honest the camera was on Bey way more then Kim. To me it seemed like it was all about Her and Jay from jump street. They won most of the awards, which I think was a load of BS. I jus don’t understand, out of all of the people in the building they only focused on the front row. SMH!!! We have got to do better.

      • bluekissess

I had a typo. I wasn’t satisfied with the show. Your absolutely right. I bet they broke off a check or two to B.E.T. who are we kidding? As long as Viacom is writing checks we won’t do better.

        • NiceNasty

Ur so right, and I don’t mean to be cruel are anything. But when wale knocked that drink out of Jay’s hand I was like good for you. Cause Wale was jus trying to shake his hand, but he was acting like he is so much better. Even Bey looked at him like he was crazy. But I was laughing my a$$ off, and i wished it wasted all over him and her(jay and bey). But hey every dog has it’s day and I jus pary that they can handle the big fall!!!

  • quest

It was nice to Chantay Moore, I haven’t seen her perform in years. And of course Cissy Houston had me in tears.

  • TRUTH IS

I felt some sorrow for Mrs. Houston. She can sang, true gospel singer. That song was befitting for Whitney’s remembrance. I could have imagined them singing it together.
