Is This What She’s Reduced To? Oprah’s Interviewing The Kardashians for OWN

I really had been sympathetic to Oprah’s plight with OWN, but as usual I was late to the I’m done with her party. When everyone else was calling her a sellout for her “groundbreaking” interviews, I thought she was being a good journalist but after hearing about her Kardashian-Jenner special that’s airing on OWN Sunday, I’m done with her.

It’s not so much that the Kardashians are horrible people, it’s just this is such an obvious last-ditch effort to birng views of any kind to her network, which we all know is struggling, but still, the Kardashians? I’m pretty sure she would have never had them on her talk show which is why I’m annoyed that they’ll be on her “Oprah’s Next Chapter” special Sunday at 8pm.

According to MSN, eight members of the klan will be on-set: Kris and Bruce Jenner, their kids, Khloe, Kim, and Kourtney, of course, and even Lamar Odom and Scott Disick. I imagine Mason will be there too. I’m having a hard time figuring out what next chapter this group will be talking about considering they’ve been doing the same thing for about five years now, just making more money at it, but they apparently managed to come up with 30 minutes of content. After the Kardashian interview, the second part of Oprah’s sit down with 50 Cent will air.

I think Oprah is taking a big gamble with this one though. This family definitely doesn’t appeal to her target demographic and the other shows she has on the network won’t be enough to keep the extra viewers that tune in to watch the Kardashians Sunday night. I understand going all out to save her channel but you still need to think strategically—and smartly.

What do you think about Oprah interviewing the Kardashians?

No I do not see this as scraping the bottom. The Kardashian family has still a large audience otherwise they would have nor been signed for another season and more. Money. I don’t care for them but in her line if business personal feelings must go to the side. Not giving up on Oprah as if yet. She is starting off on her own network, I think she’ll get it together.

Why the negativity, this is only one of many interviews that Oprah has done. We may not like the K family but they are news right now. Deal with it. The level of success that Oprah has achieved is something that most of people can’t and will never reach. She NEVER has to work another day in her life. This is something she is doing out of choice. It’s her network. So what if OWN doesn’t become a huge success according to your standards? What has your big achievement been? How have you contributed to society? Why are you not writing an opinion piece on the other shows that are on OWN network. For instance, Super Soul Sunday is one of the best quality TV show out there. The outrage that the author has is about this interview is laughable. All this negativity and Oprah hating is what is low. Change is never easy and it’s even tougher with people watching, waiting, and expecting you to fail. Thank goodness Oprah is pursuing and living her dream not yours.

The Kardashians, 50 Cents, Neil Patrick Harris (really!!!!), he’s not interesting, the Rosie show. She was on the decline before the “Oprah” show ended with her guests so I’m not surprised she’s really reaching now. I am a huge fan and wish her well, but her choices of late have not been well thought out. Maybe she felt like she could do no wrong. Good Luck Oprah. I hope you figure it out!!!!!

Seriously! Oprah’s desperation is showing big time. I am a big fan of hers. She is an inspiration, but she is losing major points. Sosad to see.She is selling out what she stood for just for ratings. jayz, Bobby kristina interview a week after her mom’s death, 50cent, kardashians. who next? basketball wives? She’s just hoping on their fan bases tuning into her station. Maybe she’s having a mental breakdown. Her show was a hit. She should bring that back on her station.

I rather for Oprah interview a dead corpse of Michael Jackson than the KarTRASHians!

  • Anonns

Unfortunately, that’s the case. On the other hand, it’s TV, you go for what America likes, what people want to see. The kardashians have a strong fanbase, so it will help with ratings.

i just saw the promo for this. i hate every thought of it.

  • gmarie

I mean…they’re an interesting family and people like them. Their ratings prove that that fact isn’t up for debate. She interviews people of interest, much like Barbara Walters and they come from all walks of life. If I had OWN I would watch. No harm No foul.

  • Chanda

Oprah is reaching on that one. Better off interviewing superstars from the 80s and 90s that we haven’t seen in a while. Some old school rappers. Something.

I’ll give it a chance. It really depends on how she interviews them for me. If she really holds no punches with what she asks them, I think it’d be fine. If she totally placates their behavior and how they’ve become “famous” then I definitely agree with this article. However, I can’t blame the woman for picking people who she knows are famous and will draw a big audience. Whether you hate them or love them, the Karadashians bring in MONEY. Focusing on relative unknown’s or people who won’t bring in ratings is counter productive to a channel that is struggling to make it. You can hate it if you want to but this is what people want to see and Oprah would be wise to incorporate that into what her channel is all about.

But they have multiple shows, do interviews every 60 seconds and I feel I know more about them than some actual family members. Not seeing how this could improve ratings…seems to me your creating more dis-interest and possibly turning off the few viewers she does have. Based on the shows I have seen on that network–her audience is not a Kardashian audience. If she wants to cater to masses…there are better ways.

If Oprah wants to get her ratings up again, she needs to stick with what works. America has always loved following her struggle with weight. She needs to do The Biggest Loser, Oprah Edition and watch the ratings soar!

Oprah is really scraping the bottom of the barrel – why not get Jerry Springer to bring his show over to OWN.

  • lorei

Oprah was just beginning to get back on my good side. Everyone has a clean slate with me, but this whole thing with 50 cent, WH, the Kardashians…the same people ( black people/pop culture) who she slandered for years are the same people she’s using to breath life back into her network. Stop being a user Oprah. These are the same people you wouldn’t snarl at. Just like you bad talked Jay-Z left and right for years. Now he’s your buddy buddy…Oprah stop !

    • lorei

Just like most are mentioning she was the one who bullied and bad talked Micheal Jackson for years, but you were the first one to beg to interview his daughter. You want to talk to her about bullying, and MJ….tell her the major role you played in it all !

    • Chanda

She’ll probably have Ice T and Coco on before the summer is over and I know they aren’t her kind of people.

  • Rochelle

The title of this article is the exact thing i texted to my sister. Oprah has to be desperate. I remember her saying she is not into this new culture of celebrating people that do absolutely nothing. Look now….thing is i love Oprah and try to support her network when I can.

  • TRUTH IS

Yup! They all belong to the same cult; that makes them family!!

  • Fashion lover

Well, they are popular…I still can’t find OWN on my tv tho
