Let’s just say people weren’t too enthusiastic at the thought of Jennifer Hudson playing Winnie Mandela in the biopic Winnie, particularly with Terrence Howard playing her husband, South African apartheid leader Nelson Mandela. Less than stellar reviews from the screening at the 2011 Toronto Film Festival also confirmed that lack of enthusiasm but now the general public is getting a chance to make up their own minds about the film.

Winnie has been scheduled for a Fall release and a new trailer is giving us a first look at what to expect from the movie, which is directed by Darrell Roodt and follows the life of Winnie from her early childhood through to her marriage and later imprisonment of her husband. According to Soul Culture, the film chronicles her continuous harassment by the security police, banishment to a small Free State town, betrayal by friends and allies, and more than a year in solitary confinement.

Check out the trailer below and tell us what you think. Will you see it when it’s released?

i’ve seen many people potray Mandela and i have to give Terrence a torch, he did Justice to the role, the accent i was almost convinced that it is the young Tata(Mandela), the swagg and never die attitude he’s got it all and J Hud, didn’t really have the accent right but when he says the Zulu words( e’g Amandla), he’s got it on on point morethan many non South African… i say these two did justice to this Film and i hoep Mama Winnie’s anger will be eased when she sees the end product.

J Hud I agree – Terrence not so much.
I think it will do better in DVD sales than in the theatre.

Jennifer Hudson is NOT an actress. She is singer who won an Oscar for screeching out a popular song. She has zero screen presence, can’t speak coherently and is just plain annoying. I will NOT be seeing this. The beautiful and talented SA actress Terry Pheto should have gotten the role
