“Confessions” Usher (2004)

Jermaine Dupri

The diamond status album released in 2004 brought us more than just great R&B. The popular track of the same name had many people convinced that the album had everything to do with Usher’s public breakup with Rozanda ‘Chili’ Thomas just months before the album’s release. In 2010 Usher was featured in E’s True Hollywood Stories series and “Confessions” was discussed. However, JD, who served as executive producer for the album, claims that the album and that song in particular was more his story than the R&B singer. “Confessions was actually about a relationship I was in,” said JD. “I got another woman pregnant, and my girlfriend wouldn’t  take me back.” I hope he wasn’t talking about that whole “him cheating on Janet with a stripper” mess…but either way, it made for some classic music!

Trey SOngz had nothing to do with “Bumpx3″…..R.Kelly wrote it and J-Boog(B2K member) is the sole background vocalist on that song.

“USE YOUR HEART” SWV by The Neptunes??? OMG I never knew all these years I been listening to this song on my ipod…practically in tears from this lovely romantic song…that The Neptunes was behind it all this time….Love it…

The only suprises were Trey, Neptunes, and Stevie.

Ashford & Simpson were writing hits for Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terell in the 60′s. They were an amazing songwriting duo. It was huge for a woman to be in the business like that. Prince & Stevie are Prince & Stevie.

ATL has great songwriters/Producers. Jermain Dupri has been writing hits for almost 20 years. He’s wrote/co-wrote some masterpieces for Mariah and Usher. And The Clutch(which Kerri Hilson is a part of), Johnta Austin, Brian Michael Cox and Dallas Austin are responsible variety of hits from the 90′s to now.

As for Ghost writing. It’s always been done. Many of the singers who claim they’re songwriters aren’t. They pay flat fees for the ownership of songs because of the residual income that publishing provides. Some write entire songs and some write portions of songs such as hooks(which a lot producers do for rappers).

LMAO, a list full of (except Stevie) of songs with no staying power, will not stand the test of time, songs not even played on the radio, anymore. You should have focused on all the hits writing by: Neyo, Norm Whitfield, Ashford & Simpson, Curtis Mayfield, Bee Gees, R.Kelly & more Prince etc.

I already knew about a lot of these songs b/c reading liner notes can be informative and interesting. “Use Your Heart” oozes early Neptune goodness. The beat has this jazz/spaced out/quiet storm feel to it that I hear a lot on Kelis’ “Kalidescope”. They wrote the remix to “Right Here” as well.

I’m not sure which ones but according the show Unsung Jermain Jackson produced several of DeBarge’s hits in the mid 80′s. I think that is also huge.

I know this is off subject, but does Beyonce remind anyone else besides me of the late great Phyllis Hyman? Now, before I get alot of backlash let me be clear….what I am referring to is Phyllis’ sense of style. I don’t know why, but when I look at Beyonce’s CD covers or see something flamboyant that she is wearing on the red carpet, I just feel like I’m looking at a modern day reincarnation of Phyllis (obviously I am/was a HUGE Phyllis Hyman fan). Phyllis was a MUCH better singer and had a very fierce fashion style, but I think Beyonce (I couldn’t possibly know this for sure) sometimes get her inspiration for Ms. Hyman….just sayin. That is the only similarity…nothing else.

**from Ms. Hyman not for Ms. Hyman*..sorry about the typo.

        Could be…

Yeah, I get what ur saying.Theres an album cover of Phyllis ( i think is prime of my life) where she had a rhinestones sequins dress and Beyonce got almost the exact same dress and pose on the cover of her first solo album “dangerously in love”

You get royalty checks for melodies too do Milian’s checks should have been nice.

The reverend from Amen, Clifton Davis, wrote ‘Never Can Say Goodbye.’ I think that beats everything on this list.

    • Rayjulian85

      Wow! Really? It sure does..lol
