Bet You Didn’t Know: Secrets Behind the Making of “Coming to America”

Where did “Zamunda” come from?

If you thought Zamunda was a real country, it’s time you seriously consider investing in a good map. The origins of this fictional African nation are questionable. Some claim comedian Richard Pryor, who Eddie Murphy strongly admired, used the name in his routine when he was talking about a fictional African tribe. Co-writers of the script, Blaustein and Sheffield say it came from writer Bob Zmuda, they just altered the name to make it sound more authentic. It’s a mystery.

I love this movie. Actually, when I was younger I thought I would marry a prince but that is every girl’s fantasy or at least my friends.

“She’s your Queeeeennnnnn toooo beeeeee!” I will watch this again in a heartbeat. One of my favorite lines is when Eddie is in whiteface and asks James Earl Jones’s character about his outfit, “This is beautiful, what is that, velvet?” Cracks me up every time. If they make a remake it should be Eddie going back to Zamunda to lead the kingdom while his wife and children learn to adjust living there. But other than that, no remake, especially with Martin Lawrence

  • Mrsadkiah

Anyone who says the dance is a sped up version of Thriller is going blind…I belive everything Landis said about Eddie and PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE no remake.
