You Could’ve Kept That: 9 Movie Remakes and Sequels That Shouldn’t Have Seen the Light of Day

If you didn’t get the memo already, Hollywood has run out of fresh ideas. When there are no more fresh ideas, you reach back and start trying to redo a good thing. That’s where remakes and the blasted sequel come in to play. In the last year alone we learned that there would be remakes of the movies Sparkle, Annie, A Star is Born, Steel Magnolias and a third sequel to Bad Boys, all with black leads this time around. While some sequels and remakes can actually be better than the originals (The Godfather II, Toy Story III for example), most do a great job of making fans pissed (or worse, making them fall asleep). These were a few that had me ready to start a riot…or something of the sorts…just know I didn’t like these movies at all.

PS, Be prepared to click. I warned you, so hey…

Carmen: A Hip Hopera

Really? This might have been one of the worst movies of all time. OF ALL TIME! *In a Kanye voice* Granted, it was only a TV movie, but Bey, Mos Def, Mekhi Phifer and the rest of them should have known better. A remake of the classic movie Carmen starring Dorothy Dandridge, which also came from a Broadway play and book, Beyoncé plays the lead as an aspiring actress who uses folks to get to the top, including Phifer’s character of Derek. While it was a nice attempt by Robert Townsend, the acting is HORRIBLE, and if you were wondering, not just by Bey Bey. The music bits were a tad bit corny, and the adapted storyline just didn’t work. But I should have known the movie wasn’t going to be all that deep. Anything with Da Brat as the narrator, Wyclef as a tarot card reader, and Bow Wow as a jailbird (even though he was barely out of puberty) just won’t go well…

how could you not see the purpose of bamboozled?

      • http://twitter.com/AJ389 AJ389

Its not that I don’t see the purpose of the movie. I know the purpose, I just didn’t care for the way Spike Lee chose to bring it across on film. It didn’t sit well with my personal taste in movies.

      • JE

“Bamboozled” was Excellent. It is my favorite Spike Lee film after “Miracle at St. Anna.”

    • heythere

      Poetic Justice was GREAT

  • thisisme

I would have added others like this upcoming spiderman movie, superman, and hostel that movie and sequels are awful. I here talks about re-making waiting to exhale. PLEASE DON’T!!
I DON’T CARE WHO THEY GET TO PLAY IN THE NEW MOVIE, IT WOULD NEVER BE BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL. This movie also produced one of THE BEST SOUNDTRACKS (BESIDE BOOMERANG). This movie will always be a black woman’s classic.

    • Jess

The upcoming Spiderman movie is not a sequel.

  • thisisme

When a movie is good and leaves you wondering about the characters after it ends should have a sequel to give you those answers and that is just what the 3rd installment of the Matrix did. That was better than the original. I had to watch the 1st movie twice in order to understand the plot.

  • guest

What i find funny is, everyone is complaining about bad sequels when you sit down and watch bbw and love&hiphop back to back….but that’s neither here nor there. On the topic: I love Fast and Furious movies but it’s for the sexay cars(gearhead) and I love all the Friday movies.

  • kiki j

i rarely give sequels a chance bc if the first was good the rest will prolly be wack….so i agree with ur list…but come on why did i get married too!? i loved it!!!! i did think it was a little dramatic to kill off the homie but i liked it better than the first one….but tyler does no wrong for me lol except or colored girls absolutely hated it….but the rest of the list was dead on esp. friday

  • Candacey Doris

I agree with the entire list. But especially Carmen. How Beyonce thought she could top Dorothy Dandridge i don’t know.

  • bailedex

You can’t include Twilight in this because all the movies weren’t good

  • RenJennM

I agree with only some of this list, like Next Friday, Nutty Professor II, and the Scream sequels. Those were booty. And I never liked ANY of the Fast & Furious movies. I adore action flicks, but car-stunt movies just don’t do it for me. (The only car-stunt movies I have ever been impressed by are The Transporter and The Transporter 2 because I know Jason Statham does most of his own stunts [except probably the car stunts]. And plus, they’re awesome!)

But how could you hate The Matrix sequels??? And how could you hate Saw??? Many (not all) of the Saw sequels were probably BETTER than the first one! C’mon son. Those choices just proved to me that you’re not a true action or horror fan.

And I personally loved Carmen: A Hip-Hopera. It was entertaining, and I still remember some of the songs in it. “Oh no no no. I don’t wanna, I don’t wanna, I don’t wanna go!”

I thought this list was going to be based on writing, actor choices, and storylines, but it’s just all opinion-based. *sigh* If anything, X-Men: The Last Stand should be on this list. If you’re a Marvel fan or an X-Men fan, you’ll agree wholeheartedly.

    • GoddessAmongYou

The ONLY reason I like Carmen: A Hip Hopera is because it introduced me to the acting of Mos Def! And for that reason ONLY I’ll say it’s an okay movie. But even as a teenager I knew that Bey wasn’t gonna be all that great as an actress. She’s just not that captivating on the screen. Maybe if she’s not the main character in a movie she’ll do better but she can’t hold her own. I’m just wondering though have you ever seen the original Carmen?

      • RenJennM

Yes, I have. And loved it. Why do you ask?

    • USAFVET

Nutty Professor, 3:10 to Yuma, True Grit, and most of the remakes just don’t do the originals justice. Those are only 3 of the worst remakes of all time. Hollywood hasn’t come up with an original idea in years. What really gets me are these people who think they are commedians, such as Adam Sandler, Steve Martin, Woody Allen to name a few. They try to say that Woody Allen is a genius. He is so deadpan he is boring.

  • Shay

The last Fast and Furious was really good. Much better than 2 – 4.

  • Guest

This writer can shut her dirty little mouth about my Scream, Sex in the City and Matrix movies. lol. Saying the Matrix was “over saturated with fighting”. Uh, DUH, it’s an action film, what do u expect??? To that, I say, your article is over saturated with OPINION, because numbers don’t lie. These movies topped the box office…

    • Candacey Doris

Yes, millions of people saw these movies…and were instantly disappointed.

  • RedButterfly81

What about Honeymooners with Cedric The Entertainer or the comedy movie spoof that end in “Movie”? Those shouldn’t be released to the general public.

  • Activist1

Indigo, you done done it again. Standing ovation for this article. Carmen Hiphopera… It was so bad. Which is why I watched it every time it came on *side eye*

    • cip

      me too!! LOL

  • nisha136988

I guess you have to be a horror fan but I like all the saw movies. Unlike most sequels this one kept the story line going that you wouldn’t really understand without watching all of them. After watching you go ”oh okay” now I see why he did it. I actually wanted to see what the wife was going to do with the package……..

    • KJ23

I definitely agree. When you watch the Saw movies one by one (not counting the first and second ones because those were great by themselves) they can come off kinda sucky, but some friends and I had a movie marathon were we watched each movie back to back, and the story line ended up being pretty good. However, it was a LONG marathon, and we definitely should have been studying instead. Whatever, we all got our degrees!

      Not really… Saw isn’t even a horror series. It’s just gore. I love horror… I hate Saw.

  • guest

You forgot Clash of the Titans in 3D.

    Worst movie ever.

  • olivia

I enjoyed Carmen. It wasn’t going to win any awards but I remember that it was pretty good considering the limited acting experience of most of the cast.

    • Tallchiick

Yay! I’m not the only one lol..I kinda like it too…but I was still in High School back then…but it was cute and had my girl Bey in there looking good!

  • Fashion lover

Sorry but pinky day day and the white guy uncle Elroy and sugar were all hilarious

  • IllyPhilly

*in shades and trench coat* Carmen hip hopera is my guilty pleasure

  • Rayven

    Great list!!
I just said yesterday on here that Chris Tucker was smart for not doing those terrible Friday sequels…pure garbage!

    • UltimateTruebie

But Chris Tucker is doing the latest one called “Last Friday”

      • im.me

Im very excited about this one do you know when its released ?

        • bey bey

          Chris tucker is alive?

    • psylocke_2001

Yet he turned right around and did all those Rush Hour sequels…..mmhhh

      • Rayven

You clearly cant compare those box office hit Rush Hour movies to those low budget, Ghetto, terrible writing and acting Friday sequels pure garbage!

  • angelfaceash1234

I actually like the Friday sequels and I didn’t watch sex in the city 2 all the way and th klumps the 2nd one was ok. but I am SO TIRED of all those stupid step up movies and don’t get me started on twilight…………….

    • sweettea

I loved all 3 Friday movies. Next Friday introduced us to Day-Day how can you not love that?

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Trevor-Gowe/1201180762 Trevor Gowe

Friday was genius… Next Friday was cheese.

    • Mrsadkiah

Well Twilight isn’t simply sequels to one movie. It’s actually a series of books and it’s each book made into a movie. Don’t mean to be nit picky lol! But I agree on everything else.
