You Could’ve Kept That: 9 Movie Remakes and Sequels That Shouldn’t Have Seen the Light of Day

If you didn’t get the memo already, Hollywood has run out of fresh ideas. When there are no more fresh ideas, you reach back and start trying to redo a good thing. That’s where remakes and the blasted sequel come in to play. In the last year alone we learned that there would be remakes of the movies Sparkle, Annie, A Star is Born, Steel Magnolias and a third sequel to Bad Boys, all with black leads this time around. While some sequels and remakes can actually be better than the originals (The Godfather II, Toy Story III for example), most do a great job of making fans pissed (or worse, making them fall asleep). These were a few that had me ready to start a riot…or something of the sorts…just know I didn’t like these movies at all.

PS, Be prepared to click. I warned you, so hey…

Carmen: A Hip Hopera

Really? This might have been one of the worst movies of all time. OF ALL TIME! *In a Kanye voice* Granted, it was only a TV movie, but Bey, Mos Def, Mekhi Phifer and the rest of them should have known better. A remake of the classic movie Carmen starring Dorothy Dandridge, which also came from a Broadway play and book, Beyoncé plays the lead as an aspiring actress who uses folks to get to the top, including Phifer’s character of Derek. While it was a nice attempt by Robert Townsend, the acting is HORRIBLE, and if you were wondering, not just by Bey Bey. The music bits were a tad bit corny, and the adapted storyline just didn’t work. But I should have known the movie wasn’t going to be all that deep. Anything with Da Brat as the narrator, Wyclef as a tarot card reader, and Bow Wow as a jailbird (even though he was barely out of puberty) just won’t go well…

Does this article say anything fresh? It could be included on a list of Bad-Movie Listicles That Should Never Have Been Written/Published/Posted.

I agree with everything except the Scream movies. Now, I get where you’re coming from about the third one (the whole hollywood, secret brother thing, is a little lame), but that wasn’t the original concept. They had to change it because of columbine or something along those lines. The original concept was going to have Stu in it.

Anyway, the 4th one was a pretty decent return to form. And Sidney is not the sole survivor. Dewey and Gale always live too.

    • JE

The 4th Scream was really good. The 3rd Scream was the only one in the series that was weak.

I am sorry but I love the step up movies I think I was a dancer in my past life

Correct on everything but the most recent 2 Fast & Furious films. Genius? noooooooooo. But fun as hell. Everything else, you’re spot on. There’s probably another 50 remakes and sequels you could easily go after as well

  • Monishang

I have to agree with everything on this list! I would add those Step Up sequels, Love Don’t Cost a Thing remake (Nick Cannon was horrible) and Men in Black. I couldve done without that 2nd one and especially this most recent one they released. And the Big Mama’s House sequel.

  • jackieOsassin

i confess, the only reason i was still on board with all the saw movies is because i only like to see what traps they came up with. at least those always delivered. : )

  • Sinni

Why did I get married 2 was bad. I still get goosebumps (not a good thing) when I think about the Rock popping in on the last scene. SATC 2 was just horrible although funny! Andou forgot all those damn Rocky and Rambo movies. My Dad used to say that only the oriiginal is the best

  • Bajan1

You must be a high to put the Matrix on this list, I know some people have things to say about part 3 (I like em all) but 2 has the most action of all 3 movies

  • FastNFurious4ever!

Fast 5 was actually the best movie in the entire series hands down.Don’t believe me,it had a $83.6 million dollar opening.

    • JE

I agree, Fast 5 was my favorite! A+

  • KD

What about those stupid dance movies! cant stand them!

  • Shelby

Accidentally spelled my name wrong lol .

  • Shelbu

This whole list is BS . This is based off of someone’s opinion , and sorry but you’re opinion sucks . Try again .

    • Triple Ace

I totally agree with Shelbu. I have never seen such a negative, sour apples review in a long time. But then they say that those that can’t do, critique. It is basically your opinion which sucks. And then there is the good ole American way. You are free to watch or don’t watch and you don’t need some moron who probably doesn’t even have a job to bore us with his opinion. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it because sure as hell, someone else will like it. Get a life.

  • Yvette

I love Jada Pinkett-Smith but Woo was horrible. I am also in agreement with most films on this list especially Sex and the City 2, with the exception of Next Friday. Next Friday wasn’t the best but necessary because we met Day Day and Uncle ElRoy. Every Friday the 13th movie except the first one because Jason was introduced at the end, and the second because of his characters’ development; all the other 999,000 was WHACK! I mean how many times is Jason Voorhees going to die and come back? The same with all those darn Freddy Krueger movies…UGH!!

  • lis

Most of the things we love we should really hate i.e reality tv

  • wlknluv

i liked why did i get married 2 but couldn’t stand tasha smith’s character, she was way over the top and i didn’t like how it ended, didn’t like any of the friday sequels, didn’t like sex & city sequel but the version of robert townsend carmen: Hip opera was entertaining. it was a twist on a classic movie.
