WEEKEND WRAP-UP: Curtains For Audra? ‘Cruel Summer’ On The Way! + MORE!
Hey loves! Listen, while I’m sure the celebs were up to some ratchetness – especially in Miami since the Heat won the championship – I pretty much have only good news to share this week! Let’s catch up with the celebs, shall we??
Ossie Davie and Ruby Dee documentary In The Works
Now THIS is great news. After years of loving them as a couple, Ossie Davis and Ruby’s love of each other, life and activism is now becoming a documentary. Ozzie (who passed in 2005) and Ruby’s grandson Muta’Ali Muhammad and his film partner Jevon “NJ” Frank will spearhead the project with lots of input from Ms. Dee. Muhammad said the film will focus on Davis and Dee’s 57 year marriage as well as their social activism. At this point, they’re looking to show the first portion of the documentary in the fall to celebrate Dee’s 90th birthday and hope to have it completed by Black History Month in 2013. Muhammad and Frank have started a Kickstarter site to fund the documentary. You can read more on The Huffington Post.
Touré’s New Gig
We tend to see author/journalist/television contributor Touré quite often when social issues arise so it should come as no surprise that he now has a permanent home on MSNBC. Starting on Monday at 3pm, Touré will co-host “The Cycle,” along with S.E. Cupp, Steve Kornacki and Crystal Ball, as they replace former host Dylan Ratigan. The panel of four will be on together everyday and mostly discuss politics. But don’t think that’ll ever stop Touré from talking his talk on Twitter! Click here for the full story.
Viola Davis, Jennifer Hudson and others Receive Star on Walk of Fame
There’s a long list of honorees finally getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and they include some of your favorite. For her contribution in the acting field, Viola Davis is being honored. On the recording side, artists Jennifer Hudson, Usher and Luther Vandross (posthumously) will be receiving stars for their contributions. It does seem a little weird that Jennifer Hudson would be receiving an award for her musical contribution when she hasn’t made a huge splash with her albums. The Hollywood Reporter has the full list on their site. Congratulations to all the honorees!
Mya’s Latest Venture
When one door doesn’t seem to be opening for you, it is time to get your management team together and knock on another one. Singer Mya is doing just that as she readies herself to work with Ghanian clothing brand, Koshie O. Mya has been tapped as one of the celebrity women to be part of Koshie O’s “The Koshie O. Woman” campaign. According to Singersroom.com, Mya’s designs will hone in on women who are always super busy but want to be fashionable while knocking out everyday tasks. She will design with the Koshie O. creative team and styles should be available for the Spring 2013 line release.
Temporary Curtains for Audra McDonald
Just days after winning a Tony Award for lead actress for her role in “The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess,” Audra McDonald is taking a medical leave of absence. According to The Huffington Post, Audra has inflamed vocal cords and must take a two week break to rest. She’s very disappointed but is glad she can return on July 3rd.
‘Cruel Summer” Release Date
Finaaly, it looks like we’ll really get that G.O.O.D. Music compilation album, Cruel Summer. Pusha T, member of that G.O.O.D. conglomerate told Funkmaster Flex on hot NYC radio Hot 97 that the album will be released on August 7th. Kanye West has released several songs over the past few months which feature members of the G.O.O.D family so the album will undoubtedly showcase the talents of Pusha, Big Sean, Teyana Taylor, Kid Cudi, 2 Chainz, Kanye him and others.
Introducing: Hypnotic Brass Ensemble
I have been holding on to this band with hopes that I would be able to see them live in a full show and then tell you what I already knew about them. Okay, so the backstory: I first heard of HBE when a friend and I were walking through the Times Square train station and they were performing. We stayed to listen for a few minutes but for some silly reason, we decided not to buy any music and then forgot the name of the band! So after looking for awhile, I found the name of the band but have been waiting on them to come back to NYC. I saw them last week live at Highline Ballroom and they tore the roof OFF! You’ve got to check out songs like “Kryptonite” and “Ballicki Bone” which showcase instrumentation at its highest level. You’ll love the music, I promise, and will be fiending to see them live! Just a note: They spend a lot of time overseas so it is really hard to catch them in the States. If you hear about them in your town, drop what you’re doing and buy a ticket!
