How were you able to grow your client list so quickly?
KH: We started with just Terrence, and then we signed the twins, Miki and Me’Lisa Barber. From there, word just spread; we picked up other track and field athletes, like LaShawn Merritt, Bernard Williams and Bolota Asmerom. Now, we have more than thirteen and are still growing.
What exactly do you do for your clients (athletes)?
KH: I use my law degree all the time in this business. I broker deals from brands, I negotiate fees for competing in sports events. We only think of the Olympics when it comes to managing an athlete but there are sports competitions all over the world that my clients are invited to throughout the year. I negotiate appearance fees. But we also go further with managing their careers.
Is that what makes you and Icon different?
KH: We are very simply different from most sports management companies. As a woman, I’m nurturing by nature; so I pay attention to their lives around their careers. I go outside of my scope of responsibilities like expanding their portfolio, finances and taxes. I pay attention to a lot of details that most managers would not.
What kind of boss are you?
KH: I have been described as the “Devil Wears Prada.” Some might call me a diva because I have to have the best of everything. Everything has to be 1st class with me. I’m also a boss that handles her business.
