Madame On The Street: Can Black People Be Racist?

June 19th, 2012 - By MN Editor

Considering that Black people experience so much racism in the world, is it possible for us to be “racist?” Per our usual, we took to the streets of New York to find out from the people themselves. Let us know what you think in the comments section. We want to know!

Nooooo!……. pff, If racism was only against blacks! WTH? Racism is Racism (look it up), its not for one race just like slavery isnt reserved for the African that was forced to come to America. – There are more White slaves in the world than Black and there are plenty of races to be hateful towards, not just blacks. Americans, and esp. Black people really show the sad education level of the U.S. when they ignorantly act like slavery is over or that Racism is a “Black & White” thing. However I would agree that Blacks in the U.S. seem to find it easier to hate other races than any others with the excuse that its their right…….actually the only thing that keeps racism going so strongly in America are the Black people who, themselves, nor theyre parents (and most likely not even their grandparents) were not slaves. This whole thing is now Generations Old, and we still cant let it go.

Black people are human beings with brains just like everyone else, regardless of the color of their skin. To say that black person cannot be racist is, in fact, a racist view of black people. As a clinical psychologist, I can say unequivocally that all people are biologically programmed to differentiate between themselves and others by “grouping” people into categories. For those who are educated, categories are simply that. It’s ignorant to say that you don’t see color, if you have working eyes, you can tell someone is black or white. The question is whether or not you understand that stereotypes are socially constructed lies designed to oppress others.

I am white. I am also Jewish. Black people get more discriminating in this country then Jews, partially because you cant always tell if someone is Jewish. But antisemitism is alive and well in this country and I cant. even count the number of times that I have hear comments made towards me or in front of me that blew me away, made me feel worthless, and infuriated me. Black people experience significantly more racism because color of skin is more visible.

I work in Detroit and a lot of my clients are Black. As sad as it makes me to say this, there is some truth to claims that Black people have it harder when it comes to functioning in predominately white areas. It is more difficult to get a job, black men are more likely to be arrested simply for walking down the street and being searched on grounds of being suspicious, and black people experience racist comments and attitudes on a consistent basis. It breaks my heart to see my clients struggling to leave bad situations (I am not saying that all black people are in bad situations, but I specialize in the rehabilitation of criminals, so my clients typically are) , doing their absolute best, and getting the raw end of the deal, while my white clients do not experience the same amount of adversity in general.

I can understand why many black people feel ambivalent about connecting with white people. But just like all black people are not lazy and incompetent (in response to a previous comment, I call white people lazy an incompetent all the time, white people absolutely use those terms to describe other withe people), all white people aren’t ignorant and racist.

Everyone is ‘racist’. It’s innate. But that doesn’t define people. What they say and do defines them. It is a trait that can have it’s arse kicked. Walk a mile in anothers’ moccasin. Feel what they feel. Then turn to the golden rule that defines civilized society. Do unto others……

Ms Sunshine, I just want to say that your comments are insightful and you articulate them well. Which is why many of us as black/hispanics still struggle at effectively communicating with not only each other but everyone else. But the core of all this as youv’e stated lies within the relationship that one has (or should have) with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! And even then many fall short because we incorporate our politics on the pulpit which damages the purpose of the gospel. That said I pray that you continue to be that light for others as well as our fellow Black Americans. Because God is no respecter of persons. And the faster the Jackons and Sharptons of this world realizes that, the better equipped many uninformed Blacks will be in life.

I am black and I am racist against black people, Too many that I meet are ignorant, and wear it like a badge of honor, they take pride in it. I do enjoy being around older middle class black people, A lot of us forget how strong and the sacrifices they made that allow us to walk around acting like a bunch of dumbasses

May i interject here just for a moment. I don’t think your’e racist against your own, which would be the equivalent of hating your own shadow. What i believe you (and I on many instances, let’s be real!) is happening is the total disgust we have with those like us, because of the damage they cause for other decent blacks who are just hardworking and trying to make it. Now the sad thing is that stereotyping is NOT going away and we pray that we are not indirect victims of that when we are looking for a job and a hopeful interview. In fairness however, one should never be lumped into a category because someone like you cannot conform to decent society. But this is an unfortunate part of our society. But in the end, your decency and intelligence will always win out in the end! Pray for them and continue being the example of what a decent human being should be regardless of the outer layer he or she wears!
