Entrepreneur Spotlight: Meet The Women Behind The Groupon of Black Hair, The Fly Cut

June 21st, 2012 - By Charing Ball

CB: A major component of The Fly Cut is its weekly deals on salon services. However you ladies also plan to offer product reviews, inside information about what our favorite salons are doing as well as beauty tips and information on current hair trends. Why was it important that besides the weekly deals, you offered these other great services?

Eventually, we want The Fly Cut to be a one-stop destination for all thing black hair-related.   Right now, there’s no one website where women can go to learn about fabulous black hair salons in their area, or to get discounts on the hottest black hair and beauty products.  We’d also love for The Fly Cut to host the first ever, super-comprehensive black salon directory, including every major US city.

CB: How many hair salons so far do you have ready to begin offering deals through The Fly Cut and more importantly, how did you go about selecting salons to join as participating vendors?

We vet each salon carefully, making sure they’re up to all The Fly Cut standard.  And most importantly, we focus on recruiting a variety of salons – natural hair, weaves, relaxers – so that everyone can find a salon fit their hair needs.

CB: For your inaugural deals, the Fly Cut will be offering half-off vouchers to Miss Jessie’s Salon new CurlBar in New York City. I imagine that will sell out quickly. What kind of deals can users of the site expect to see in the future? Weaves? Nails? Free color? Come on, the suspense is killing us.

We want to keep the salon names a secret for now, but expect to see deeply discounted appointment with a famous weaveologist, natural hair wash-and-styles for under $40, major discounts on color, and half-off the silkiest blow-out in NYC.

CB: Right now you are launching The Fly Cut in New York City (Harlem, Queens and Brooklyn), any plans of expanding to say, a little fabulous and hair salon-rich city like Philadelphia (no pressure but I’m totally putting pressure on you guys)?

Of course!  We plan on expanding to major cities around the country by the fall.  First DC, then Atlanta, Houston and Los Angeles.  Philly and Chicago next.

CB: Okay, I’m excited, I’m sure our readers are excited, so the million dollar questions are: when does the site officially launch? Is there a cost to join? And how do I go about receiving these daily deals?

The site will launch at the end of June, and there’s absolutely no cost to join.  But it’s a membership-based service, so make sure to sign up at www.theyflycut.com!  We’ll send you email blasts alerting you to our fabulous deals.

This is great! I have a hard time finding good salons here in Tampa. I don’t go much because i have had some bad experiences, but I’m always willing to give a new salon a chance (and only one chance)
