DY-NO-MITE!!! 8 Celebrities and the Roles That Typecast Them and Stunted Their Careers

Jaleel White

The suspenders, high-pitched voice and glasses helped create the persona of Steve Urkel on “Family Matters.” It was the breakout role which turned Jaleel White into the star of the sitcom after he was only scheduled for only a few appearances. “Did I Do That?” quickly caught on and doing the “Urkel Dance” followed not too much later. The show has lived on in re-runs and DVD, making him very rich from the royalties, but Jaleel has complained about being in Steve’s shadow. Even during his recent stint on “Dancing With The Stars,” more folks wanted to see him do the Urkel Dance than the Pasodoble.

I don’t think all of those presented were type-cast. Chappelle has appeared in several movies, and I think has the appeal to do other types of acting. Alfonso Ribeiro part on the Fresh Prince is a distant memory. So, I think he should rebuild his acting career. Lisa Bonnet is like Alfonso in that the time she spent on the Cosby Show is a distant memory.
The key – imo – is to start by taking small roles in movies, not sit coms, etc.

  • lalatarea

    love the ending lol

LaWanda Page WAS NOT on 227, that was Helen Martin as Pearl!

say what you want about jimmy walker, he was not typecast imo…he was a horrible actor, even on goodtimes. only other thing he could do was standup comedy. in fact, he was put on the show due to his standup if im not mistaken (which i could be; lot of yrs gone by now lol). even when he tried to play other roles, he really wasn’t very good. he was pretty lucky at the time, but i know life has been tough for him since those days

Lisa Bonet – too much sun and the years have not been good to her but this happens to most half breed fems.

  • CriticXtreme

Amazing how the Necrons create catchphrases for black folks, i.e., right on right on, Sucka and What you talkn about Willis”. Of course you know there are many more. Sayn these catchphrases made the people saying them poor yet the writers have property in the Hollyweird Hills and still get checks every week.

Alfonso Ribeiro – he made Tom Jones richer. I do feel that Alfonso is a great director. Because of his character, it has spawned sayings from broads on the West coast, like “you should be Robin Banks instead of acting like Carlton Banks……”

JJ- all I can say is (damn!, damn!, damn!) the years have not been good for him. They didn’t negotiate to receive $crilla for reruns, syndication. Did you know that Good Times and other black shows were written by white people? Shame!!!! That would be Norman Lear and other Necrons. I can’t stomach watching these show.

  • CriticXtreme

Jaleel White – today, looks like that friend who forgot his glasses. His eyes are very creepy.

  • CriticXtreme

Gary Coleman – it’s a shame his little azz was kicked down the stairs by white-t and know cares to investigate.

What about Rudy from the Cosby. And precious

    • gdub520

‘rudy’ is on house of payne, a sitcom on tbs by tyler perry…sexy, beautiful little lady, hardly typecast

      • bigdawgman

Amen to that! I’d prefer not to think about her being Rudy anymore, makes me feel creepy….

  • nolagirl

I just read the tags instead of going through all those pages.

Now, Stephanie G., we know you only mentioned David Chapelle, Lisa Bonet, and the girl who played Laura to make the list longer so we would have to click more pages and make MN more money …because they don’t belong. But I see you.

  • Rasheekeemeekee

That would be JOHN Amos…James, Evans of course..was the character he played.

LOL I remember when Carlton was in Fergie’s “Glamorous” video, doing the dance too… If I ever see him in anything else, I won’t be able to take him seriously…

    • bigdawgman

Haha, too bad Chapelle’s show isn’t on, they could have given Alphonso the “Wayne Brady treatment.” That is still my favorite skit, even more than the Rick James one.

  • IllyPhilly

Aw, boo hoo they made and some still make tons of money being typecast. I only feel bad for Gary Coleman.

    • Yepp

Lol, I know right! Some of them still have royalties on those characters and all of these shows are syndicated, so they’re still getting paid 16+ years later! Sidenote: Lisa Bonet leaving A Different World was the best thing that ever happened to the show, Jasmine Guy was a better actress anyway.

      • Is It 5:00 Yet?

Agreed. I like the episodes better after Denise left. Her character was boring in comparison to Whitley’s.
